Best overall: the July Carry On with CaseSafe combines an ejectable USB-C power bank with a tracker that works with Apple Find My and Google Find Hub. It is the most complete option here for travelers who want built-in features, but a conventional carry-on paired with a removable power bank and a separate tracker can be lighter, easier to maintain, and more flexible.
“Smart luggage” can mean a battery, a tracker, a scale, or simply a pocket for a tracker you supply. Those features are not interchangeable: a USB port may not include a power bank, and a Bluetooth item-finder is not live GPS. Prices below are those displayed in the United States during August 2026 and may change.

The 7 best smart carry-ons
1. July Carry On with CaseSafe: best overall
At $295 on July’s U.S. listing, this is the clearest all-in-one pick. The ejectable battery supplies USB-C charging, while the CaseSafe tracker is integrated into the TSA-lock area and supports both Apple Find My and Google Find Hub. The case also has a polycarbonate shell, compression system, multi-stop handle, and 360-degree wheels. July advertises a lifetime warranty and 100-day returns; consult its terms for coverage and exclusions.

- 【Zipperless Carry on Luggage】 The no zipper design ensures extra security, while the aluminum frame provides added stability. Dual-side pressing prevents accidental openings, extending the lock's lifespan for long-term use.
- 【Premium Durability Hard Shell Suitcase】 Made with 100% PC material and reinforced with an aluminum frame and four corner guards, this suitcase is built to withstand even the toughest travel conditions. Your belongings stay safe and secure no matter where your journey takes you.
- 【TSA-Approved Lock】 The TSA-approved suitcase allows quick, hassle-free access with just one click. Customs clearance is smoother, ensuring your items are safer.
- 【20-Inch Carry-On Size】 Measuring 21.85" x14" x 9" x (including wheels) and weighing 8.59 lbs, this 40L carry-on suitcase is perfect for short trips. It fits in most overhead compartments, so you can skip baggage check and travel light and hassle-free. Carry-on size requirements may vary by airline. Please refer to your airline’s specific guidelines.
- 【Travel Smart with Extra Features】 Packed with practical features, this luggage comes with dual USB charging ports, a cup holder, and both front and side hooks. Perfect for on-the-go convenience, it’s designed to keep your essentials within reach during your travels.
The tracker uses participating-device networks, not cellular GPS, so it does not promise continuous live positioning. Its dual-network compatibility is useful for households that do not all use the same phone platform. The battery’s removability is also practical if a bag must be checked, but it still has to be taken into the cabin in that situation. See July Carry On details and CaseSafe information.
Choose it if: you want integrated charging and tracking without committing to only an Apple-compatible tracker. Skip it if: your priority is the lightest possible case or you do not want to manage an app-connected battery.
2. July Carry On Max Expandable with CaseSafe: best for capacity
July lists this model at $355, with 50 liters of capacity expanding to 62 liters. The package also includes a packable 20-liter tote; July’s claimed combined capacity is up to 82 liters when that tote is used. CaseSafe tracking supports Apple Find My and Google Find Hub, and the case has a polycarbonate shell, TSA lock, compression system, and expansion zip.
Expansion is a trade-off, not a promise of cabin space: check the airline’s exact limits before travel, and do not expand the case unless the resulting dimensions are permitted. The model’s external dimensions and empty weight are not stated in the cited product information, so compare the current listing with your carrier’s limits before buying. See the July Carry On Max listing.
Choose it if: capacity matters more than compactness. Skip it if: you often fly regional aircraft or need a case that stays within stricter carry-on limits even when expanded.

3. Hotel Collection Carry-On: best feature list, with a major weight warning
Hotel Collection lists a portable USB charger, digital scale, Apple-compatible tracker, TSA-approved locks, compression system, polycarbonate construction, protective cover, and spinner wheels. The observed sale price was $185.97, down from a listed $309.95. The scale may help with packing, but it does not replace checking the airline’s own baggage allowance.
The listed empty weight—19 lb 2 oz—is exceptionally heavy for a carry-on, leaving less of a weight allowance for belongings. The listed dimensions, 22.75 × 15.25 × 9.25 inches, may exceed some carriers’ limits. The product page says the charger and tracker ship separately, so confirm what will arrive before purchase. Hotel Collection calls its tracker “GPS,” but Tom’s Guide characterizes it as an Apple Find My-style tracker, not conventional cellular GPS. See Hotel Collection’s product listing.
Choose it if: you specifically want an integrated scale and accept the listed weight. Skip it if: you want a light case or need dimensions that fit a particularly restrictive airline.

4. BÉIS The Small Carry-On Roller: best compact smart-ready case
This polycarbonate roller has a hidden AirTag pocket, TSA locks, Hinomoto 360-degree wheels, and a cushioned trolley handle. Its listed dimensions are 13.5 × 21.5 × 8.07 inches. The pocket gives an Apple tracker a concealed place to sit, but the suitcase itself does not appear to include an AirTag, power bank, USB charging system, or built-in GPS. The product page does not state a price in the cited information.
A hidden pocket is useful only if you supply a compatible tracker. Android users can put a compatible alternative in the pocket, but should confirm its size and network support. See BÉIS product details.

Choose it if: you want a compact case and prefer to replace or upgrade your tracker separately. Skip it if: you expect electronics to be included.
5. Away The Bigger Carry-On: best conventional case for separate accessories
Away lists this case at $295, with 49 liters of capacity, a 7.9-pound weight, and dimensions of 22.7 × 15.4 × 9.6 inches. It has an interior compression system, multiple pockets, and a TSA combination lock. Away says it is designed to fit most major U.S. airline carry-on requirements—not every airline, route, or aircraft.
This is a smart-ready choice, not an integrated smart suitcase: Away says current Classic cases no longer include a battery and the current design does not accommodate adding one. Only cases sold before July 2023 included a battery. Pair the current model with a separate tracker and a removable power bank carried outside the suitcase’s electronics system. See Away’s current Bigger Carry-On listing.
Choose it if: you want a conventional case and prefer replaceable accessories. Skip it if: you require built-in charging or tracking.
6. Monos Hybrid Carry-On: best premium smart-ready shell
Monos lists the Hybrid at $395. Its polycarbonate shell has an aluminum frame, TSA-accepted locks, a compression pad with a zippered pocket, and quiet wheels. Monos advertises a limited lifetime warranty. The cited product page does not identify an integrated battery, charging port, GPS tracker, or built-in AirTag, so treat it as a case for separately supplied accessories. Its empty weight and dimensions are not stated in the cited information; check those figures against your airline before ordering.

- Ride Through Airports at 6.2 MPH – Turn long layovers into a smooth glide with the 200W motor, supporting riders up to 242 lbs. Cruise up to 6.2 miles on a single charge so you arrive at your gate relaxed and on time.
- FAA-Compliant & Overhead Bin Ready – Sized at 22"x14"x9", this hardside carry-on fits most major airline overhead compartments. The battery detaches in seconds to meet aviation safety rules, while TSA-approved locks keep your belongings secure from curb to cabin.
- Stable, Safe, Effortless Movement – Ditch the heavy dragging. Ultra-smooth inline skate wheels and a low-center-of-gravity design prioritize rider stability. The impact-resistant ABS+PC shell absorbs knocks and protects your items trip after trip.
- 31L Storage & On-the-Go Power Hub – Pack smart with a zipperless, top-opening main compartment that streamlines access. The removable battery doubles as a power bank, letting you charge phones and tablets mid-journey—your suitcase and mobile charger in one.
- App-Controlled Smart Luggage – No remote needed. Adjust speed and direction straight from your smartphone for hands-free maneuverability through crowded terminals. Perfect for business travelers rushing between gates or navigating busy concourses.
A modular setup lets you replace a tracker or power bank without replacing the suitcase, but it means more separate items to manage. The premium price and aluminum frame may be poor fits for budget shoppers or anyone focused on minimizing case weight. See Monos Hybrid details.

7. July Carry On Light Expandable: best lightweight-oriented separate setup
July’s U.S. catalog displayed this model at $275. It belongs on a smart-luggage shortlist as a smart-ready alternative: plan on a separate tracker and power bank unless the specific configuration you select says otherwise. The cited catalog information does not establish this model’s exact weight, dimensions, or inclusion of CaseSafe or a battery. July’s product range distinguishes standard models from CaseSafe-equipped options, so verify the precise configuration on the product listing rather than assuming features carry across the range.
Choose it if: minimizing empty-case weight is your priority and you are comfortable assembling a separate setup. Skip it if: you want confirmed integrated tracking and charging without checking configuration details. See July’s U.S. luggage catalog.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “smart” means—and what it does not
Charging: check whether a battery is actually included
A USB port may only provide a connection to a power bank you supply. Some cases include a removable battery; others have a port but no battery, and a battery that cannot be removed can create a serious airline-compliance problem. Confirm the included components and removal method before buying. Travel + Leisure’s overview of smart luggage with removable batteries also distinguishes port-equipped luggage from cases supplied with a power bank.
Tracking: item-finder networks are not live GPS
Apple Find My and Google Find Hub can help locate a compatible tracker through participating nearby devices. That is different from a suitcase with cellular GPS hardware, which uses a different connectivity model and may require a subscription. Network-based location can be less useful where few participating devices are nearby, and a tracker may not update while surrounded by luggage or inside an aircraft hold. If your household uses Android, an Apple-only tracker may be a poor fit; July’s stated compatibility with both networks is a useful distinction.

- Airline-Approved Boarding Size: 20 inch carry on luggage meets most airline requirements for overhead compartments. Suitcases with wheels are suitable for 3-5 day trips, air, train and bus travel. Travel luggage is upgraded with double-ended zippers and side-mounted TSA-approved locks to ensure smooth and hassle-free airline baggage screening for carry on suitcase measuring 22x14x9 inches with spinner wheels and handle. It has a volume of 35 liters and weighs only 6.83 lbs.
A tracker pocket means the case is ready for an accessory, not trackable on its own. A tracker can help locate a bag but does not physically secure it; a TSA-approved lock is a separate feature, not theft prevention.
Scales: convenience does not guarantee a useful reading
An integrated scale is worthwhile only if you can weigh the bag before check-in and compare the result with your airline’s actual limit. Do not assume a product-page scale reading is exact enough to avoid an excess-baggage charge. A heavy case can undermine the benefit by consuming more of the allowance before it is packed.
Airline rules: batteries, gate checks, and size
The FAA says smart bags with lithium batteries generally must travel in the cabin unless the battery is removed. If a bag is checked, the removable battery must be taken out and carried in the cabin under spare-battery rules. The FAA also permits certain baggage-location trackers in checked bags subject to battery and size limits, and advises passengers to check with their airline. International rules and carrier policies can add restrictions. Read the FAA guidance on baggage with lithium batteries and the IATA smart-baggage guidance before travel.
If your bag is gate-checked
- Before boarding, confirm that the power bank is accessible and removable without tools.
- Remove it before handing the suitcase to the gate agent.
- Carry the removed battery in the cabin and follow the airline’s spare-battery instructions.
- Protect exposed terminals and prevent accidental activation.
- Leave the tracker in the bag unless the airline instructs otherwise, and check the carrier’s smart-bag policy—especially on international flights.
Check the full external dimensions
Use the case’s external measurements, including wheels and handles, and compare them with the carrier operating your flight. The July Max’s expansion can take it beyond an airline’s permitted size; Away’s “most major U.S. airlines” wording is not a guarantee for every carrier. Regional aircraft and international airlines may have different limits. When a listing does not state dimensions or weight, confirm them with the manufacturer rather than relying on the product name.

- Start with airline fit. Check external dimensions, empty weight, and your usual carriers’ size and weight limits before comparing electronics.
- Decide how you want to track. Choose a network that matches your phone, or a tracker pocket that lets you select your own device. Do not pay extra for a “GPS” label unless the product’s actual connectivity is clear.
- Check battery removability and inclusion. Look for a removable power bank, not just a USB port, and consider how quickly you could remove it at a gate.
- Compare serviceability. Separate trackers and power banks are easier to replace independently; integrated components can be more convenient but may be harder to service.
- Judge the suitcase first. Wheels, handles, organization, weight, and warranty matter on every trip; a scale or tracker cannot compensate for an awkward or oversized case.
- Compare recurring costs and terms. Check whether a tracker requires a subscription and what the warranty covers, including electronics.
For most travelers, July’s CaseSafe Carry On offers the most complete integrated package. If you would rather avoid proprietary electronics or want more choice over replacements, a conventional case with a separate tracker and removable power bank is a sensible alternative. The best value depends on whether you will actually use the built-in features—and whether the case fits your airline.
