1. Barilla Gluten Free Penne or Spaghetti: a familiar everyday choice
Barilla’s US product pages describe its gluten-free penne and spaghetti as rice-and-corn products, certified gluten-free and made on a dedicated gluten-free line. Choose spaghetti for long-noodle dishes and penne for substantial sauces or baked pasta. Barilla positions its ridged penne for meat, vegetable, cheese, oil and butter sauces, as well as baking. The company advises salting the cooking water and avoiding oil, which it says can interfere with sauce clinging.
2. Jovial 100% Organic Brown Rice Fusilli: a brown-rice pick
In a tasting published September 22, 2021, Aliza Gans of The Kitchn selected Jovial’s fusilli as the best brown-rice pasta in her test, describing a subtly nutty flavor and a pleasing al dente bite. 3. Tinkyada rice pasta: options across shapes
Tinkyada’s manufacturer catalog lists organic brown-rice elbows, penne, spirals, spaghetti and lasagne, with suggested uses that include pasta salads, sauces and baking. In The Kitchn’s 2021 tasting, Tinkyada’s brown-rice pasta was described as springier than Jovial’s. 4. Banza chickpea pasta: a legume-based alternative
Banza is a chickpea-based option for shoppers who want a legume pasta rather than a grain-based one. A 2026 comparison characterizes legume pastas as firmer, denser and nuttier than grain-based pasta. Treat that as a broad category description, not an independently verified result for every Banza shape or recipe. 5. Tolerant lentil pasta: another legume option
Tolerant lentil pasta appears as a candidate in the same 2026 comparison. Lentil pasta is worth considering if you want a legume base, but the available evidence does not establish a particular Tolerant product’s current ingredients, shape range, taste-test performance or local availability. Confirm the exact package before buying.

The strongest explicit comparative tasting cited here is The Kitchn’s September 2021 report. Its favorable notes on Jovial and Tinkyada are useful context, but they are not a current seven-product test. Barilla and Tinkyada provide manufacturer information about their own products and catalogues, not independent evidence that one brand is superior.

- Start with the package. Use the current directions on the exact product; cook times vary by base, shape and formulation.
- Check doneness early. A 2026 comparison advises checking before the listed time is up because some gluten-free pasta can move quickly from firm to soft. Taste near the lower end of the package’s range and continue cooking only as needed.
- Match the shape to the meal. Use the package’s shape and cooking guidance; penne is positioned by Barilla for substantial sauces and baked dishes, while Tinkyada lists multiple shapes, including lasagne and elbows.
- Follow product-specific finishing advice. Barilla advises salting the water and not adding oil so sauce can cling. Rinsing is not a universal rule: whether it helps depends on the product and recipe.
What to check if you have celiac disease
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says the “gluten-free” label claim is voluntary and may be used when a food meets the agency’s regulatory requirements. The FDA says it issued the final rule defining the term on August 2, 2013. Its current page estimates that 3 million people in the United States have celiac disease; the page does not state a year for that estimate. For celiac disease, check the gluten-free claim and allergen or advisory statements on the exact package rather than relying only on the ingredient base.
