Shape’s current guide names the Nike Alphafly 3 its best overall shoe and the New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite v4 its marathon pick. For a useful seven-shoe shortlist, the picks below prioritize distinct needs, from racing and marathon comfort to training and wider feet. Recommendations and fit impressions are attributed to Shape; they are not a guarantee that a shoe will suit every runner.
How these seven picks are selected
Shape’s current guide has a different headline and lists ten categories, rather than seven. This shortlist keeps the requested seven by focusing on road racing, marathon use, entry-level guidance, different ride preferences, training and wider-foot fit. The categories are Shape’s editorial recommendations, not clinical assessments. Shape says its team includes marathon runners and that it tested shoes; the experiences and judgments below belong to that publication.
Specifications and stock can change with model generations and retailer listings. Check the current version, size and availability before buying. Stack height and drop are the figures Shape reports, not a substitute for trying the shoe on.
The 7 best carbon-plated running shoes
1. Nike Alphafly 3 — best overall
Shape’s overall pick combines ZoomX foam with a full-length plate. Shape lists a 40 mm stack and 8 mm drop. Its guide cautions that the convex heel can feel unstable, especially for heel strikers; it also reports that fit may run small and that small rocks can catch in outsole crevices. Consider it if you want Shape’s top overall recommendation, but pay particular attention to heel feel and fit.

#1 Best Overall
- FuelCell midsole foam with approximately 3% bio-based content delivers a propulsive feel to help drive you forward. Bio-based content is made from renewable resources to help reduce our carbon footprint.
- Energy Arc pairs sport-specific carbon fiber plate geometry with strategic midsole voids, designed to increase stored energy to deliver a higher amount of total energy returned
- Angular midsole design reduces weight
- Outsole designed for superior traction
- 4 mm drop; due to variances created during the development and manufacturing processes, all references to 4 mm drop are approximate
2. New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite v4 — best for the marathon
Shape’s marathon pick has a listed 40 mm stack and 4 mm drop, and is offered in standard and wide widths according to the guide. Shape highlights its lower drop and perceived stability; one reviewer reported no break-in time, while another noted that the wider sole could feel clunky to some first-time users. Those are individual impressions, not a promise of immediate comfort. Try it on and assess the ride in training before race day.
3. Brooks Hyperion Elite 4 — best for beginners
Shape labels this its beginner pick and notes an 8 mm toe drop. The guide says that drop requires ankle stability, so its category label should not be read as a universal prescription for new runners. If you are new to plated shoes, focus on whether the shoe feels controlled and comfortable at your own pace rather than assuming a beginner label guarantees an easy transition.
Rank #2
- IncrediRUN foam: Next-generation superfoam cushioning with unheard of levels of energy return.
- Full-length slotted carbon fiber plate: Delivers smooth transitions and explosive propulsion with each stride.
- Featherweight knit and mesh upper: Ultra-breathable and designed for connected performance.
- 4/5 level of cushioning
- 8mm offset / 7oz weight
4. On Cloudboom Echo 3 — best for a firmer, flatter ride
Shape presents the Cloudboom Echo 3 as its balance pick. The guide lists a 37 mm stack and 9.5 mm drop, and describes a firmer, flatter feel. Those ride qualities may be useful to compare if you prefer a less pronounced sensation underfoot than some other racing shoes.
5. Saucony Endorphin Elite — best for runners seeking a slotted-plate design
Shape recommends this model for flat feet and reports a slotted plate, 39.5 mm stack and 8 mm drop. That editorial category is not a clinical judgment or assurance that the shoe will suit every flat-footed runner. Fit and comfort remain individual.
Rank #3
- Featuring SpeedRoll Technology powered by our all-new incrediRUN foam. Unlike any foam that’s come before it, with unseen levels of energy return and cushioning, incrediRUN provides a level performance that has to be felt to be believed.
- Full length Carbon Fiber Plate slotted for better midfoot flexibility with our forwardmost tread point making it our most aggressive race day offering.
- Thin and grippy PWRTRAC Rubber outsole for confidence on any surface.
- Lightweight, streamlined upper design for enhanced breathability over long distances and with a seamless molded heel for a secure and comfortable race-day fit.
- 8mm Offset
6. Puma FAST-R NITRO Elite 2 — best for plated training
Shape recommends the FAST-R NITRO Elite 2 for training and lists a 40 mm stack and 8 mm drop. A training category alone does not establish how durable or comfortable it will be for your mileage; consider your own fit and intended use alongside the shoe’s race-oriented design.
7. Hoka Cielo X1 — best for wider feet
Shape recommends the Cielo X1 for wide feet and describes its fit as roomier. A roomier fit can be a useful starting point, but it does not confirm that a particular width or size is currently in stock or will fit your foot. Check the seller’s current sizing and return policy.
Rank #4
- IncrediRUN foam: Next-generation superfoam cushioning with unheard of levels of energy return.
- Full-length slotted carbon fiber plate: Delivers smooth transitions and explosive propulsion with each stride.
- Featherweight knit and mesh upper: Ultra-breathable and designed for connected performance.
- 4/5 level of cushioning
- 8mm offset / 7oz weight
How to choose between them
- Start with fit: Check length, width, heel hold and whether your foot feels secure through a turn. A shoe’s category or geometry does not determine personal fit.
- Match the ride to your preference: Shape describes the On as firmer and flatter, while its Alphafly 3 notes flag a potentially wobbly heel for some runners. Treat these as reported impressions to test, not universal outcomes.
- Compare drop and stack in context: The listed measurements distinguish the models, but they do not by themselves show which shoe will feel stable or comfortable for you.
- Rehearse before racing: Assess comfort and handling during training. Shape reports one reviewer’s successful 12-mile first outing in the New Balance, but one person’s experience is not a reason to race in a new pair without testing your own.
Do carbon-plated shoes make you faster?
They are designed and marketed for performance, but the cited sources do not establish a fixed race-time improvement for every runner. Runner’s World recalls that Nike’s 2017 Vaporfly 4% promised a 4 percent improvement in running economy; that was a historical product claim, not a universal result for today’s shoes. Choose based on fit and race needs rather than expecting a specific time gain.

What about Nike Apex?
Nike announced Apex on September 30, 2026, and says it is planned for January 2027 at Nike.com and select retailers. Nike describes two double-stacked Air Zoom units, ZoomX LT foam, a redesigned carbon-fibre Flyplate and Flyknit X upper. Its claims of up to 40% more energy return than Alphafly 3 in a men’s size 9 and more than 10% lower weight are manufacturer comparisons, not independent test results or promised race-time gains. The announcement is not confirmation that Apex is available now. Read Nike’s announcement.
