Craigslist is still useful for local deals, but it is no longer the only place to find secondhand furniture, electronics, tools, clothing, collectibles, and household goods. The right alternative depends on how you plan to buy: local pickup usually saves shipping but requires more safety and payment planning, while nationwide marketplaces offer more choice but add fees, shipping costs, and buyer-protection rules.
These six sites are the strongest U.S. Craigslist alternatives, each with a different cost and reach profile. The comparison below was checked on August 9, 2026.
Quick comparison
| Site | Best for | Local pickup | Shipping | Main cost or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook Marketplace | Broad local reach | Yes | Yes, where available | Listings must follow Meta’s Commerce Policies |
| OfferUp | Mobile-first local sales | Yes | Some listings | Normal listings cannot be created from the website |
| eBay | Nationwide sales and niche items | Optional | Yes | Listing and final-value fees can reduce profit |
| Mercari | Simple shipped sales | Limited or eligible areas | Yes | Current listings generally have seller and buyer fees |
| VarageSale | Moderated neighborhood transactions | Yes | No general nationwide marketplace | You must join an approved local community |
| Nextdoor For Sale & Free | Hyperlocal neighborhood sales | Yes | Not its primary model | Results depend heavily on neighborhood activity |
1. Facebook Marketplace: best overall Craigslist alternative
Facebook Marketplace is the closest broad replacement for Craigslist. It works particularly well for furniture, appliances, tools, electronics, vehicles, collectibles, and other items that are expensive or inconvenient to ship. Facebook describes Marketplace as a way to buy and sell with people in your community, although eligible listings can also offer shipping.
For sellers, the current desktop listing path is:
- Open your Facebook Feed and choose Marketplace from the left menu.
- Select Create new listing, then Item for sale.
- Choose Add photos and enter the item details and price.
- Select Next, then Publish.
Facebook’s listing instructions say to enter 0 as the price to list an item for free. If the Next button is disabled, Facebook says a required field is incomplete.
#1 Best Overall
- DESIGN: Features a bold 'Ethics Enforcer with Clipboard' phrase alongside clipboard and document icons for a professional, modern aesthetic.
- PRINT QUALITY: Printed on glossy photo paper with vibrant, fade-resistant colors that maintain their brilliance over time.
- SIZE: Measures 13x19 inches, making it a large, eye-catching statement piece for any wall space.
- VERSATILE DECOR: Suits a variety of rooms including home offices, bedrooms, kitchens, and family rooms with its clean, modern style.
- IDEAL GIFT: Perfect for Compliance Officers, students, or anyone who values organization, ethics, and professionalism in their daily life.
Facebook offers Available, Pending, Sold, and Shipped status labels. Use Pending when you have agreed to a sale but have not completed payment and pickup. Use Sold only after the transaction is finished. Facebook’s listing-status instructions say a sold listing is removed from Marketplace visibility, and people who previously messaged you receive a sold notification.
Best financial use
Use Facebook Marketplace when shipping would consume too much of the item’s value. A $150 dresser, for example, may be a better local sale than an online shipment once packing materials, freight, and damage risk are included.
Watch-outs
- “Is this available?” is an inquiry, not a commitment.
- Shipping and checkout are not available on every listing.
- Local demand can differ significantly between neighborhoods.
- Follow Meta’s Commerce Policies before listing restricted goods.
2. OfferUp: best for mobile-first local selling
OfferUp focuses on local transactions through its mobile app. It includes in-app messaging, reputation information, suggested meeting locations, and local listings across many ordinary product categories. OfferUp says in-person transactions do not incur a commission or transaction fee. Promotions, extra listings after the free allotment, and OfferUp Premium can cost extra.
The most important practical limitation is that you cannot create a normal OfferUp listing from OfferUp.com or a regular desktop browser. Posting requires the dedicated mobile app, according to OfferUp’s posting instructions.
In the app, use this path:
- Open OfferUp and sign in.
- From Home, tap Post.
- On Post an Item, take or select photos.
- Enter a title and description, then tap Next.
- Choose the category, optional subcategory, and condition.
- Enter the price and optionally enable Firm on Price.
- Use Get My Location or enter a ZIP code.
- Tap Post.
OfferUp allows up to 12 listing photos and displays an approximate location rather than your exact address.
Payment and safety
OfferUp does not process payments through the app for in-person transactions. Its buying guidance advises buyers not to send money before meeting the seller. Agree on the payment method in advance, inspect the item, and complete payment at the meetup. A public location, police-station exchange area, or other well-lit place is preferable to a private residence.
To remove a completed listing, go to Home → My Listings → select the item → Mark Sold → Mark Sold. OfferUp says this action cannot be reversed, so wait until the transaction is complete.
Letgo should not be treated as a separate major U.S. alternative. OfferUp and Letgo combined their U.S. marketplaces, so current U.S. users should generally use OfferUp instead.

3. eBay: best for nationwide reach, collectibles, and niche items
eBay makes more sense than a local classified site when the item has a specialized buyer somewhere else in the country. It is particularly useful for collectibles, vintage products, replacement parts, branded clothing, books, electronics, and items whose value is difficult to estimate from local listings.
Before setting a price, check actual sales rather than current asking prices. On eBay, go to:
Advanced Search → enter keywords → Completed listings → Search
eBay’s pricing guidance explains that completed listings show what comparable products sold for. That is more useful for budgeting than looking at unsold listings priced optimistically by other sellers.

eBay fees
For most categories, non-Store sellers currently receive up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings per month. After that allowance, the insertion fee for most categories is $0.35 per listing, according to eBay’s selling-fee schedule.
Most categories currently have a 13.6% final-value fee on the total sale amount up to $7,500, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 for orders of $10 or less or $0.40 for orders over $10. Category exceptions apply. The amount used to calculate the final-value fee can include the item price, buyer-paid shipping, sales tax, and other applicable charges, as described in eBay’s fee information.
For example, a seller should not assume that a $100 sale produces $100 before shipping. The final account balance can be reduced by the final-value fee, per-order fee, shipping supplies, postage, and any optional listing services.
Buyer protection and returns
Most eBay transactions are covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee when an item does not arrive or materially differs from its listing, subject to eligibility requirements. eBay’s policy generally requires the buyer to complete and pay for the transaction through eBay using an eligible payment method. A “no returns” setting does not eliminate claims involving a damaged, faulty, missing, or substantially misrepresented item.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

eBay is usually a poor financial choice for bulky, low-value items unless the buyer can arrange local pickup. It is a much better fit for a small item with national demand.
4. Mercari: best for ordinary items that can be shipped
Mercari is designed primarily around shipping items to buyers. It works well for clothing, kitchenware, toys, small electronics, household goods, and other products that can be packed without excessive cost or damage risk.

Current Mercari fees
For listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025, Mercari’s fee policy states:
- The seller pays a 10% selling fee on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping.
- The buyer pays a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping.
- There is no separate payment-processing fee for those listings.
Older listings may have different fee treatment until they are updated. Buyers should also remember that the displayed checkout total can exceed the seller’s asking price because of shipping, sales tax, and the Buyer Protection fee.
Buyer-protection deadline
After confirmed delivery, the buyer has 72 hours to report that the item is not as described through Mercari’s Help Center. If the buyer does not rate the order during that period, the transaction completes automatically and the seller’s funds are released, according to Mercari’s Buyer Protection policy.
Do not move negotiations or payment outside Mercari. Mercari’s marketplace guidelines prohibit taking a transaction off-platform except where its eligible Meetup feature applies.
Mercari is generally a poor choice for heavy furniture, large appliances, and low-priced items whose postage is close to their selling price. Before listing, estimate net proceeds as:
Sale price − seller fee − shipping or packing costs − cost of goods = estimated profit

VarageSale organizes local buying and selling through individual communities rather than one nationwide classified feed. Community administrators help monitor membership and prohibited items, which can make the experience more structured than an open anonymous listing site.
The selling process is:
- Post the item in an available local community.
- Respond to buyers through Message Seller, comments, or private messages.
- Select Reserve when you have chosen a buyer.
- Assign the buyer and agreed price.
- Schedule a meetup.
- Let the buyer inspect the item and complete payment.
- Mark the transaction sold.
On the desktop site, transactions are managed through My Transactions. VarageSale says items marked sold are automatically removed from the system after seven days.

6. Nextdoor For Sale & Free: best for hyperlocal neighborhood sales
Nextdoor’s For Sale & Free section is useful when the likely buyer lives nearby. It is a practical option for furniture, children’s items, free goods, household supplies, and leftovers from a move or decluttering project.
Nextdoor announced that its U.S. For Sale & Free flow supports up to 10 photos. Its generative assistant may suggest a category, title, price, and description, but the seller can edit those suggestions before publishing.
Best financial use
Nextdoor can reduce the time and cost involved in selling bulky goods. A nearby buyer may be willing to collect a used desk or bed frame, eliminating packing and shipping expenses. It can also be effective for items that are worth little money but useful to someone close by.
Limitations
- Results depend on the size and activity of your neighborhood network.
- Nextdoor is not primarily a nationwide shipping marketplace.
- Website and app controls may differ, so look for the For Sale & Free section rather than relying on an old button path.
Which Craigslist alternative should you use?
| If you are selling or buying… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture, appliances, or other bulky goods | Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, or Nextdoor | Local pickup avoids disproportionate shipping costs |
| A collectible, rare part, or niche product | eBay | National reach and completed-sale data can improve pricing |
| Clothing, kitchenware, or another packable item | Mercari | Shipping is central to the transaction |
| A neighborhood garage-sale transaction | VarageSale | Local communities and moderation add structure |
| A cash or in-person sale | OfferUp or Facebook Marketplace | Both are built around local conversations and meetups |
| The broadest possible buyer pool | eBay | It reaches buyers beyond your local area |
Common claims that are outdated
- “Letgo is a separate major U.S. Craigslist alternative.” The U.S. Letgo and OfferUp marketplaces were combined.
- “Mercari has no seller fee.” Current or updated listings use a 10% seller fee under Mercari’s current fee structure.
- “You can list on OfferUp from a desktop browser.” Ordinary OfferUp listings require the mobile app.
- “eBay charges only a percentage after a sale.” Insertion fees, final-value fees, per-order fees, optional services, and other costs may apply.
- “An offer or ‘Is this available?’ message means the item is sold.” Keep the listing active until payment and handoff are complete. Then use the platform’s Pending or Sold status.
How to protect your budget when buying used items
- Calculate the all-in price. Include shipping, taxes, platform fees, fuel for pickup, replacement parts, and cleaning supplies.
- Compare completed sales. On eBay, use completed listings. On local platforms, compare several similar active listings and adjust for condition.
- Inspect before paying locally. Test electronics, check for damage, confirm dimensions, and verify that included accessories are actually present.
- Keep platform payments on-platform when required. Buyer protection can disappear when you pay through an unrelated method or move the transaction outside the marketplace.
- Use a public meetup. Do not disclose your home address unnecessarily, and avoid sending advance payment to an unverified local seller.
- Document condition. Buyers and sellers should save photographs, descriptions, serial numbers where appropriate, and shipping records.
FAQ
What is the closest alternative to Craigslist?
Facebook Marketplace is generally the closest broad replacement because it supports a large local audience, local pickup, and shipping on eligible listings. OfferUp is another strong option when you prefer a mobile-first local marketplace.
Which Craigslist alternative has the lowest selling fees?
Local in-person sales on OfferUp generally do not incur a commission or transaction fee, although paid promotions and other optional services may cost money. Facebook Marketplace and neighborhood platforms may also be economical for local transactions. eBay and Mercari have more clearly defined selling fees.
Is eBay or Mercari better for selling used items?
Use eBay for collectibles, niche products, replacement parts, and items with national demand. Use Mercari for ordinary items that are easy to pack and ship. Compare the expected sale price with fees, postage, packaging, and the time required.
What is the safest way to buy from a local marketplace?
Meet in a public, well-lit location, inspect the item before paying, avoid advance payment to an unknown seller, keep relevant messages on the platform, and use a payment method appropriate to the marketplace’s rules. For shipped purchases, keep payment and communication on-platform so applicable buyer protection remains available.

For most local used-item purchases, start with Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp. Choose eBay when national reach or specialized demand matters, and Mercari when the item is easy to ship. VarageSale and Nextdoor For Sale & Free are worth checking for neighborhood transactions, particularly when pickup is more economical than shipping.
The cheapest listing price is not always the cheapest purchase: compare the complete cost, including fees, postage, fuel, repairs, and the risk of receiving an item that does not match its description.
