The 6 Best Protein Powders and Shakes for Kids? What Parents Should Know

Most kids do not need protein powder or shakes. Here is when food is enough, when a pediatric oral nutrition supplement may help, and how families should assess safety and cost with a clinician.

There is no evidence-based list of six “best” protein powders or shakes for children. For most healthy kids—including young athletes—a balanced diet supplies enough protein, and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says protein supplements generally do not improve younger athletes’ sports performance. Protein powders are not a routine requirement or a shortcut to athletic gains. A narrower exception is a clinician-directed oral nutrition supplement for a child with faltering weight or a documented nutrition need.

This U.S.-focused guide explains when food is the right answer, when a medical supplement may be appropriate, and what safety and cost questions to ask before buying anything.

Do kids need protein shakes?

Usually, no. The AAP says: “Most young athletes who eat a healthy, well-balanced diet do not need and would not benefit from protein supplements.” (AAP parent guidance, updated July 29, 2024.) Studies have not shown protein supplements improve sports performance in younger athletes.

A child who is growing normally and eating a reasonably varied diet should get protein from meals and snacks. A vegetarian child may need thoughtful meal planning, ideally with help from a registered dietitian, rather than an automatically chosen powder.

What to give a picky eater instead

Protein does not have to come from meat or a tub labeled “protein.” The AAP lists foods such as:

  • Milk, yogurt, mozzarella and other dairy foods
  • Eggs, salmon, fish sticks and turkey
  • Tofu, soy milk, beans and lentils
  • Nut butter and hummus
  • Oatmeal and whole-wheat pasta
  • Peas, broccoli and potatoes

Offer familiar foods alongside a new one, and use calorie- and protein-containing ingredients the child already accepts. Families worried about a child’s diet should contact the child’s doctor. How much protein food is listed in AAP guidance?

An AAP food-equivalent table lists these daily amounts for people doing less than 30 minutes of moderate activity beyond normal daily activity:

Age or group Protein-food ounce-equivalents per day
Ages 2–3 2
Ages 4–8 4
Girls ages 9–18 5
Boys ages 9–13 5
Boys ages 14–18 6½

These are food-group ounce-equivalents from ChooseMyPlate—not grams of protein and not a supplement dose. A child’s actual needs vary with age, body size, growth, health and activity.

When a pediatric shake can be medically appropriate

Children with faltering weight or an identified nutrition problem are a different category from healthy children seeking a sports boost. The AAP’s 2026 faltering-weight guideline conditionally suggests oral nutritional supplementation over no supplementation for children with faltering weight. It describes higher-calorie infant formulas or oral supplements for children older than 12 months as possible tools to support weight gain, but rates the certainty of evidence as very low. The guideline’s review included 10 randomized controlled trials and found improved weight and height gain, likely because supplementation increased total nutrition intake; it does not show that every product works equally.

AAP dietary guidance says clinicians may use an oral nutritional supplement providing roughly 25–50% of measured or estimated energy and protein needs as part of an assessment, food strategy and follow-up plan. That range is a care-planning statement, not a serving instruction for parents. Read the full guidance at AAP Dietary Guidance.

What supervision involves

  • Assessing growth, medical history, eating pattern and calorie intake
  • Trying food-based energy strategies where appropriate
  • Selecting a formulation and amount for the child’s specific need
  • Monitoring growth, meals, tolerance and changing nutritional needs
  • Involving a pediatric registered dietitian for high-energy, high-protein therapy when indicated

Do not continue a supplement indefinitely without reassessment. Possible downsides identified by the AAP include cost or access barriers, excessive weight gain, reduced appetite at meals, product burnout, ingredient allergies, dental caries and stress around feeding. Protein powder safety: what parents need to know

In the United States, dietary supplements are not FDA-approved for safety or effectiveness before sale. The AAP warns about contamination, adulteration and labels that do not accurately describe contents. That is a statement about the regulatory framework—not proof that every shake is contaminated, and not every ready-to-drink pediatric nutrition product is legally classified the same way.

Which option fits which situation?

Situation Most appropriate starting point Who should decide? What the evidence supports
Healthy child eating a varied diet Ordinary meals and snacks Parent, with routine pediatric care No established benefit from routine protein supplements
Young athlete seeking performance gains Balanced meals, hydration and sleep Parent and clinician/coach as needed AAP says most do not need or benefit from protein supplements
Picky eater without documented growth concern Accepted protein foods plus gradual variety Parent; ask the pediatrician if worried Food-based strategies and dietary assessment
Faltering weight or identified nutrition need Clinician-directed oral nutritional supplement when indicated Pediatric clinician and, often, registered dietitian Conditional AAP recommendation; evidence certainty very low

Why this article does not name six winners

The available AAP guidance supports a category—pediatric oral nutrition supplements used in clinical care—not a ranking of six consumer powders. Current age ranges, complete labels, comparable formulations and independent contaminant testing were not established for six products. Taste and convenience also cannot determine whether a product is clinically suitable.

If a clinician recommends supplementation, ask for the exact product type and amount, then verify the current package label and availability. A shopping search such as “pediatric oral nutrition supplement shake” is only a category query, not a recommendation.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Identify the concern. Is the goal ordinary nutrition, sports performance, picky eating, weight gain or treatment of a diagnosed condition?
  2. Review growth first. Ask the child’s pediatrician to interpret growth trends rather than judging need from appetite or athletic activity alone.
  3. Build food options. Use dairy, eggs, fish, soy, beans, lentils, nut butter, hummus, grains and vegetables the child can tolerate.
  4. Use a supplement only for a defined reason. Follow the clinician’s product, dose, timing and review plan.
  5. Track effects. Report reduced meal intake, excessive gain, allergy symptoms, dental problems or feeding stress.
