How to choose among topical repellents
Start with EPA registration
CDC and EPA recommend EPA-registered repellents to reduce bites that can spread germs. Registration means the specific product has a label covering its ingredients, uses and directions; naming an ingredient alone is not a product guarantee. The EPA’s ingredient page, last updated January 23, 2026, listed more than 500 DEET products, about 40 picaridin products, about 45 IR3535 products, six PMD products and six OLE products. Those counts can change.
Compare concentration and labeled duration
Higher concentrations generally last longer, but concentration is not a promise of identical protection in every setting. CDC notes that products below 10% active ingredient may provide limited protection, often about one to two hours. Duration also changes with mosquito species, temperature, sweat, swimming, activity and rubbing. Reapply only at the interval and maximum frequency on the label.

Match the product to the insects
Read the “uses” section for mosquitoes, ticks and any other insects you need to repel. A result from a tick test does not automatically establish a product’s rank for mosquitoes, and no single formulation performs identically against all of the more than 3,700 mosquito species worldwide.
Choose a workable format
- Pump spray: makes it easier to control where the product goes and is the format used for the Repel and Sawyer examples above.
- Aerosol: can cover exposed skin quickly, but spray it outdoors and away from your face.
- Lotion or wipe: useful when you want less airborne spray or more controlled application.
OLE, PMD and “natural” labels
Formulated OLE and PMD repellents are not the same as pure lemon eucalyptus essential oil. CDC does not recommend unformulated oil because it lacks the validated safety and efficacy testing and EPA registration required for a registered repellent. CDC also says not to use OLE or PMD products on children under 3.

- Read the complete product label, including the insects covered, protection time, age limits and reapplication instructions.
- Apply sunscreen first and repellent second.
- Apply only to exposed skin or clothing—not skin covered by clothing.
- Keep repellent away from eyes, mouth, hands, cuts and irritated skin. For the face, put the product on your hands first, then apply carefully.
- Have an adult apply repellent to a child. Dress children in covering clothing and keep repellent off their hands; stroller or carrier netting can add protection.
- Wash treated skin after coming indoors and wash clothing before wearing it again, following the label.

Permethrin-treated clothing
CDC’s Yellow Book says EPA-registered 0.5% permethrin-treated clothing and gear repel and kill mosquitoes and other biting arthropods. Products such as Sawyer, Repel and Ultrathon are marketed for clothing treatment; Insect Shield, BugsAway and Insect Blocker sell pretreated clothing. Follow each label, allow treated items to dry for 24–48 hours before packing, and never apply permethrin to skin.

Physical barriers and mosquito control
- Wear long sleeves, long pants and socks when practical.
- Use window screens, bed nets and stroller or carrier netting.
- Empty or cover containers that hold standing water around your home.
These measures reduce exposure but do not replace an appropriate topical repellent when you need exposed-skin protection.

CDC identifies sound-emitting devices and repellent-impregnated wristbands as ineffective. Candles, essential-oil mixtures and other unregistered products should not be treated as equivalent to an EPA-registered repellent. If a product has no EPA registration and no clear label for mosquitoes, its protection is not established.

- Everyday backyard use: choose a registered picaridin, DEET, IR3535 or formulated OLE/PMD product with a duration that covers your time outside.
- Long hikes or camping: consider a labeled DEET or picaridin product plus permethrin-treated clothing or gear.
