Nubuck and suede

Rubber, neoprene, and other alternatives

How to apply waterproofing spray
- Identify the upper and any membrane. Check the boot’s care instructions and choose a treatment explicitly intended for those materials. Do not assume a product for ordinary fabric is right for suede, nubuck, leather, rubber, or a fabric-and-leather combination.
- Clean the boots first. Remove dirt and residue before reproofing. Nikwax and GEAR AID both advise beginning with clean footwear.
- Check whether the product calls for wet or dry footwear. Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof and Nubuck & Suede Proof are applied to clean, wet footwear. Other products may have different directions, so use the label for the exact spray you have.
- Spot-test and apply as directed. Test a hidden area if color or texture may change. For the two Nikwax proofers, apply from about 15 cm, make sure seams are covered, then wipe off excess after two minutes.
- Let the boots dry as directed. Nikwax directs users to allow natural drying. Do not substitute another product’s drying instructions or assume that a surface that feels dry is ready for use.
How long does waterproof spray last?
There is no universal reapplication interval established for all boots and sprays. Travel + Leisure gives one to two months for frequently worn boots as general advice, not as a manufacturer schedule that applies to every product. How long a treatment remains useful depends on wear and whether the surface treatment remains intact; follow the chosen product’s directions and renew it when water repellency has diminished. A spray restores surface water repellency, but cannot prevent water entering over the boot opening.

What waterproof spray can—and cannot—do
Water-repellent treatment helps water bead and roll off a treated surface while the finish is intact.
