WIRED’s guide, updated in August 2026 after testing dozens of planners over the preceding year, uses these categories for different planning habits rather than naming one universal winner.
Roterunner Purpose Planner: best undated weekly value
Roterunner is the most practical choice when you want a weekly view, generous writing room and the freedom to begin whenever your year actually starts. Its six-month scope also reduces the number of unused pages if you buy midyear.

The official 2026 product page lists the B5 6-Month Edition at $34.99. The book measures 7.5 × 9.8 inches; an A5 version measures 5.8 × 8.3 inches. WIRED labels the model its best weekly planner in the “$30” category, while the manufacturer’s current B5 listing gives the more precise $34.99 figure.

Who should buy it
Choose Roterunner if you plan by week, want room for lists and reflection, or need to start outside January. It is less suitable if you require a dated page for every calendar day or a full 12-month book in one volume.
Hobonichi Techo and Cousin: best for daily pages
Hobonichi is built around writing every day. The paper is unusually thin but designed to be durable, and both formats use a 180-degree lay-flat binding.
Hobonichi Techo A6
The English A6 Planner is a January-start book with one page per day. The 2026 official guide specifies 105 × 148 mm (approximately 4 × 6 inches). Alongside the daily pages are yearly and monthly calendars, a yearly index and bonus pages. Its small footprint suits commuters, bedside journaling and short daily entries, but the A6 page limits how much you can spread across a single day.
Hobonichi Cousin A5
The A5 Cousin uses the same daily-page concept in a larger format and adds weekly spreads before the daily section. That extra weekly layer makes it the better Hobonichi for combining appointments, weekly priorities and detailed daily notes. It takes more desk and bag space than the A6 Techo.

Hobonichi offers January-start books and July-start Techo and Cousin versions. The July editions cover the remainder of calendar year 2026; Hobonichi does not offer a separate academic-year version. If your schedule follows a school year, you will need to treat one of these dated starts as a workaround rather than an exact September-to-August book.

Paper and pen expectations
Tomoe River paper keeps the books slim while supporting extensive writing, but ink drying time and show-through can vary by pen. If you use wet fountain-pen ink, test your preferred combination before filling an entire year.
Cloth & Paper: best modular planner system
Cloth & Paper is the choice when the planner itself should be a system you can rebuild. WIRED added its Travel Notebook as a pick in a March 2026 update. Instead of replacing a bound book, you keep a notebook or binder and swap dated or functional inserts.
Insert formats
The 2026 dated collection includes vertical weekly inserts, weekly task inserts, horizontal weekly inserts, schedule formats and planner bundles. You can combine a calendar layout with task pages, notes or project sections and remove pages that no longer fit your routine.

Pick Hobonichi A6 when you write small and often

Pick Hobonichi Cousin when you need both weekly and daily control

Pick Cloth & Paper when your layout changes

Pick Erin Condren when the school year is non-negotiable
