Because 2025 is over, a meaningful retrospective would need named projects, verified sale terms and consistent post-sale market data. Those facts are not established here, so naming winners or estimating returns would be misleading. Instead, use these four checks to judge any presale claim—and to understand what a defensible comparison would require.
Why there is no reliable “best four” list here
A presale price, promotional ranking or promise of future utility does not establish that a project was high quality, attracted durable demand, had liquid trading after launch or produced a return for buyers. A retrospective ranking would need to compare the same kinds of evidence for every project, on a stated date: sale terms, token rights, delivery, supply and unlocks, security, and actual trading history. Without those facts, a ranked list—or a claim of “massive gains”—would turn unverified promotion into an investment conclusion.
Even a reported price increase would need careful definition. A presale price, first trade, later high and price on a specified date are different measures. None alone tells a reader whether presale participants could sell, what liquidity was available, or what return they realized after fees and other restrictions.
Four checks to apply to a crypto presale
1. Verify who is selling and what the sale actually promises
Independently confirm the project’s identity, promoters, sale platform and written terms. Look for the legal entity behind the offer, where it operates, how funds are handled, when tokens are delivered, and any restrictions on transfers or resale. Treat claims about fundraising, partnerships, exchange listings or audits as claims until you can verify them from a reliable source. A project’s own marketing is not independent confirmation.

Regulatory warnings can be specific to a project and jurisdiction. For example, Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission said on June 5, 2025 that the purported Punisher Coin presale was unauthorized and advised the public to refrain from engaging with it. That alert concerns the named scheme; it is not a finding about all presales or a worldwide ruling. It illustrates why the operator and platform should be checked with the relevant regulator where the offer is being made.
2. Read the token rights, supply and release schedule
Find out what the token does and what holding it entitles a buyer to—if anything. A token may be described as a way to access a product or participate in a network without giving holders ownership, revenue rights, governance power or a claim on project assets. Do not infer rights from a ticker, a white paper’s aspirational language or the word “utility.”

Where project documents provide the information, check total and circulating supply, allocations to the team and other insiders, vesting periods, and scheduled unlocks. These details can affect the number of tokens available to trade and the potential selling pressure. If an important figure or schedule is not disclosed or independently verified, treat it as unknown rather than estimating it.
3. Look for evidence of delivery and security
Separate what exists now from what the project says it plans to build. Check whether a product or network is operating, whether its stated features work, and whether development progress is supported by evidence beyond promotional announcements. Consider dependencies on other networks, software or service providers, as well as how the project operates and protects user assets and information.

The word “audited” by itself does not show what was reviewed or guarantee that a system is secure.
4. Test the liquidity and legal-risk claims
A token’s quoted price does not prove that buyers can sell a meaningful amount at that price. For a retrospective, establish whether and when trading began, where it occurred, and what trading history and liquidity can be verified. Distinguish a first trade from a later high and from a dated market price; do not compare one project’s peak with another project’s ordinary trading price.

Legal treatment also cannot be determined from a project’s label. The SEC’s investor education explains that a crypto asset that is not itself a security may still be offered or sold as part of an investment contract; facts such as promises of managerial effort can matter. The SEC regulates offers and sales of securities, including crypto assets if they are securities. Classification depends on the circumstances, so neither a project’s marketing nor a general article can establish the legal status of a particular token.

If you are comparing projects, use the same dated checklist for each and label each item as independently verified, supported by project documents, or unverified. The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s April 10, 2025 statement identifies disclosure topics relevant to securities offerings in crypto asset markets. Its staff guidance discusses disclosure; it does not decide whether a particular token is a security.
Best Value
| Comparison area | Evidence to look for | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Project status | Working product or network, documented development milestones and evidence of delivery | That a roadmap or announcement means a feature has shipped |
| Token and sale terms | Token function and holder rights, sale price and conditions, supply, allocations, vesting and unlocks where disclosed | That a low presale price or a “utility” label implies value or demand |
| Security and operations | Available audit reports and scope, cybersecurity and operational disclosures, network dependencies | That an audit claim guarantees safety |
| Trading and legal context | Dated trading and liquidity evidence, relevant legal disclosures and jurisdiction-specific regulator information | That a peak price was achievable for buyers, or that a token’s label settles its legal status |
For each number, state its source and date and explain what it measures. Attribute presale totals, supply, exchange listings, audit claims and returns to the evidence that supports them. If evidence is missing or not comparable, say so; do not fill the gap with a projection.
Why expected gains are not a sound basis for buying
The CFTC warns that buying tokens solely in expectation of selling them later at a higher price is speculation and carries considerable risk, regardless of how convincing a white paper or business plan sounds. That warning is especially relevant when a presale emphasizes projected upside but provides little verifiable information about token rights, delivery, unlocks or post-launch liquidity.
Before committing money, decide whether you can afford a total loss, verify the offer and platform independently, and understand how you would receive and hold the tokens. Do not treat a promotion, projected listing price or unverified success story as evidence that you will be able to sell for a profit.
