The 382-hp Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 can be a compelling used performance car, but available evidence does not establish a dependable long-term failure rate for this generation. In the United States, Kelley Blue Book’s current typical dealer fair-purchase prices are $32,400 for a 2020 and $37,300 for a 2021; those are reference points, not appraisals. Judge a specific car by its records, condition, recall status, and warranty—not by its performance figures or owner ratings alone.
Which CLA 45 does “382 horsepower” mean?
It is the second-generation Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 announced in 2019, not the later US-market CLA 45 S rated at 416 hp. Mercedes-Benz specifies a 2.0-liter M139 turbocharged four-cylinder, an eight-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT, and AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with torque control. Its launch figures were 382 hp and 354 lb-ft, with an estimated 0–60 mph time of 4.0 seconds and a 155-mph electronically limited top speed. The optional AMG Driver’s Package raised the stated limit to 168 mph. These are manufacturer specifications, not evidence of durability. Mercedes-Benz’s 2019 announcement describes the launch model.
The 2021 US quick-reference guide lists fuel economy at 20 mpg city, 29 highway, and 23 combined. Equipment and specifications can differ by model year and market, so check the exact car’s documentation rather than applying these figures to every CLA 45. 2021 CLA quick-reference guide.
How reliable is the 382-hp CLA 45?
There is not enough evidence here to assign this generation a definitive long-term reliability rating or failure rate. Kelley Blue Book shows a 4.8/5 reliability rating for the 2021 Mercedes-AMG CLA, but that is consumer sentiment—not a measured rate of engine, transmission, or electrical failures. Individual public owner accounts conflict and cannot establish what is typical. Avoid treating either a favorable rating or an isolated complaint as proof that every car will behave the same way. What the evidence does establish
The CLA 45 combines a high-output turbocharged engine, a dual-clutch transmission, and all-wheel drive. That describes the car’s design and performance, not a predicted repair bill or a known model-wide failure. The available evidence does not justify calling the engine or transmission “bulletproof,” nor does it establish that every example has a particular defect.
NHTSA recall report 21V-354 includes 2020–2021 CLA45 AMG vehicles. A model-year match does not show whether an individual vehicle is affected or whether its repair is complete. What is a used CLA 45 worth?
Kelley Blue Book’s current US typical dealer fair-purchase prices are model-year reference points. KBB says its prices are updated weekly and that a vehicle’s value varies greatly with mileage, condition, and location. They are not guaranteed transaction prices, offers, or appraisals.

How to assess a particular asking price
Compare the car with same-year CLA 45s in the same region that have similar mileage, options, title status, and condition. Then account for accident history, documented maintenance, modifications, tire and brake condition, seller type, and warranty coverage. Request an out-the-door quote, and compare it with local listings and a vehicle-specific valuation. A low asking price can reflect a car’s history or condition rather than a bargain.

Its estimate includes $8,792 for maintenance, $8,472 for repairs, and $17,124 for depreciation. These are Edmunds projections, not a guaranteed bill for a particular car or a reliability statistic. What to check before buying
Because broad reliability data cannot settle the condition of an individual used car, focus on verifiable evidence. For a high-performance vehicle, a professional inspection and complete records are more useful than assuming a clean appearance or a favorable online rating tells the whole story.
- Review maintenance documentation. Request invoices and confirm that service is current for the exact model year and mileage.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Use a Mercedes-AMG-qualified shop to inspect the vehicle and scan its control systems before purchase.
- Verify recall status. Check the VIN with NHTSA and confirm completed work with repair records.
- Inspect for condition and use. Ask about modifications, hard use, and collision repairs. Have the shop check warning lights, leaks, tire matching, and uneven tire wear. Treat these as inspection prompts, not established model-wide defects.
- Confirm warranty details. Verify any remaining factory or certified pre-owned warranty, including exclusions and transfer rules for that specific car and market.
- Price the whole purchase. Weigh the asking price against the car’s mileage, condition, records, inspection results, warranty, and expected running costs—not just its original MSRP or a general valuation.
