Best overall: the Cuisinart SCO-60 Deluxe, which Good Housekeeping reports opened a 32-ounce can in under 10 seconds and shut off automatically in its tests. Choose the Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch if smoother lid edges are your priority, or the rechargeable Kitchen Mama Orbit One if you need a compact handheld opener. These are this article’s editorial picks based on Good Housekeeping Institute testing—not a universal consensus or first-hand testing by The Finance Base.
How these three picks compare
| Opener | Cut and edges | Operation and power | Reported test results | Best fit |

The user holds the lever and listens for a pitch change. | Good Housekeeping reported opening a 32-ounce can in about 10 seconds; its test noted the lever position helped prevent a heavy can from tipping. | People who prioritize smoother edges and can monitor the opener while it runs. |
| Kitchen Mama Orbit One | The cited test summary does not specify cut style or edge finish. | Handheld, rechargeable by USB-C; one-button operation and automatic shut-off after the lid is severed. It operates flat on the counter. | Good Housekeeping named it best handheld; the cited summary provides no opening-time figure. | Limited storage or occasional use where a compact, rechargeable opener is useful. |
Performance and test details in this table are Good Housekeeping Institute findings reported in its March 30, 2026 guide. The publisher says its Kitchen & Cooking Lab tested nine electric openers, using 6-ounce tomato paste, 15-ounce beans, and 32-ounce tomatoes. Manufacturer pages confirm product lines and stated features; they are not the source for the comparative test results.
Which electric can opener is best overall?
Cuisinart SCO-60 Deluxe
The SCO-60 is the strongest choice if you open cans often or regularly use large ones. Good Housekeeping reported that it held cans up to 32 ounces securely, opened a 32-ounce can in less than 10 seconds, and shut off automatically in every test. Its removable lever also makes cleanup simpler than a fixed mechanism.
Its top-cut design is a trade-off: the test team saw some bumps on the separated lids, though it described the edges as smooth. The upright body also takes more storage space than a handheld opener. Choose it for speed and automatic stopping rather than the smallest footprint or a side-cut lid.

Which opener leaves the smoothest edges?
Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch
Good Housekeeping reported that the Smooth Touch made the smoothest cuts among the upright models it tested. Its side-cut design separates the lid at the seam, making this the pick to consider when the feel of the lid edge matters. The outlet reported it opened a 32-ounce can in about 10 seconds, and its test found that the lever placement helped keep a heavy can from tipping.
This model requires more attention than the Cuisinart: keep pressure on the lever and listen for the change in pitch that signals the lid has separated. It does not shut off automatically, so it is not a hands-free option. Hamilton Beach’s official can and jar opener catalog lists SmoothTouch side-cutting models and says they open regular and pop-top cans; it shows multiple variants, so check the model suffix on the product listing before buying.

Which electric can opener is best for a small kitchen?
Kitchen Mama Orbit One
The Orbit One is the compact handheld choice. Good Housekeeping named it its best handheld and described one-button operation, flat-on-counter use, USB-C recharging, and automatic shut-off once the lid is severed. Its smaller format is useful when an upright opener’s counter and cabinet footprint is inconvenient.
Account for charging, and check the current package contents and price before buying: neither is established here. Good Housekeeping described it as pricier than other options it liked, but did not provide a price in the reported test notes. The outlet’s summary also gives no opening-time comparison with the upright models.

- STABLE BASE: The wide, non-slip base produces stability, keeping it immobile during use

- SLEEK DESIGN: The sleek design adds a modern touch to your kitchen, nicely complementing appliances
How to choose between an upright and a handheld opener
The form factor changes more than storage. Upright models use a wall outlet and take counter or cabinet space, but are generally faster and better suited to frequent use and larger cans. Handheld models are easier to store and may operate hands-free, but need charging and can be slower. Among these specific picks, the Kitchen Mama is rechargeable; the two upright recommendations are countertop appliances.
- Choose an upright if you open cans often, want a stable appliance for tall cans, or prefer a plug-in model.
- Choose a handheld if storage is tight or you open cans occasionally and do not mind keeping the device charged.
- Choose side-cut if smoother-feeling lid edges are a priority. A top-cut opener may be faster, but its separated lid can have bumps or roughness.
- Check the stopping method if you want to step away: automatic shut-off is a distinct convenience, not a feature to assume across electric openers.
Good Housekeeping’s test spanned small tomato paste cans, standard beans, and tall 32-ounce tomatoes, rather than judging openers only on a single everyday can. Its findings make stability and capacity relevant even if most of your use is with smaller cans.
Rank #4

- STURDY: Base prevents any sliding or tipping

Safety and model checks
Follow the manual for the exact opener you own; operating and stopping behavior can vary by model. For example, Hamilton Beach’s 76606ZA Use & Care manual warns against opening pressurized aerosol-type cans or cans containing flammable liquids. It also tells users to release the activation lever before unplugging. That manual says the motor does not automatically stop or lift the lid when the can has opened, so do not assume a different model’s automatic shut-off applies to it.
For other Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch listings, verify the full model suffix and the features shown for that variant. Cuisinart’s electric can opener category and Hamilton Beach’s catalog are useful for confirming maker-listed products and features, but comparative speed and edge-quality claims here come from Good Housekeeping’s reported tests.

Why these three are not a universal ranking
Good Housekeeping’s nine-opener test is the basis for this lineup and its specific performance claims. Another roundup can reach different picks: Reviewed’s 2026 electric can opener roundup, updated July 26, 2025, names the Cuisinart CCO-50BKN and Hamilton Beach 76380Z among its favorites. That difference is a reminder that a recommendation depends on the tested models and the criteria that matter to you.
Good Housekeeping also names a Proctor Silex Electric Can Opener its best value, but the available test summary does not provide a precise model number or detailed result. Confirm the exact model and its specifications from a current maker or retailer listing before treating it as a like-for-like alternative.
