Best Buy offered the ASUS Vivobook 14 X1404VA-V14.I38128 for $199.99 during Black Friday weekend 2025. For that price, it paired a 13th-generation Intel Core i3 with a 14-inch Full HD IPS screen—an unusually capable combination for basic Windows work. But it was not independently established as the cheapest Windows 11 laptop on the market, and the deal has expired: Best Buy’s listing showed the model unavailable new as of August 18, 2026.
The catch was the configuration: 8GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD and Windows 11 Home in S mode. It made sense for browsing, schoolwork and everyday office tasks at $199.99; it was a poor fit for gaming, large application libraries or demanding multitasking.
What was the $199 ASUS Vivobook deal?
The deal was for the Quiet Blue ASUS Vivobook 14, model X1404VA-V14.I38128. Best Buy advertised it at $199.99 on November 30, 2025, during its Black Friday weekend promotion; deal coverage reported free shipping. A deal record from Slickdeals and the Best Buy product listing document the offer and configuration.
Deal coverage described roughly $449.99 as the regular price. Treat that as a retailer or deal-page comparison price, not proof that the laptop routinely sold for that amount everywhere. The original promotion is over, and Best Buy’s archived listing reported the laptop unavailable new as of August 18, 2026. A search result showing the old price does not mean it is still available at checkout.

Was it really the cheapest Windows 11 laptop?
That claim is too broad to verify. The evidence supports calling it one of the cheapest prominently available new Windows 11 laptops from a major retailer during that Black Friday weekend. It does not establish that it was the lowest-priced Windows laptop across every U.S. retailer, location, clearance sale or marketplace listing.
Other laptops were advertised near $199.99, including an ASUS Vivobook Go 15 at Office Depot. That listing is not a clean direct comparison: its product title and specifications disagree about storage capacity. You can check the Office Depot listing, but verify the exact configuration before comparing it with another laptop. The original ASUS deal is best understood as an unusually low price for a new Windows laptop with a Core i3 and Full HD IPS display—not a proven market-wide record.

Where this laptop was a good value
Core i3 performance for everyday work
The Core i3-1315U has two performance cores and four efficiency cores. That class of processor is suitable for ordinary browsing, documents, spreadsheets, email, video calls, streaming, schoolwork and light photo editing. It is not a gaming or workstation processor, and this configuration is not a sensible choice for demanding video editing, 3D rendering, large development projects or heavy virtual-machine use. TechRadar’s December 1, 2025 deal coverage likewise framed the processor as appropriate for basic productivity rather than demanding applications.

The 1920 × 1080 resolution gives documents and web pages more room and detail than a 1366 × 768 screen, while IPS technology generally offers better viewing angles than TN. The listing establishes a standard 60Hz display, not premium brightness, wide-gamut color, HDR or touch support. It is a practical screen for everyday use, not a creator-grade panel.
An SSD, with a tight capacity limit
The 128GB PCIe SSD is preferable to relying on slow eMMC storage, but capacity is the more important limitation. Windows, updates, recovery data and installed apps use part of the drive, leaving less than the advertised capacity for personal files. Documents and browser-based work are manageable; large game libraries, extensive offline video, creative suites and years of accumulated files can fill it quickly.

What the low price compromised
8GB of RAM limits multitasking headroom
Eight gigabytes can handle routine office work and moderate browsing, but it is a minimum rather than comfortable long-term headroom in 2026. Many open browser tabs, large spreadsheets, video meetings and creative applications can compete for memory and slow the system. The retailer data indicates 8GB onboard and no additional SO-DIMM installed; do not assume the memory can be upgraded. If you expect heavy multitasking or want more room to grow, prioritize a 16GB configuration.
128GB storage can become an everyday annoyance
Use cloud storage or an external drive for files that do not need to stay on the laptop. If you rely on a large offline media collection or want several large applications installed at once, a model with at least 512GB is a more suitable target. Cloud services can involve recurring charges, so factor those into the cost rather than treating online storage as automatically free.
S mode restricts software installation
Windows 11 Home in S mode is Windows 11, but it limits app installation primarily to Microsoft Store apps and keeps Microsoft Edge as the default browser environment. That can be inconvenient if you need Chrome, Firefox, development tools, legacy software or a game that is not available through the Store.

Leaving S mode is free, but the switch is one-way: you generally cannot return to S mode without resetting or reinstalling Windows. To leave it, open Settings > System > Activation, find Switch out of S mode, choose Go to the Store, then select Get on the Microsoft Store page. This changes the mode; it is not the same as paying to upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro.
Integrated graphics and budget-class hardware
Intel UHD integrated graphics are adequate for video playback and basic visual tasks, not modern gaming or graphics-heavy creative work. A budget laptop at this price also should not be mistaken for a premium machine: the deal evidence does not establish a backlit keyboard, touchscreen, premium display features or all-day battery life under a defined test. Check the exact retailer listing for any feature that matters to you.

What to check if you find a similar deal now
The 2025 $199.99 offer is historical. If a similar Vivobook appears, check the listing and checkout details before comparing it with this deal. ASUS sells many similarly named configurations, and a different suffix can mean materially different memory, storage, processor, display or operating-system details.

Alternatives if you need more room to grow
Another budget ASUS laptop
The Vivobook Go 15 is a possible comparison: Office Depot listed an E1504FA-OS34 configuration at $199.99, with a 15.6-inch Full HD display, Ryzen 3 7320U and 8GB memory. However, the listing’s title says 256GB while its specifications say 512GB, so confirm the drive capacity and other details directly before treating it as equivalent.
A higher-capacity Vivobook
If you can spend more, prioritize 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD or larger, then compare the exact processor and Windows edition. ASUS lists current Vivobook models and retailer availability on its Vivobook 15 shopping page and Vivobook 14 availability page; prices and configurations vary by retailer.
A Chromebook for browser-only work
A Chromebook may be a better-value choice if your work is browser-based, but it is not a Windows substitute for applications that require Windows. Check that the school or workplace software you need runs on ChromeOS before choosing one.
A refurbished business laptop
A refurbished Latitude, ThinkPad or EliteBook may provide a sturdier chassis or more comfortable keyboard for a similar budget. The trade-off is greater variation: hardware is older, battery condition can differ, and warranty and cosmetic condition depend on the refurbisher. Compare the specific seller’s return and warranty terms rather than assuming all refurbished machines are alike.
