Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

This guide combines 2025 reported losses, complaint volume, everyday exposure and the prominence of newer tactics. The FBI recorded 1,008,597 Internet Crime Complaint Center complaints and nearly $21 billion in reported losses in 2025; the FTC recorded about $16 billion in reported consumer fraud losses, including $3.5 billion from imposter scams. These datasets measure different populations and overlap, and unreported losses mean the real total is higher.
Use each section to identify the opening approach, what the criminal wants, the warning signs and the safest response. Many incidents combine categories—for example, a romance scam that becomes a cryptocurrency investment fraud or a phishing message that leads to account takeover.

How to interpret “biggest”
Loss-based rankings highlight investment fraud, business-email compromise and tech-support fraud. Complaint-volume rankings elevate phishing, spoofing and extortion. Exposure-based rankings include shopping ads, package texts, toll notices and social-media approaches that may produce smaller individual losses but reach millions of people. The list below uses a transparent mix rather than pretending that FTC and FBI totals are directly additive.

1. Cryptocurrency investment and “pig-butchering” scams
How it starts
An unsolicited contact begins as friendship, romance, networking or casual conversation. After trust develops, the person introduces a supposedly sophisticated cryptocurrency opportunity and directs you to a convincing platform showing fabricated profits.
What they want
They seek cryptocurrency sent to a wallet or exchange they control. When you try to withdraw, they demand “taxes,” verification payments or fees. “Pig butchering” describes the long-con pattern; it is not a separate FBI category and often overlaps with romance and investment fraud.
Red flags and response
- Guaranteed or unusually steady returns.
- A stranger supplying investment instructions or insisting you leave a mainstream platform.
- A fee required before a withdrawal.
Do not send more money. Independently verify any investment firm through a regulator or official financial-services directory. The FBI identifies investment fraud, including cryptocurrency schemes, as the largest component of reported IC3 losses in 2025 (FBI; 2025 IC3 report).
2. Business-email compromise and fake invoices
How it starts
A criminal impersonates or compromises an executive, vendor, lawyer, realtor or finance employee by email, text or a messaging app. The message demands an urgent wire or changes bank details, sometimes in an existing conversation.
Warning signs
- Last-minute payment-instruction changes.
- Secrecy, urgency or a request to bypass approval rules.
- A sender address differing by one character from the genuine one.
- Instructions that cannot be confirmed through a known phone number.
Verify every change using a previously known contact method, not the details in the new message. Businesses should require dual approval for wires and treat an email thread as unproven identity. Real-estate buyers and sellers are frequent targets (FBI 2025 IC3 report).
3. Tech-support and “phantom hacker” scams
How it starts
A pop-up, call, email or text claims your device or bank account is compromised. The caller persuades you to install remote-access software, then impersonates a technology company, bank or law enforcement and orders you to move funds.
Rank #2

- Refillable and Long Term Use: this confidential stamp can cover a total length of up to 100 meter/ 109 yards, approximately 3,200 prints are covered, pattern width is about 0.78 inches; When ink runs out, you can refill the security stamp with ink
- Easy to Use: just continuous roll the address blocker roller stamp to conceal information, and roll on a second layer for maximum protection, works on paper, envelopes, folders, address labels, etc., please note that may not work on smooth surfaces
- How to Refill the Ink: there are 4 pieces of ID stamp refills, each is about 1.5 ml, you just need to unscrew the cap of the ink bottle (not disposable, you can close the cap for next time of use), then insert it into the hole on the side of the stamp, then turn it upside down, about 5 minutes later, the most of the ink will be replenished to the security roller stamp
What they demand
They may request remote control, cryptocurrency, gift cards, cash, gold or valuables collected by a supposed courier.
- Never call a number in an unexpected pop-up.
- Do not grant remote access to an unsolicited caller.
- Do not move money to a “safe” account; legitimate companies and agencies do not work that way.
Find support through the company’s official website. The FBI and FTC describe the escalation pattern and prevention steps (FBI guidance; FTC alert).
4. Phishing, spoofing and account takeover
Typical opening messages
Fake bank-fraud alerts, delivery problems, password-expiration notices, tax or toll warnings and “security” messages from Microsoft, Google, Apple, Amazon or PayPal lead to a counterfeit login page.
What is stolen
Criminals seek passwords, card details, one-time authentication codes and access to email or financial accounts. In 2025, polished writing, brand-accurate layouts, spoofed caller ID and realistic follow-up calls made grammar a poor test of legitimacy.
Do not use the link or number in an unexpected alert. Open the official app or type the known address yourself. A password manager can resist autofilling on an unfamiliar domain, but it cannot replace independent verification (FBI).
5. Government, bank and business impersonation
How it starts
The caller claims to be your bank, the IRS, Social Security Administration, FBI, police, a utility, delivery company or a retailer. You are told to transfer money, reveal a verification code, buy gift cards or provide identity information.

Pressure tactics
- Threats of arrest, account closure, deportation or legal action.
- Instructions to keep the call secret or stay on the line while paying.
- A demand to move money “to protect it.”
Caller ID proves nothing. Hang up and call the organization using a number from its official website or your statement. Fake reporting and recovery websites can impersonate government entities, too (FTC loss data; FTC enforcement actions).
6. Romance and relationship scams
How it starts
A person on a dating app, Facebook, Instagram, a game, a messaging service or a professional network develops intense intimacy while avoiding an in-person meeting or reliable video call.
The turn
A medical, travel or family emergency prompts a request for money, or the “partner” introduces cryptocurrency investing. Requests for secrecy, gift cards, wires or crypto are decisive warning signs.
Nearly 60% of people who reported losing money to a romance scam in 2025 said it began on social media, according to FTC data. Reverse-image searches and independent identity checks help, but never send money to someone you have not independently verified (FTC advice; FTC social-media data).
7. Fake shopping, social-media-ad and counterfeit-site scams
How it starts
A social-media advertisement offers an implausibly cheap product and links to a site copying a familiar retailer. You receive nothing, counterfeit goods or a request for extra “delivery” fees, while your payment details may be harvested.
Checks before buying
- Search for the retailer independently rather than clicking the ad.
- Check the domain, physical address, support number and return policy.
- Be wary of cryptocurrency, gift-card, wire or peer-to-peer payment demands.
Use a credit card when possible because it generally offers stronger dispute rights than irreversible methods. Shopping scams were the most reported scam on social media in 2025 in FTC data (FTC data spotlight).

- Personal Information Protection: there are 4 pieces of address blocker roller stamps in 2 different sizes, and 5 pieces of 1.5 ml inks, a total of 9 pieces. - Re Inking Unlimitedly: the information blocker stamp can cover information of the length about 100 meters. They can be refilled with oil for repeated use, saving time and energy
- Cover Fast: our identity protection rollers come in 2 different sizes, and you can choose different sizes according to different areas of information to cover large amounts of private information in a fast and clean way, avoiding identity theft and rejecting privacy disclosure harassment
- Easy to Use: just remove the lid on the ID stamp blocker roller and open it, and then gently slide it on the place where the information needs to be covered. It is suitable for most ordinary paper with black words, and can protect your personal privacy in time
- Save Time and Energy: compared with the shredder, the personal confidential stamp has a small size, easy to carry, can be applied anytime and anywhere. Compared to the marker, it covers a larger area and can be quickly covered with a single swipe. There is no need to worry about whether you can not protect your privacy in time
8. Fake jobs, recruitment and task scams
How it starts
A recruiter contacts you by text, WhatsApp, Telegram, social media or a job board with unusually high pay for simple remote tasks. A fake platform displays earnings and then requires a deposit to withdraw them.
Recommended Free Tools
What else they seek
Fraudsters may send a check for “equipment,” ask you to forward money, or collect a Social Security number, identity documents or bank details before a real interview.
- Never pay to receive wages, training or equipment.
- Verify the employer through a corporate domain and independently listed phone number.
- Do not use your account to transfer money for a supposed employer.
This is a high-relevance category for job seekers, although official datasets do not consistently isolate every task-scam subtype.
9. Extortion, sextortion and blackmail
How it starts
The criminal threatens to publish intimate images, conversations, browsing history or alleged evidence of wrongdoing. A stolen password or fabricated screenshot may be used to sound credible.
What to do
Do not pay, negotiate or send additional images. Preserve messages, wallet addresses and payment records; block and report the account. For a minor, involve a trusted adult immediately and contact law enforcement. Extortion was among the FBI’s most frequently reported 2025 complaint types (2025 IC3 report).

How AI changes the approach
Voice and image generators make family emergencies, executive requests, celebrity investment pitches, romance profiles and government communications more convincing. AI is an accelerant across existing fraud categories, not always a separate crime.

Verification rule
Use a family or workplace phrase, call back through a known number and require a second channel before sending money. Ask personal questions a synthetic voice or video cannot answer. Do not rely on voice recognition or caller ID alone. The FBI identified AI-related complaints among the costliest elements of its 2025 report (FBI).
11. QR-code, toll, delivery and parking-payment scams
How it starts
An unexpected text or posted QR code claims that a toll, parking fee, package charge or account balance is overdue. The code opens a lookalike payment or login page that captures card data, credentials or a one-time code.
Safe response
Open the official agency or carrier app manually. Type the known web address instead of scanning the code. Check for a mismatched domain, a tiny balance paired with an urgent deadline, or a request for a password to pay a minor charge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors12. Recovery, refund and “help after the scam” scams
How it starts
After a loss, someone claiming to be a lawyer, regulator, investigator, exchange or recovery specialist promises to retrieve your money for an upfront retainer, tax, blockchain fee or identity-verification payment.
Why it is dangerous
Victims may be found through public complaints or stolen lists. Legitimate reporting agencies do not charge a fee to accept a report, and no legitimate service can guarantee cryptocurrency recovery. The FTC has warned about fake reporting and recovery websites (FTC warning).
If you paid or shared information
- Stop communicating with the scammer and do not pay a “final” fee.
- Contact your bank, card issuer, payment app, wire service or cryptocurrency exchange immediately; ask whether the transaction can be frozen, recalled or disputed. Crypto recovery is often dependent on the recipient and may be impossible.
- From a clean device, change compromised passwords, revoke unknown sessions and enable multifactor authentication.
- If identity information was exposed, use IdentityTheft.gov and consider a credit freeze or fraud alert. A freeze restricts new-credit access; monitoring only alerts you after certain activity.
- Report the incident at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and, for internet-enabled crime, IC3.gov.
- Preserve emails, URLs, phone numbers, screenshots, receipts, wallet addresses and transaction IDs.
Reporting supports investigations but does not itself reverse a payment or guarantee reimbursement. Be suspicious of anyone who contacts you afterward offering paid recovery.
A 60-second message check
- Pause: urgency is a tactic, not proof.
- Identify the requested action and payment method. Crypto, cash, gift cards and many bank transfers are difficult to reverse.
- Verify independently through an app, saved number or typed official address.
- Ask someone you trust to review the request, especially when secrecy is demanded.
- Refuse remote access, passwords and one-time codes.
Free controls and optional paid tools
Start with unique passwords, multifactor authentication, software updates, transaction alerts, built-in device security and an official credit freeze. No antivirus, VPN, identity-monitoring service or password manager can reliably stop social engineering when someone is manipulated into authorizing a payment.
Paid products can add convenience, but compare overlap and renewal terms. Aura bundles identity monitoring, device and privacy tools; Norton/LifeLock combines security and identity features; Malwarebytes emphasizes malware and browser protection; and Bitwarden focuses on password management, with business plans listed from $4 per user per month billed annually for Teams and $6 for Enterprise. Promotional and renewal prices, insurance limits and eligibility rules vary. Buy only through a vendor’s independently typed official site, never a pop-up or suspicious message.
Quick Recap
Who needs extra safeguards?
- Older adults: Discuss investment, tech-support, government-impersonation and recovery scams without implying that age determines vulnerability.
- Parents and teens: Establish a family verification phrase and a no-secrecy rule for threats involving images or money.
- Job seekers: Verify recruiters and never pay to receive wages.
- Businesses and home buyers: Require call-back verification and dual approval for payment changes.
