There isn’t one best running legging for every runner: the right pair depends on what you carry, how much warmth you need, and whether the waistband and fit stay comfortable through repeated movement. Shape’s guide, updated March 16, 2026, is the exact-title ranking; the product examples below from other running and fitness publications can help you compare features, but they are not a reconstruction of Shape’s full 11 picks.
How to choose running leggings for your needs
Start with the conditions you actually run in and what you expect your tights to do. A useful pair should feel secure without constant adjustment, provide storage suited to your essentials, and have a fabric and length that work for the weather and your body.
- For a phone or gels: Check pocket size, placement, and how securely items are held while you run. A thigh pocket can make a phone or gels easy to reach; it is not interchangeable with a zip pocket for valuables.
- For a waistband that stays put: Look for a fit that feels stable in motion. Coach’s testing guide highlights waistband stability and drawstrings as features that can help reduce mid-run readjustments.
- For changing weather: Breathable, fast-drying fabric is a useful starting point. For colder or exposed routes, consider thermal fabric or wind- and water-resistant construction; ventilation can matter when conditions are warmer.
- For length and fit: Compare available inseam options and how the waistband, seams, and leg fit feel on your body. Shape notes that some shorter runners may prefer 7/8 length, but length remains a personal fit choice.
Running leggings with phone pockets and secure storage
Pocket design is about more than the number of pockets. A phone pocket should hold your device securely and comfortably; gel storage should be accessible during a run; and a zip pocket is better suited to small valuables you do not want to lose. Check pocket placement and capacity against the items you carry rather than assuming that a high pocket count means better storage.
Shape’s guide attributes this advice to coach Kunz: “Zipper pockets are ideal — if you have your credit card or ID, you don’t have to worry they’re going to fall out.” Treat that as advice about securing small essentials, not a guarantee that any particular zip pocket fits every item.

Examples to compare by running priority
These are examples described by Coach, not a verified list of Shape’s 11 ranked products. Model details, regional prices, and availability can change, so confirm the exact variant before buying.
| Running priority | Example and reported features | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday running and storage | Coach describes the Lululemon Fast and Free Tight as having five pockets, a high waistband with a drawstring, Nulux fabric, and multiple lengths. Coach lists an RRP of $128 / £118 for the product in its guide; those figures are region-specific and may change. | Whether the pocket layout fits your phone and essentials; preferred length; feel and weight of the fabric; and current local price. |
| Lower-cost option | Coach names Sundried Women’s Infinity Leggings as a value pick, with two leg pockets and a zip pocket at the back waist. The guide does not establish a price here. | Current price and availability, alongside whether the pockets and fabric suit your runs. |
| Phone or gel access | Coach describes On Performance Tights as having a thigh pocket for a phone or gels, a rear zip pocket, a high waistband, and recycled polyester. Coach lists an RRP of $119.99 / £105; the listed figures are region-specific and may change. | How the thigh pocket sits with your device, the feel of seams and fabric, and current local price. |
| Cold-weather trail running | Coach’s cold-weather pick is the Montane Women’s Slipstream Thermal Trail Running Tights. | Thermal construction, wind exposure on your routes, storage, and whether the tights suit trail use. |
Coach author Camilla Artault reports that the Fast and Free tights “didn’t budge an inch.” This is her reported product experience, not a guarantee that they will fit every runner the same way.

Breathable tights, warm tights, and seasonal trade-offs
Running tights that work well in mild weather may not be warm enough for cold, windy routes. Conversely, a thermal pair may feel too warm when you are running hard in milder conditions. Shape recommends breathable, fast-drying fabric and discusses fleece, wind- and water-resistant shells, and ventilation for different weather; Nike Canada’s running advice also prioritizes breathable styles.
Running coach Nicole McComic, founder of Soul and Strides, says she looks for “a fast-drying, breathable, moisture-wicking fabric.” Use those qualities as a starting point, then match insulation and weather protection to your usual route and season rather than treating one fabric weight as suitable year-round.

Fit and waistband stability matter on the run
Repeated movement can expose a waistband or fit problem that is easy to miss when standing still. Try the leggings with the movements you make on a run, and notice whether the waistband rolls or slips, seams rub, or pockets shift under load. CPT Jess Paris says she looks for high-waisted leggings with a more defined waistline and seams designed to stay in place while remaining lightweight.
If you prefer an adjustable fit, a drawstring may help keep the waist secure. Coach’s description of the Fast and Free includes a drawstring, while its testing coverage identifies waistband stability as a practical concern. Neither feature alone guarantees a comfortable fit; sizing and body shape still matter.

What the 2026 guides do—and do not—establish
Different publications use different scopes and testing methods, so their selections should not be combined into one definitive ranking. Shape’s guide, updated March 16, 2026, is the source for the exact-title selection and its attributed coach advice. Coach says its author Camilla Artault had tested and reviewed running leggings since 2018, while noting that its guide includes products that were tested or, in some cases, considered without testing.
Runner’s World said on August 27, 2026, that testing for women’s leggings for the 2026/2027 cool and cold season was still ongoing. Its ranking should therefore be read in that context rather than as a closed season-wide evaluation. Verywell Fit’s 2026 testing details concern men’s running tights, not women’s leggings: it reports nine pairs tested by runners who ran at least three times weekly in different locations and weather, evaluating fit, durability, comfort, warmth, performance, and value. Those details describe a broader testing approach, not direct evidence for women’s products.
