What is verified about the 2026 bar-soap test?
Consumer Reports’ 2026 article says it tested 11 scented and unscented bar soaps, assessing how drying they were and how long they lasted. It also says ingredients in top bars were assessed with SkinSafe data. The publicly accessible search result does not provide the complete product list, exact variants, scores, test methods, or final rankings, so it is not possible to identify the 11 winners or assign a ranking reliably.
Dr. Bronner’s and Irish Spring appear in the search result as products in the test, but the available information does not establish which variants were tested or how either performed. Their inclusion is not a recommendation or a result.

How to choose a bar for your skin and routine
For sensitive or eczema-prone skin
Start with your known triggers, not a broad “gentle” or “hypoallergenic” label. NBC Select advises sensitive-skin readers to avoid triggers such as fragrance and physical exfoliants. Compare the full current ingredient list with ingredients you know you react to; a category label or seal does not establish that a product will suit every person.
For dry skin
Look for a cleansing format and ingredients that fit your routine. Treat those as product details to check on the current package, not proof that a bar will prevent dryness for every user.

For acne-prone skin
Keep acne-focused cleansing separate from ordinary body washing. PanOxyl’s bar contains 10% benzoyl peroxide, an active ingredient; use it only as directed on the current label, and consider the guide’s sensitive-skin caution. Do not infer from the roundup category that it will work for every kind of acne or skin.
For everyday cleansing and value
Compare price alongside bar size, multipack quantity, packaging, and how long a bar lasts in your own routine. Consumer Reports says longevity was part of its test, but its accessible result does not give product-level durability or value findings. A lower shelf price alone cannot establish better value if package sizes or wear rates differ.

Are bar soaps safer than body wash?
Not as a general rule. A 2017 study by Siegel, Mounessa, Dellavalle, and Dunnick compared ingredient lists for 50 bar soaps and 50 body washes selected from Amazon listings as of October 6, 2016. In that historical sample, the authors found more preservative and surfactant allergens in the sampled body washes, but no difference in fragrance allergens. They also reported polyethylene glycol in 38% of sampled body washes and 8% of sampled bar soaps. Those percentages describe that sample, not today’s market.
The authors noted that retailer ingredient listings could be inaccurate and that labels did not always identify specific fragrance compounds. The study does not establish that bar soap is universally safer, hypoallergenic, or suitable for someone with a particular allergy. If you have a known contact allergy, check the product’s current ingredient list and avoid your known triggers.

- Define the need: ordinary cleansing, dry skin, sensitivity, eczema-prone skin, acne-focused washing, or rough texture.
- Check the format and ingredients: determine whether the product is a traditional soap or a soap-free cleansing bar, and review the full current ingredient list for known triggers and relevant actives.
- Consider fragrance and exfoliation: if you are sensitive, avoid ingredients or physical exfoliants that you know irritate you.
- Compare like with like: check bar weight, number of bars, price, and packaging before deciding which option offers value.
- Keep the evidence straight: distinguish a publication’s editorial recommendation from a documented test outcome. The accessible Consumer Reports result does not support a complete 11-product ranking.
