Money Inc’s 2022 list put King Mohammed VI first, but its figures are media estimates, not audited net-worth valuations, and other outlets differed.

Money Inc’s May 2022 list ranked ten African monarchs by estimated wealth, led by Morocco’s King Mohammed VI at $2.1 billion. These are the publication’s estimates—not audited personal net-worth figures—and the article does not explain a transparent calculation method. Other outlets published different selections and estimates in 2022, so the ranking is best read as a dated media list, not a definitive financial league table.

The 10 monarchs in Money Inc’s 2022 ranking

The amounts below reproduce Money Inc’s estimates and order from its article, “The 10 Richest African Monarchs in 2022,” dated May 23, 2022 and updated May 22, 2022. They should not be treated as independently verified valuations of personal assets.

Rank Name Money Inc estimate
1 King Mohammed VI $2.1 billion
2 Fredrick Obateru Akinruntan $300 million
3 King Mswati III $200 million
4 Sa’adu Abubakar $100 million
5 Lamido Sanusi Lamido $80 million
6 Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi $70 million
7 Oba Rilwan Akiolu $40 million
8 Godfrey Emiko $30 million
9 Otumfuo Osei Tutu II $14 million
10 Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekuzi I $10 million

Why “African monarch” is not a consistent comparison group

Popular lists can place sovereign monarchs alongside traditional rulers whose authority is regional or community-based. Those roles differ in constitutional status, the assets associated with an institution, and the kinds of income that may be attributed to an individual. A ranking that does not define its scope clearly may therefore compare unlike cases, even before considering whether its wealth figures are reliable.

Business Elites Africa made this scope issue explicit in a February 9, 2022 article about five monarchs, calling the selection debatable in a continent with many traditional rulers. Its list also reported a different estimate for Mswati III than Money Inc did. The two publications’ figures should not be blended: they represent separate editorial estimates, not corroboration. See Business Elites Africa’s article.

What Money Inc says contributes to the fortunes

Money Inc describes a mix of private business, investments, royal position, and inherited or government-related resources. It points, for example, to Fredrick Obateru Akinruntan’s Obat Oil, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s background in transport and mining equipment, and salary and investments in its account of King Mswati III. These are the article’s descriptions, not an independently documented breakdown of each person’s assets.

Business Elites Africa likewise discusses varied sources, including personal business, statutory income, and community generosity. Neither article establishes a common accounting boundary for personal holdings, institutional or royal assets, public-linked resources, and wealth held or controlled for others. That makes a precise apples-to-apples comparison difficult.

How much confidence should readers place in the amounts?

The 2022 Money Inc article presents dollar estimates but, in the material available, does not provide a transparent valuation method or independently verifiable asset-by-asset evidence. The second 2022 list demonstrates that estimates can differ, but it does not validate either outlet’s numbers. Accordingly, the amounts are useful only as claims attributed to Money Inc at the time of publication—not as current net worth, audited balances, or a settled ranking.

An older NewsGhana list described excluding wealth held or controlled by rulers in trust for a nation or territory. That is an example of one possible boundary between personal and public or institutional wealth; it does not verify Money Inc’s 2022 estimates. See NewsGhana’s older list.
