These are reported contract values and estimates—not a verified network payroll: networks generally do not disclose individual commentator compensation, and several figures include work beyond NFL games.
This ranking defines an NFL announcer as a play-by-play broadcaster or game analyst who calls NFL games. It ranks reported annualized compensation, not net worth or income from unrelated sports-media roles. The figures available as of October 8, 2026, vary in recency and reliability, so the lower positions are provisional rather than a verified league-wide top ten.

Reported NFL announcer pay, ranked
| Rank | Broadcaster | NFL role and network | Reported annualized figure | Report and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tom Brady | Lead analyst, Fox | $37.5 million | Associated Press reported a 10-year, $375 million contract in 2025; annualized contract value, not independently disclosed annual payroll. Recounted by Front Office Sports in 2026. |
| 2 (tie) | Tony Romo | Game analyst, CBS | $18 million | Front Office Sports reported a 10-year, $180 million contract in 2026; the annual figure is the reported deal value divided across its term. |
| 2 (tie) | Troy Aikman | Game analyst, ESPN/ABC | About $18 million | Front Office Sports reported a five-year, $90 million contract in 2026; annualized value. |
| 2 (tie) | Joe Buck | Play-by-play announcer, ESPN/ABC | About $18 million | Front Office Sports reported a six-year, $108 million ESPN extension in 2026; annualized value. |
| 5 | Kirk Herbstreit | Game analyst, ESPN/ABC and Amazon | $16 million–$18 million | AS USA reported this estimated combined annual compensation in 2026; Bleacher Report listed $16 million in September 2026. He also works college football, so this is not an NFL-only figure. |
| 6 | Al Michaels | Play-by-play announcer, Amazon | About $15 million | AS USA estimate, updated September 23, 2026. Amazon has not publicly disclosed his precise current contract terms. |
| 7 | Cris Collinsworth | Game analyst, NBC | $12.4 million per season | Sportsnaut estimate published in 2024; dated and not an independently confirmed current contract figure. |
| 8 (tie) | Jim Nantz | Play-by-play announcer, CBS | More than $10 million; older estimate: $10.5 million | Front Office Sports reported a salary increase in 2026. Sportsnaut’s 2024 estimate was $10.5 million and covered his work across sports, not NFL alone. |
| 8 (tie) | Mike Tirico | Play-by-play announcer, NBC | $10.5 million | Sportsnaut estimate published in 2024; contract terms were not confirmed, and his work includes events beyond NFL games. |
| 10 | Greg Olsen | Game analyst, Fox | $3 million in 2024 | Dated Sportsnaut estimate from after Fox moved him out of its lead analyst role; may not represent later compensation or assignments. |
How to interpret the reported salaries
Annualized contract value is not necessarily annual pay
For Brady, Romo, Aikman and Buck, the widely cited annual figures come from dividing reported multi-year contract totals by the number of years. That makes them useful comparisons, but it does not establish the timing or structure of payments, whether every dollar is guaranteed, or what each person is paid specifically for NFL broadcasts.
Several figures include other work
Herbstreit’s estimate combines ESPN/ABC and Amazon compensation and includes his college-football work. Nantz and Tirico call other sports and events, too. Their reported compensation should not be read as pay solely for NFL assignments.

Why the bottom of the list is less certain
Networks do not publish a complete salary schedule for their commentators, and the available reports do not establish an independently verified top-ten dataset for 2026. The Collinsworth and Tirico estimates date to 2024; Olsen’s is also a 2024 estimate tied to a change in his Fox role. The final entries therefore indicate reported benchmarks, not a definitive ordering of every NFL broadcaster.

Broad sports-media salary lists can blur the distinction between calling NFL games and appearing in sports programming. Stephen A. Smith has an NFL programming role, but the reported $40 million figure combines ESPN, SiriusXM and other work; the Associated Press reported his ESPN extension as at least $100 million over five years in 2025. He is not a dedicated NFL game announcer. Charles Barkley is an NBA studio analyst, and Pat McAfee is a cross-sport personality, so neither belongs in this ranking of NFL game callers.
