China was the world’s largest national new-vehicle market in 2025, with 34,399,621 vehicles sold—more than twice the United States’ 16,675,488. The ranking below uses annual motor vehicle sales and registrations reported by the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA), and includes passenger and commercial vehicles.
How the ranking is measured
“Car market” here means the number of new motor vehicles sold and registered in each country during calendar year 2025. These are unit totals, not sales revenue, production, exports, used-car transactions, or vehicles per person. Because the count includes commercial vehicles as well as passenger vehicles, it is broader than a passenger-car-only ranking.
The country order and figures come from OICA’s 2025 country sales table. OICA reported 99,798,406 motor vehicle sales and registrations worldwide in 2025, up 4.7% from 2024, in its April 23, 2026 overview.

What the numbers show
China leads by a wide margin
China’s 2025 total was about 2.06 times the U.S. figure, the second-largest in the ranking. No other country in the top ten was close to China’s volume.
The United States is second, with India and Japan next
The United States recorded 16,675,488 vehicles, followed by India at 5,517,594 and Japan at 4,565,777. The gap between the United States and India is substantial, while India and Japan form the next pair in the ranking.

Europe and the Americas are regional totals, not country rankings
OICA reported 18,630,198 sales in Europe and 24,864,617 in the Americas in 2025. Its Asia/Oceania/Middle East category recorded 55,018,183, while Africa recorded 1,285,408. These are OICA’s regional groupings: in particular, Asia/Oceania/Middle East should not be read as a figure for Asia alone. Regional totals describe a different level of aggregation from the country list.

A larger unit market means more new vehicles were sold and registered in that country during the year. It does not, by itself, show that residents own more vehicles per person, spend more on vehicles, or that the country produces or exports more vehicles. Nor does this ranking identify electric-vehicle share or explain why one market is larger than another.
