The 10 Best Ways to Rank Higher on Google Maps

Google Maps visibility depends on relevance, distance, and prominence. Use these ten practical steps to improve the signals you can control and measure local results more honestly.

To improve unpaid visibility in Google Maps, make your business a strong match for the search, establish its real-world prominence, and understand the limits of its location. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and prominence; it does not publish a fixed checklist of ranking factors, and businesses cannot pay for a better organic local position. Google’s local ranking guidance explains the framework.

The ten actions below focus on eligible profiles, accurate information, relevant categories and services, genuine reputation, and measurement. Some improvements primarily help Google understand the business; others chiefly help customers choose it. Neither a profile edit nor a tool can guarantee a particular position.

What does ranking higher on Google Maps mean?

Google Maps results, the three-business local pack shown in many Google Search results, and the Local Finder reached through “More places” are related local results, but they are not the same as ordinary organic website rankings. A business can appear prominently for its own name yet have little visibility for a general search such as “plumber near me” or “emergency plumber in Austin.”

Results vary with the query, the searcher’s location, the business category, the competitors nearby, and other context. Google describes its broad local framework as relevance (how well a business matches the search), distance (how close it is to the searcher or an inferred location), and prominence (how well-known or established it appears). It does not publish exact weights for these factors.

Distance is a real constraint, not a profile setting. A business may rank well near its address and poorly several miles away; adding a city name to its profile does not move it closer to searchers. The practical goal is to improve the factors the business can influence while targeting areas and queries where it can plausibly compete.

1. Claim, verify, and secure the eligible Business Profile

A verified Google Business Profile lets an eligible business manage key information shown on Google Search and Maps. Start by checking whether a listing already exists, then claim that listing rather than creating a duplicate. Google’s guidance on establishing business details also recommends claiming the profile and providing clear information about the business and its official website.

  • Complete the verification method Google offers for the account and business. Methods can vary by business, account, and region.
  • Keep primary ownership with the business. Give an agency or other outside partner manager access instead of transferring ownership to it.
  • Maintain recovery details and access for more than one trusted business representative.
  • Check for duplicates before adding another profile, and do not make separate profiles for individual services or service areas.

If verification fails or a profile is suspended, check the business details against its real-world identity, look for duplicates, and follow the verification or appeal process Google provides. Gather legitimate evidence of operation, such as signage, licensing, or branded vehicles where relevant. Do not try to bypass verification by creating another listing.

2. Make the profile accurate and complete

Accurate information helps Google assess whether a profile matches a search and helps customers decide whether to contact the business. Google specifically points to details such as address, hours, category, and attributes in its local ranking guidance.

  • Use the business’s real-world name, public phone number, and official website.
  • Enter the genuine customer-facing address when the business serves customers there, and place the map pin correctly.
  • Keep regular hours and special or holiday hours current.
  • Write a clear, factual description and maintain applicable appointment, booking, ordering, or menu links.
  • Select only legitimate attributes, such as accessibility or payment options, and update them when circumstances change.

The profile should reflect how customers actually encounter the business. Avoid keyword-stuffed names, invented suite numbers, misleading hours, and tracking phone numbers as the only public contact number. Inaccurate details can undermine trust and lead to missed calls or visits even when the listing is visible.

3. Choose the most accurate primary category

The primary category is an important relevance signal because it describes what the business fundamentally does. Choose the closest available category for the main business offering or customer intent, not simply the category that appears to have the most search demand.

  1. Identify the business’s principal offering and the searches customers use when seeking it.
  2. Review the available Google categories and select the closest accurate match.
  3. Add secondary categories only for substantial, real offerings.
  4. Reassess the selection after a meaningful change in the business, not in response to every short-term ranking fluctuation.

Google’s guidance covers business type and category as part of helping it understand a business. The Whitespark local search ranking factors study also identifies primary category as an important local-pack signal. That study reflects practitioner opinion and industry analysis, not a disclosure of Google’s algorithm or its exact weighting. Do not copy competitors’ irrelevant categories or create extra profiles to target additional categories.

4. Describe the services and products the business really offers

Use the profile’s available services or product features to make the offering clear to searchers. Add important services with concise, accurate names and descriptions. Eligible retailers can include products; use accurate prices and booking or ordering links where those details are useful and can be maintained.

These details can reinforce relevance and improve a customer’s ability to decide whether the business meets their needs. That does not mean every field has a confirmed direct ranking effect. BrightLocal’s coverage of its 2026 local ranking-factor survey distinguishes factors practitioners believe affect rankings from features that may mainly support conversion. Do not treat profile-description keywords, frequent posts, or keywords in review replies as guaranteed ranking levers.

5. Earn genuine reviews and respond constructively

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking, and that helpful replies can help a business stand out. Reviews also give prospective customers evidence of other people’s experiences. Google does not publish a review-count threshold or formula that guarantees a position.

Build a consistent, fair request process

  • Ask eligible customers for an honest review after a completed purchase or service, using a direct review link or QR code if useful.
  • Make the request consistently rather than asking only customers expected to be happy.
  • Invite customers to describe their actual experience; do not script their opinions.
  • Respond to positive and negative feedback in a professional, specific way. Move sensitive case details to a private channel.

Avoid manipulation

Do not buy reviews, offer incentives for positive reviews, write reviews for customers, solicit reviews from employees or related parties, or use review gating to divert dissatisfied customers away from public reviews. Avoid repetitive, copied replies.

Monitor rating, recent review activity, recurring themes, and response practices alongside business outcomes. Review velocity and review text are discussed in practitioner research, but Google does not disclose their exact ranking weights; the Whitespark study should be read as industry evidence rather than an official Google formula.

6. Make the website reinforce the profile

The website and Business Profile should describe the same real business and make its location, services, and contact details easy to understand. Google Search Central recommends providing explicit business information and supports LocalBusiness structured data for details such as hours and contact information. See its business details guidance and LocalBusiness structured data documentation.

For one location

  • Provide a crawlable page with the business’s real name, address, phone, hours, and services.
  • Explain the services in useful language, with clear contact, booking, and directions information.
  • Keep the page mobile-friendly, secure, and internally linked to relevant service information.
  • Use structured data where appropriate and ensure it matches visible, accurate page content.

For multiple locations

Give each genuine location its own profile and useful location page, with its actual address, phone, hours, local details, and evidence relevant to that branch. Avoid pages that merely replace one city name with another. For a service-area business, describe actual coverage and services without inventing a staffed location in each city.

Structured data helps search engines understand website information; it is not a guarantee of a higher Maps position. Likewise, organic website visibility and Maps visibility overlap in some ways but are not interchangeable ranking systems.

7. Build prominence through real local authority

Google describes prominence in terms of how well-known a business is and notes that information such as links from other websites and review volume can contribute. Pursue recognition that reflects real relationships and expertise rather than trying to manufacture a large number of low-value mentions.

  • Earn links or listings from a local chamber, trade association, licensing body, supplier, or professional organization when the business genuinely qualifies.
  • Support community projects, sponsorships, and partnerships that have a real local connection.
  • Offer useful resources, expertise, or original local information that can merit coverage from local news or organizations.
  • Correct important business details in major, relevant industry and local directories.

Business citations—mentions containing details such as name, address, phone, website, or category—are most useful when they are accurate and relevant. Prioritize important platforms and legitimate niche or regional directories rather than bulk-submitting to hundreds of low-quality sites. A citation campaign is not a one-time cure for weak rankings.

8. Set the address and service area honestly

Location configuration depends on how customers receive the service. Use the real address where customers can visit during stated hours. A business that serves customers at their locations rather than at its own premises should follow Google’s service-area profile requirements and hide its address when customers do not visit it. Use only areas the business actually serves.

Business type What to configure Risk to avoid
Customer-facing storefront Genuine address, accurately placed pin, correct hours, and consistent location details. Virtual or misleading addresses, duplicates, or an address customers cannot visit.
Service-area business Actual service coverage; hide the address if customers are not served there. Fake offices or a separate profile for each city served.
Hybrid business Show a location only if customers are genuinely served there, and define actual service coverage. Conflicting address and coverage information.
Multi-location business Separate profiles and useful pages for genuine operating locations. Duplicate listings or thin pages that imply locations that do not exist.

A business cannot edit its way physically closer to every searcher. If proximity is the limiting factor, focus on realistic nearby demand, improve relevance and prominence, or consider a genuine additional location if the business can operate one. Fake addresses and overstated coverage risk customer confusion and profile problems.

9. Add current photos and practical conversion information

Google recommends photos and videos to show customers what a business offers. Use real, current visuals that answer practical questions: exterior signage and entrance, interior and accessibility details, staff, products, completed work, equipment, or the service environment. Get permission for identifiable people and remove images that no longer represent the business.

Photos, useful attributes, accurate hours, menus, products, and booking links can help customers choose and act. Evidence that uploading more photos directly raises organic Maps rankings is limited; BrightLocal’s 2026 survey coverage distinguishes conversion value from perceived direct ranking effects. Do not rely on a promised weekly photo quota or location metadata as a ranking shortcut.

10. Measure visibility across the service area and diagnose the cause

A manual search from the business owner’s desk shows only one query and one search context. Establish a baseline for important queries and check visibility from multiple points around the market. A geographic grid can reveal where the business appears, where competitors dominate, and whether visibility declines with distance.

Track distinct searches and outcomes

  • Separate branded searches from category, service, “near me,” neighborhood, and city searches.
  • Record grid visibility and query wording before making major profile or website changes.
  • Track calls, website visits, direction requests, bookings, quote requests, and qualified leads alongside position.
  • Keep a dated change log so any movement can be compared with actual edits.

Use symptoms to choose what to investigate

Observed symptom First areas to investigate
Not visible for the business’s own name Verification, suspension, duplicate listings, or incorrect business details.
Visible for its name but not its main category Primary category, services, website relevance, and prominence.
Strong near the address, weak farther away Distance and the realistic coverage of the business.
Visible for one service but not another Category fit, service details, and the relevance of the related website page.
Visibility with few calls or bookings Hours, reviews, photos, offer clarity, trust, and the destination page.
Sudden disappearance Suspension, duplicate or guideline issues, or major conflicting business data.

Rank-tracking products can help visualize geographic variation, but they diagnose rather than improve the underlying business signals. BrightLocal lists local rank tracking and related tools on its pricing page; Semrush describes its location-based tools on its Local pricing page. A spreadsheet and consistent manual checks may be enough for a single location. Choose a paid tracker only if the additional coverage or reporting is useful.

A practical first-month implementation order

  1. Days 1–3: Confirm ownership and verification status, check eligibility and duplicates, and correct the core business details and primary category.
  2. Days 4–7: Complete relevant services, products, attributes, links, map pin, and representative photos; establish a fair review-request process.
  3. Weeks 2–3: Audit the website and location pages, correct significant directory inconsistencies, and identify legitimate local authority opportunities.
  4. Week 4 onward: Maintain review responses and current information, compare grid visibility with the baseline, and assess calls and qualified leads before deciding what to change next.

Change one meaningful group of signals at a time and record the date. Random weekly edits make it harder to tell whether a change helped, while position alone does not show whether the business gained useful customers.
