Buying pet medication online can lower the total cost, but the cheapest listing is not automatically the best deal. Compare the complete delivered price for the exact drug, strength, dosage form, quantity, and shipping method, and allow time for veterinarian approval. Prescription products require a valid prescription or other order from a licensed veterinarian, which reputable pharmacies verify before shipping.

The retailers below serve different needs: routine refills, human-generic price checks, compounded medications, local pharmacy pickup, and recurring delivery. For urgent treatment, contact your veterinarian or an emergency clinic rather than waiting for online approval and shipping.

Quick comparison

Pharmacy or service Best for Notable delivery or prescription detail
Chewy Pharmacy Overall convenience Vet approval may take up to 3 business days; delivery generally takes 3–5 business days after approval
PetMeds Established pet-pharmacy service Prescription orders wait for veterinarian approval; standard delivery is listed as 2–5 business days after processing
PetCareRx Pet supplies and medications in one order Holds an order for 7 days while waiting for authorization; delivery generally takes 3–7 business days after approval
Walmart Pet Pharmacy Walmart shoppers and refill management Verification can take up to 5 business days
Costco Pharmacy Comparing human-generic prices Prescription can be brought to a local Costco; same-day delivery is available only in eligible areas
Petco Pharmacy Petco customers and Autoship Petco advises allowing 5–10 days for verification, processing, and delivery
Allivet Autoship discounts and compounding Standard shipping is listed as 1–3 business days in many cases; discounts and exclusions apply
VetRxDirect Chronic medications and veterinarian involvement Prescription must be faxed directly by the veterinary clinic; does not ship prescription items to Alaska
GoodRx for Pets Price comparison, local pharmacy savings, and selected home delivery Prescription home-delivery orders generally ship 24–72 business hours after approval
Wedgewood Pharmacy Compounded and easier-to-administer forms Preparation time varies; standard transit is generally 3–5 business days after processing

The 10 best places to buy pet medication online

1. Chewy Pharmacy — Best overall for convenience

Chewy is a practical choice when you want prescriptions, veterinary diets, over-the-counter products, and compounded medications in one account. Its pharmacy is accredited by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and certified by LegitScript.

To order, search for the medication, add it to the cart, and enter the pet’s information and veterinarian details at checkout. You can select “Chewy Contacts Vet” or mail a prescription. Chewy does not accept prescription-drug photographs or photocopies; a mailed prescription must be the original document.

Chewy says veterinarian approval can take up to 3 business days. Once it receives a valid prescription, pharmacy processing generally takes 24–48 hours, followed by delivery in about 3–5 business days. That makes it convenient for routine refills, but not a good option for medication needed immediately.

One unusual edge case is gabapentin: Chewy says prescriptions for it must be mailed to a separate pharmacy address in Pittston, Pennsylvania. Prescription drugs generally cannot be returned, although an incorrect or damaged shipment may qualify for a refund or replacement.

2. PetMeds — Best-established dedicated pet pharmacy

PetMeds focuses on medication and health products for dogs, cats, and other animals. It operates online at PetMeds.com and by telephone through the 1-800-PetMeds brand. PetMeds and PetCareRx are under common ownership, and the company says orders may be processed or filled at pharmacies in Delray Beach, Florida, or Lynbrook, New York.

Add the prescription product to your cart, enter the pet and veterinarian information, and allow the pharmacy to contact the clinic. The order cannot ship until approval arrives, so an apparently low product price should be compared with the cost of any emergency supply you may need while waiting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The company says its pharmacies are licensed in every state where they ship medication. The current PetMeds-powered pharmacy information lists standard delivery as 2–5 business days after processing.

3. PetCareRx — Best for a broad pharmacy and pet-supply selection

PetCareRx combines prescription and nonprescription medications with supplements, food, and general pet supplies. It says it is licensed in all 50 states, uses licensed pharmacists, dispenses FDA- and EPA-approved medications, and is a verified .pharmacy site.

During checkout, choose the option for PetCareRx to contact your veterinarian, or mail the original signed prescription. PetCareRx holds an order for 7 days while waiting for authorization. After approval, delivery is generally listed as 3–7 business days.

Pay close attention to the exact product. A similarly named medication may have a different strength, formulation, quantity, or species designation. A lower price on a different dosage form is not a meaningful saving if your veterinarian prescribed something else.

4. Walmart Pet Pharmacy — Best for Walmart shoppers and prescription management

Walmart can be useful if you already manage household purchases through Walmart.com and want pet prescriptions alongside them. The service supports pet medications and veterinary diet food with veterinarian approval.

To browse, go to Services → Pharmacy → Pet Pharmacy. You can also use Account → Pets → Pet Pharmacy. Add the item, enter the pet and veterinarian details, and submit the order. Walmart contacts the veterinary clinic for verification.

Verification can take up to 5 business days. If a veterinarian does not respond within 2 business days, Walmart says it contacts the clinic again. Walmart may change the item, strength, dosage, or weight range if the veterinarian changes the prescription. A price increase of 10% or less, when the product itself has not changed, may be automatically approved. A larger increase or a changed product requires customer approval; declining or missing the response deadline cancels the order.

For an existing refill, use My Account → Pets → Prescriptions → Refill now. If there are no refills remaining, choose Reorder Now to begin a new veterinarian-approval request.

5. Costco Pharmacy — Best for comparing pet prescriptions with human-pharmacy prices

Costco is especially worth checking when your veterinarian says a pet prescription can be filled with an appropriate human generic. The veterinarian—not Costco—must determine whether the human medication, dose, and formulation are suitable for your animal.

Costco’s pharmacy site directs customers to Costco.com/pet-medications for prices, and prescriptions can be brought to a local Costco pharmacy. Prescription delivery is also available through Costco’s pharmacy services. Same-day Instacart delivery depends on the local warehouse, medication, and delivery address.

This is not primarily a pet-specific online pharmacy. Veterinary-only products, compounded formulations, flavored medications, and some animal-specific preventives may not be available. Also remember to account for membership costs, delivery charges, and the price of a local prescription before deciding that Costco is cheaper.

6. Petco Pharmacy — Best for Petco customers and Autoship

Petco’s online pharmacy fulfills prescriptions through Vetsource and offers products such as flea and tick treatments, dewormers, allergy medications, and pain medications. It is a sensible choice if you already use Petco’s account, loyalty, or recurring-delivery features.

  1. Sign in and open My Prescriptions under My Profile.
  2. If the prescription is not linked, find the medication at Petco Pharmacy and add it to the cart.
  3. Enter the pet’s information and veterinarian contact details during checkout. Vetsource then contacts the veterinarian.

Petco advises allowing 5–10 days for verification, processing, and delivery. A paper prescription must be the original; photographs and scanned copies are not accepted. Place the order first and include its order number with the mailed prescription.

Once a prescription is on file, refills are managed through My Pet Prescriptions. Petco says prescription products cannot be returned in-store or by mail, so contact customer care if the order is incorrect or arrives damaged. Its first qualifying prescription Autoship order receives a 35% discount, capped at $20, subject to exclusions.

7. Allivet — Best for Autoship discounts and compounding

Allivet sells prescription and over-the-counter products for dogs, cats, horses, and other animals. It lists state pharmacy licenses and says it can ship prescription medication to all 50 states subject to applicable rules.

Add the medication to the cart and enter the pet and veterinarian information. Allivet can contact the clinic, or the veterinarian can call, email, or fax the prescription. An existing prescription can also be mailed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allivet lists free standard shipping on prescription Autoship orders over $30 and on qualifying regular prescription or over-the-counter orders over $49. Standard shipping is listed as 1–3 business days, excluding cold-ship products and certain destinations. The company advertises up to 40% off a first AutoShip order and 5% off future shipments, but product and promotional terms apply.

Allivet also offers compounded medications through Wedgewood Connect. Look for the red “Rx” label and have the veterinarian submit a valid prescription. Compounding can solve administration problems, but it should not be treated as an interchangeable bargain version of an FDA-approved product.

8. VetRxDirect — Best for chronic medications and veterinarian-centered service

VetRxDirect focuses on veterinary medications, supplements, and compounded products, including commonly used heart, thyroid, eye, allergy, pain, and behavioral medications. It says it is verified by the NABP and licensed to distribute prescription products in every U.S. state except Alaska.

After placing an order online or by phone, print the pharmacy’s authorization form and give it to the veterinarian. VetRxDirect says prescriptions must be faxed directly from a veterinary clinic or hospital; it does not accept a fax sent by the pet owner.

Ezy Dose Pets Weekly 7-Day Pill Organizer for Dogs, Blue, Large
  • Provides daily reminder for medication
  • Helps prevent "multiple" doses by other family members
  • Allows easy differentiation from pet verses human medication
  • Allergen Information: Gluten Free

This process can suit chronic medication users whose clinic is accustomed to handling prescription requests. Check the current shipping threshold on the product page or at checkout because the displayed free-shipping requirements have changed over time. Prescription items cannot currently be shipped to Alaska.

9. GoodRx for Pets — Best for comparing prices and human-pharmacy alternatives

GoodRx is a price-comparison and coupon service, not itself a pharmacy and not the party that fills prescriptions. It lists prices and savings from participating pharmacies. GoodRx for Pets supports local-pharmacy savings for many human medications prescribed for pets, and home delivery for selected pet-specific and human medications through its integrated pet-pharmacy service.

For home delivery, search for the medication on GoodRx.com, select the GoodRx for Pets option in the Home Delivery section, confirm the supply and quantity, add it to the cart, and sign in or create a GoodRx for Pets account. Enter shipping, payment, and veterinarian information.

GoodRx says over-the-counter products generally ship within 24 business hours. Prescription products generally ship within 24–72 business hours after veterinarian approval, with delivery typically taking another 3–5 business days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A GoodRx coupon does not apply to every veterinary medication. Traditional GoodRx coupons generally apply to human medications prescribed for a pet, not animal-only medications that are not FDA-approved for human use. Confirm the exact product before relying on a displayed coupon price.

10. Wedgewood Pharmacy — Best for compounded and hard-to-administer medications

Wedgewood specializes in compounded veterinary medication and animal-friendly forms such as flavored chewables, small tablets, oral liquids, and transdermal preparations. It reports more than 46,000 medication options for companion animals, horses, and other species.

Owners can use Wedgewood.pet to manage an animal’s prescription. The veterinarian must submit a valid prescription before Wedgewood prepares the medication. Processing time depends on the formulation and appears in the Wedgewood.pet account. Standard transit is generally 3–5 business days after processing; one- or two-business-day shipping upgrades shorten transit, not preparation time.

If a product is marked “Temporarily Unavailable,” Wedgewood says an order may still be placed by phone, but shipping waits for replenishment.

There is an important safety and regulatory distinction here: compounded veterinary medications are not the same as FDA-approved finished animal drug products. The FDA says animal drugs compounded from bulk drug substances do not undergo FDA review for safety and effectiveness for their intended uses. The veterinarian should decide whether compounding is appropriate.

How to compare the real cost

Use the delivered, usable cost rather than the product-page price. For a recurring prescription, calculate:

total cost = medication price + shipping + cold-pack fee + membership cost allocated to the order − valid discount

  1. Match the prescription exactly. Compare the same active ingredient, strength, dosage form, quantity, species, and weight range.
  2. Check approval and delivery time. A lower price is not useful if your pet will run out before the order arrives.
  3. Look for recurring-order terms. Autoship discounts may apply only to the first order, may be capped, or may exclude certain products.
  4. Compare a human generic only with veterinary approval. Costco or a local pharmacy may be less expensive, but never substitute a human medication independently.
  5. Include shipping conditions. Refrigerated or otherwise temperature-sensitive products may have different shipping charges and delivery restrictions.
  6. Ask about refills. A pharmacy may need a new authorization when refills run out, creating another wait and possibly another vet-contact charge.

Safety checks before ordering anywhere

  • Use a pharmacy that requires veterinarian authorization for prescription products.
  • Check for a physical U.S. address, telephone number, licensed pharmacists, and state pharmacy-license information; look for relevant pharmacy credentials such as NABP accreditation where applicable.
  • Be suspicious of prices that are dramatically below established comparisons. Counterfeit, expired, improperly stored, or unapproved products are real risks.
  • When the package arrives, check the label, pet’s name, medication, strength, expiration date, seal, and storage condition.
  • Do not give a human medication to a pet without specific instructions from the veterinarian.
  • Do not wait for online approval and shipping for urgent treatment. Ask the veterinarian or an emergency clinic about immediate dispensing.
  • Expect limited return options. Pharmacies generally cannot safely restock prescription medication after it leaves their control.

How to avoid a delayed prescription order

  1. Ask the veterinary office whether it prefers a phone call, fax, electronic request, or mailed prescription.
  2. Give the pharmacy the clinic’s current telephone and fax details, including the veterinarian’s name.
  3. Confirm that the clinic has approved the exact quantity and number of refills.
  4. Check the order status after the pharmacy’s stated approval window. Call the clinic if the request is waiting on its response.
  5. Order the next refill early enough to allow for weekends, holidays, processing, and transit.

FAQ

Do online pet pharmacies require a prescription?

Prescription medications require a valid prescription or other order from a licensed veterinarian. Reputable pharmacies verify the order before shipping. Over-the-counter products do not require a prescription, but they can still be inappropriate for a particular pet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it cheaper to buy pet medication from Costco or a local pharmacy?

Sometimes. Ask the veterinarian whether an appropriate human generic can be used, then compare the local or Costco cash price with dedicated pet-pharmacy prices. The veterinarian must approve the medication, dose, and formulation; do not make the substitution yourself.

How long does an online pet prescription take to arrive?

It varies by pharmacy and by how quickly the veterinarian responds. Some services quote approval periods of up to 3–5 business days, followed by several days of processing and delivery. Compounded and cold-ship products can take longer.

Can I return prescription pet medication?

Usually not. Pharmacies generally cannot safely restock prescription drugs after they leave the pharmacy. If the order is incorrect, damaged, or defective, contact the retailer promptly and keep the packaging and label.

The Bottom Line

For most routine refills, Chewy, PetMeds, PetCareRx, Walmart, and Petco offer convenient ordering workflows. Costco and GoodRx are useful price checks when a veterinarian approves a human generic; GoodRx also supports home delivery for selected medicines. Allivet and Wedgewood are stronger choices for compounding or easier-to-administer forms, while VetRxDirect emphasizes chronic prescriptions and direct veterinarian authorization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whichever service you choose, compare the complete delivered cost and order early. The safest online pharmacy is one that verifies the prescription, clearly identifies the product, and gives you enough time to resolve an approval or shipping problem before your pet misses a dose.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
