But that reveal did not mean a driverless Tesla was ready for general purchase or that a nationwide robotaxi network had arrived. As of August 18, 2026, Tesla advertises rides in six Florida and Texas markets, while its consumer Full Self-Driving product still requires driver supervision.
What the 2024 report said
On August 30, 2024, Gizmodo relayed Bloomberg reporting that Tesla planned to unveil its robotaxi at the Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank, California, on October 10. The report followed an earlier event date—August 8, announced by Elon Musk—that had been postponed. It cited unnamed people familiar with the plans and said the delay was reportedly intended to allow more time to prepare prototypes and demonstrations; Tesla had not officially confirmed that explanation in the coverage. Read the original report.
What Tesla showed at the event
The October 10 event, branded “We, Robot,” took place at the Warner Bros. lot. Tesla presented the Cybercab, a proposed purpose-built autonomous vehicle shown without a steering wheel or pedals. Reporting on the event described Tesla’s targets of a price below $30,000 and availability in 2026, before 2027. Those were company projections, not evidence of a confirmed retail price, production start, delivery date, or current availability. Event coverage and the announced targets.
What a reveal did—and did not—prove
A product presentation can establish what a company intends to build; it cannot by itself establish commercial readiness. A studio-lot demonstration is not the same as showing reliable operation on ordinary public roads across traffic, weather, construction, emergencies, and other unpredictable conditions.

The 2024 event did not, on its own, establish that Cybercab was ready for mass production, approved for unrestricted use, available to buy, or capable of supporting a nationwide or global driverless fleet. Nor did it settle practical questions such as liability, insurance, remote assistance, charging, cleaning, maintenance, accessibility, evacuation, and passenger safety at scale. Those require separate evidence about the vehicle, service, operating areas, and applicable approvals.
Cybercab, Robotaxi, and FSD (Supervised) are different
| Offering | What it means | What the cited Tesla pages establish |
|---|---|---|
| Cybercab | A proposed purpose-built vehicle for autonomous transportation. | Tesla describes it as a future vehicle; the cited page does not present it as generally orderable. |
| Robotaxi | A ride service advertised by Tesla in selected markets. | Tesla directs riders to its Robotaxi app. The landing page alone does not establish exact service boundaries, fares, wait times, fleet size, or safety-driver status in each market. |
| FSD (Supervised) | Driver-assistance software for eligible Tesla vehicles. | Tesla says it requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous. Its listed functions include route following, lane changes, turns, and navigating around vehicles and objects. |
Tesla’s current support page calls the consumer product Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and says the driver must remain attentive and responsible. The word “robotaxi” on a service page should not be treated as proof that a privately owned Tesla using FSD can drive without supervision. Tesla’s FSD terms and details.

Where Tesla advertises Robotaxi rides now
As of August 18, 2026, Tesla’s Robotaxi page lists rides in Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, Florida, and Austin, Dallas, and Houston, Texas. It directs people to the Robotaxi app for rides and updates. This is a limited-market service claim, not evidence of general availability across the United States. The page describes Cybercab as a future addition to the service, which is distinct from saying the vehicle is currently available for consumer purchase. Tesla Robotaxi.
Tesla’s January 2026 regulatory filing discussed planned or developing coverage in additional places, including the San Francisco Bay Area, Phoenix, and Las Vegas, alongside several Texas and Florida markets. The filing is a company-reported status snapshot with differing operating statuses, including locations requiring active driver supervision; it should not be read as independent confirmation that every listed market had an active, unrestricted driverless service. What a reader can actually do
Subscribe to FSD (Supervised)
Tesla lists a U.S. subscription price of $99 per month on its support page, subject to change. Eligibility and availability depend on vehicle configuration, hardware, software, model, trim, model year, region, development, and regulatory approval. To subscribe, Tesla lists the path as Tesla app: Upgrades → Software Upgrades → Subscribe, or vehicle touchscreen: Controls → Upgrades. This buys supervised driver assistance, not a driverless ride or Cybercab.
Request a Robotaxi ride
In markets Tesla lists, the company directs prospective riders to its Robotaxi app. Tesla says the app displays a price estimate before a ride is confirmed, but the general service page does not provide a universal fare. Availability for a particular trip should be checked in the app rather than inferred from a city name on the landing page. Tesla Robotaxi support.

Book a vehicle demonstration
Tesla offers a demo-drive booking flow, subject to location and eligibility. A demo drive is not an unsupervised Robotaxi demonstration; Tesla’s FSD language still requires active driver supervision. Tesla demo drives.
Check trial details separately
Tesla advertises an FSD v14 trial for eligible owners with software version 14.2 or later in the United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Canada. Trial eligibility and terms are separate from Robotaxi access. Tesla’s v14 trial terms.
Questions that still determine whether the promise scales
For a reader judging whether Tesla’s robotaxi plans have become a dependable transportation option, the meaningful evidence is operational rather than theatrical:
- Autonomy in practice: Is a ride unsupervised, supervised by an onboard driver, or supported remotely? The term “autonomous” can describe different operating conditions.
- Geography and permissions: Which exact roads and service areas are covered, and what approvals apply in each jurisdiction?
- Responsibility and recourse: Who handles crashes, passenger injuries, property damage, and roadside failures? What insurance and liability arrangements apply?
- Exceptional situations: How does the system get help with blocked roads, emergencies, or other unusual events, and how is remote assistance provided?
- Real-world performance: What independent evidence exists on trip completion, interventions, incidents, and operation outside favorable or managed conditions?
- Production and economics: Is Cybercab in production, what is its confirmed retail or operating cost, and can the service scale beyond a small number of markets?
Tesla’s own support page also says FSD availability varies with configuration, software, region, and regulatory approval. Company pages are useful for determining what Tesla offers or claims; they are not, by themselves, independent verification of safety performance or regulatory status.
