It offers benefits for qualifying purchases and demo drives, but Tesla’s current terms do not state a reward amount or promise that a free car is available. The page lists vehicle sweepstakes from 2023 and 2024 as past drawings, not as a current promotion. The terms are effective August 24, 2024, and Tesla says the page was updated February 24, 2026. Check Tesla’s current U.S. terms and the offer shown in your Tesla app before acting; availability and benefits may vary by location and change over time.
What Tesla’s referral program currently offers
Tesla describes three ways to participate: a first-time qualifying buyer can use a referral link, an eligible owner can refer a friend who purchases or completes a demo drive, and an existing owner can earn loyalty benefits on another qualifying purchase through the same Tesla Account. The current U.S. terms do not give a specific benefit value, so there is no verified current reward amount to compare.
| Pathway | Who it is for | Qualifying action |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer benefit | Someone who has never owned a qualifying Tesla product | Use a friend’s referral link before placing an eligible order; the benefit is for the buyer’s first qualifying purchase. |
| Referrer benefit | An eligible Tesla owner sharing a link through the Tesla app | A friend places a qualifying order or completes a first demo drive through the link. |
| Loyalty benefit | An existing qualifying owner | Buy another qualifying product using the same Tesla Account. |
The table describes the program’s pathways, not guaranteed payments: eligibility, product, region, account status, limits, and applicable terms determine whether a benefit is granted.
How to use a referral link for a purchase
- Get a valid link from an eligible owner. Referrers access “Refer and Earn” in the Tesla app and share their referral link.
- Open the link before ordering. The referral must be associated with the order before it is placed; Tesla says a link cannot be added afterward.
- Place an eligible order through the referral link. The buyer must be new to qualifying Tesla products. Tesla says a custom order or new inventory vehicle can qualify; Certified Pre-Owned vehicles do not.
- Check the benefit status in your account. For the referrer, Tesla says a benefit appears as pending after the friend places an order until the Grant Date. The current terms do not state a fixed grant timing or reward amount.
A referral link cannot be used by the same Tesla Account more than once. A buyer also receives no buyer benefit if the referrer has already reached the applicable referrer limit.

Which products and locations qualify
Tesla’s U.S. terms distinguish purchase-related benefits from demo-drive referrals. The listed qualifying products and exceptions are:
- Purchase-related benefits: Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, and Tesla-installed solar panels are listed for buyer and loyalty benefits and purchase-based referrer benefits.
- Demo-drive referrals: Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck are listed.
- Cybertruck exception: Cybertruck Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive is eligible for loyalty benefits only, not buyer or referrer benefits.
- Energy products: Qualifying solar and other energy products must be installed by Tesla.
- Excluded purchases: Certified Pre-Owned vehicles do not qualify.
Benefits also depend on location. Under the U.S. terms, Ohio and Virginia residents may qualify for buyer and loyalty benefits but not referrer benefits. Local law and Tesla’s applicable regional terms can affect eligibility elsewhere, so do not assume these U.S. rules apply internationally.

Referral limits, account eligibility, and restrictions
Tesla’s terms set limits by type of activity. These are program rules, not independent statistics:
- A buyer benefit is limited to the buyer’s first qualifying purchase.
- A referrer may receive benefits for up to 10 purchase referrals per calendar year.
- A referrer may receive benefits for up to 30 first demo-drive referrals over the account lifetime.
- An owner may receive up to 10 loyalty benefits over the account lifetime.
To receive benefits, a participant must have a qualifying product in their Tesla Account or be purchasing their first qualifying product through a valid referral link. If an owner transfers or removes all qualifying products, their link stops being valid for new referrals until they again take delivery of a qualifying vehicle or activate a qualifying energy product during the program.

Tesla prohibits paid advertising of referral links, selling links, and paying or offering incentives for someone to use a link. The terms allow Tesla to withhold benefits for policy violations or bad-faith behavior and say the program will not remain open indefinitely.
What Tesla Credits can be used for—and when they expire
Benefits issued as Tesla Credits are not cash, cannot be transferred, and cannot be reissued. Tesla lists eligible uses including Supercharging, new vehicle or energy purchases, some service balances, Tesla Shop purchases, Tesla Insurance payments, and upgrades such as subscriptions. Energy purchases must be installed by Tesla, and shop availability may depend on whether the Tesla Shop has launched in the region.

Credits cannot be used for Tesla gift cards, alcohol, or Extended Service Agreement subscriptions. Some uses have additional conditions: for example, Tesla says Supercharging or subscription balances may require payment entirely with credits rather than a mix of credits and another payment method. Credits can be selected as payment and combined with another method for eligible purchases where permitted.
Tesla says credits expire 12 months after the Grant Date. The Tesla app Wallet shows the expiration date, and Tesla says it emails a reminder 30 days before expiration.

Does the referral program currently offer a free car?
Tesla’s current U.S. “Refer and Earn” page does not say that a free car is presently available as a referral reward. It lists past vehicle-sweepstakes results: Cybertruck Foundation Series drawings dated May 14, 2024 and January 26, 2024; a Model Y Long Range drawing dated January 10, 2024; and a Model 3 Performance drawing dated October 5, 2023. Tesla says the winners were notified. Those historical drawings do not establish a current free-car offer.
If Tesla launches another vehicle promotion, its eligibility rules, entry method, dates, and geographic availability should be stated in that specific offer’s current terms. Until then, treat claims that the referral program is “back” with a free-car prize as unverified unless Tesla’s current regional offer page or app confirms them.
Where to verify the current offer
Use Tesla’s U.S. Refer and Earn support page and check the “Refer and Earn” section in the Tesla app for the terms attached to your account. The support page says the feature requires Tesla app version 4.36.1 or later, but app requirements can change; consult the current app listing if the feature is unavailable. Benefits are subject to change, and regional terms may differ.
