Tesla’s Sales Fell in 2025—but Deliveries Rose Through Q3 2026

Tesla’s 2025 sales decline is real, but its latest quarterly delivery totals rose through Q3 2026. Here’s how to distinguish deliveries, revenue and reported causes.

Tesla’s sales did fall over the full year in 2025, but the latest reported quarterly figures do not show them continuing to fall: deliveries increased in each of the first three quarters of 2026. The distinction matters because annual vehicle deliveries, quarterly deliveries and automotive revenue measure different things—and none alone tells the whole story about demand or financial health.

Are Tesla’s sales still falling?

Not quarter to quarter in the latest figures available on October 8, 2026. Tesla reported 358,023 vehicle deliveries in Q1 2026, 480,126 in Q2 and 486,532 in Q3. Those sequential increases do not establish that 2026 deliveries will exceed 2025’s full-year total, but they do mean that “continuing to fall” is not an accurate description of the reported quarterly direction.

Tesla’s Q3 release, published October 2, reported 486,532 deliveries: 478,237 Model 3/Y vehicles and 8,295 other models. Production was 464,391. Tesla says the production and delivery figures represent passenger vehicles sold to customers. The Q2 release reported 480,126 deliveries, comprising 467,762 Model 3/Y vehicles and 12,364 other models. Q2 2026 480,126 467,762 12,364
Q3 2026 486,532 478,237 8,295

The Q1 total is from Tesla’s Q1 2026 delivery release; the Q2 and Q3 breakdowns are from their respective Tesla releases. The quarterly totals are actual reported deliveries, not forecasts. Tesla cautions that deliveries and storage deployments are only two measures of financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results. Q3 earnings had not yet been announced as of October 8, 2026.

What fell in 2025: deliveries and automotive revenue

The longer-term decline is real. The Associated Press reported that Tesla delivered about 1.64 million vehicles in 2025, down about 9% from 2024. Separately, Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K said automotive sales revenue fell 9% compared with 2024. These are different measures: the first counts vehicles over a year, while the second measures revenue from automotive sales.

Tesla attributed the 2025 automotive revenue decline to approximately 8% fewer cash deliveries and lower average selling prices. The company said the lower average prices reflected sales mix and higher customer incentives, including financing options. That is Tesla’s explanation for its revenue result; it does not quantify the separate contribution of every factor to the unit-delivery decline. Why did Tesla sales fall in 2025?

Fewer deliveries and lower prices both weighed on automotive revenue

The company’s filing points to two direct components of its lower automotive sales revenue: fewer cash deliveries and lower average selling prices. A lower average price can reduce revenue even when a vehicle is delivered; incentives such as financing offers can also affect the realized economics of sales. The filing does not provide a percentage breakdown assigning the annual decline to each specific incentive or model mix change.

Factory changeover disrupted the delivery context

Tesla’s Q2 2025 Form 10-Q described the simultaneous factory changeover for the refreshed Model Y as part of the delivery context. The filing also discussed tariffs and policy incentives among business risks. This supports treating production transitions and policy conditions as relevant context, but it does not establish that the Model Y changeover explains the entire annual decline. News coverage cited tax-credit changes, competition and customer backlash

Reuters reported in a December 30, 2025 preview that the loss of U.S. tax credits and rising global competition were weighing on demand, while analysts expected a second consecutive annual delivery decline. That was reporting and a forecast before Tesla released the full-year result, not Tesla’s own quantified causal accounting. Reuters’ December 2025 preview.

After the results, the Associated Press also discussed expiring U.S. tax breaks, overseas competition and customer backlash linked to Elon Musk’s political activity as factors surrounding the decline. The sources cited here do not establish how much of the drop each factor caused. They are plausible reported explanations, not a measured allocation of responsibility.

How to read the next Tesla sales update

  • Compare like with like. Use deliveries against deliveries for the same period, preferably year over year as well as quarter to quarter. Sequential growth can coexist with a lower year-over-year total.
  • Keep revenue separate from volume. Automotive revenue can move differently from unit deliveries when average selling prices, incentives or sales mix change.
  • Watch the disclosed model groups. Tesla reports Model 3/Y separately from other models in its delivery releases, which can show whether changes are concentrated in its largest group or elsewhere.
  • Do not treat a forecast as a result. Tesla’s Q3 2026 release included a median analyst estimate of 463,406 deliveries, below the reported actual of 486,532. The estimate was a consensus forecast; Tesla says it does not endorse analysts’ conclusions. Tesla Q3 2026 delivery release.
  • Wait for financial results to assess financial health. Deliveries alone do not establish revenue, profitability, cash flow or underlying demand.
