Short answer: The latest figures do not show a Europe-wide Tesla collapse. Reuters reported that Tesla registrations rose year over year in six European markets in September, while registrations across the EU, Britain and EFTA were up 43.3% in January–August. Those figures are registrations—a sales proxy—not a complete count of September sales, deliveries, revenue or profit.
What Tesla’s latest European figures show
Reuters’ 1 October 2026 report found year-over-year increases in Tesla registrations in six selected markets for September. Separately, Tesla registrations across the EU, Britain and EFTA rose 43.3% from January through August, compared with 38.8% growth in the broader battery-electric vehicle (BEV) market over the same period and geography. The figures therefore point to a rebound in the reported measures, not to a complete account of Tesla’s European performance.
The time periods and geographies matter: the September figures cover six countries, whereas the 43.3% cumulative figure covers January–August across the EU, Britain and EFTA. Neither establishes Tesla’s total September registrations across Europe. Reuters reported the country figures and cumulative comparison, citing national data sources and ACEA.
September registration changes in six markets
| Market | Tesla registrations, year over year |
|---|---|
| Portugal | +128.3% |
| France | +61.9% |
| Sweden | +38.4% |
| Spain | +24.8% |
| Norway | +2.2% |
| Denmark | +2.9% |
These are country-level registration changes, not a combined European growth rate. The figures do not include every European market, and they should not be used to infer the missing full-region September total.

How the wider European car market is changing
The market backdrop is improving for electric cars, although the measurements below cover the EU only—not Britain or EFTA. ACEA reported that EU new-car registrations rose 5.3% year to date through August 2026. BEVs made up 21.7% of registrations, up from 15.8% a year earlier; hybrids accounted for 36.6%, while petrol and diesel together accounted for 29%.
ACEA’s figures describe the market’s powertrain mix, not Tesla’s share or sales. Its 24 September 2026 release said BEV registrations were stronger in France, Germany and Denmark, and that hybrids remained the largest powertrain category. See ACEA’s EU registration figures through August.

EAFO separately reported preliminary EU27 August BEV registrations of 182,548, or 31.0% of new registrations. That monthly figure is not directly comparable with ACEA’s complete year-to-date market-share figure: EAFO said 13 EU countries had data through August while the rest were updated through July. EAFO’s update explains the preliminary status and reporting cutoffs.
Why the rebound does not settle Tesla’s longer-term outlook
Reuters reported analysts’ explanations for the improvement that include easier comparisons with the prior year, higher fuel prices, government incentives and stronger consumer interest in EVs. Those are proposed contributors, not causes proven by the registration totals.

Competition and product range remain watch points
Reuters also reported that Tesla relies heavily on the Model 3 and Model Y and faces more competitively priced Chinese and European alternatives. Felipe Munoz, cited by Reuters, said non-Chinese brands had revealed 27 new BEV models in Europe through September, while Tesla had shown no new model during that period. That is context for future competition, not evidence by itself that Tesla’s registrations must fall.
Market maturity differs by country
Growth rates can vary sharply between countries and reflect different market conditions. Reuters quoted ING Research senior economist Rico Luman saying: “Battery-electric vehicle markets in both Norway and Denmark are beginning to slow because of high saturation.” The modest September increases reported in those two countries sit alongside much larger gains elsewhere in the six-market sample.

What these numbers can—and cannot—tell investors
Registrations are useful for tracking vehicles newly recorded in a market, but they are not interchangeable with company deliveries, orders, revenue or profitability. The reported figures establish neither Tesla’s complete September European registration total nor its European market share or profit. They also do not establish whether the rebound will persist.
- For a short-term read: the six reported September markets were all up year over year.
- For a regional comparison: January–August Tesla registrations grew faster than the broader BEV market across the EU, Britain and EFTA.
- For a full September verdict: the available figures here are incomplete; they do not provide the full EU, EFTA and UK total or all country details.
An earlier ACEA checkpoint showed EU new-car registrations up 4% through May 2026, with BEVs at 20% of the market. By August, ACEA’s year-to-date figures had moved to 5.3% growth for all new cars and a 21.7% BEV share. These are EU-wide market measures, not Tesla-specific results. ACEA published the May comparison on 23 June 2026.
