Tesla’s July 2024 announcement showed a validation Cybertruck built with the company’s in-house dry-cathode 4680 cells—not a confirmed customer rollout or a verified Cybertruck price cut. Tesla called it a cost-reduction milestone “once ramped,” so the savings were prospective, with no amount disclosed.
What Tesla announced in 2024
On Tesla’s Q2 2024 earnings call, Elon Musk said the company had built its first validation Cybertruck using dry-cathode cells made on mass-production equipment. Tesla’s Q2 2024 update deck described the work as “a major cost reduction milestone once ramped.” The statement established a prototype and a manufacturing milestone; it did not establish that production Cybertrucks were using those cells or that a cost reduction had already been realized. Notebookcheck’s July 2024 report, updated September 2024, covered the announcement and linked it to Tesla’s earnings materials.
What a dry-cathode 4680 battery is
“4680” refers to the cylindrical cell format. “Dry cathode” refers to how the cathode electrode is made, rather than to a different battery chemistry or a claim about the whole battery pack. In conventional wet coating, electrode material is applied using a solvent and then dried. Dry coating is intended to avoid solvent use and the energy-intensive drying stage. That can potentially reduce factory energy use, footprint, and manufacturing costs, but the cited announcement gave no measured savings per cell or Cybertruck.
| Manufacturing question | Wet-coated electrodes | Dry-coated electrodes |
|---|---|---|
| Solvent and drying | Uses solvent and requires an electrode-drying step. | Designed to avoid solvent use and the drying step. |
| Potential factory implications | Requires the energy and equipment associated with coating and drying. | Potentially lower process energy and factory footprint; Tesla described potential cost reduction once ramped. |
| Verified cost per cell or yield comparison | Not stated in the cited sources. | Not stated in the cited sources. |
| Scaling evidence in this story | No matched comparison provided. | A validation vehicle was reported in 2024; that alone does not demonstrate high-volume output. |
Did Cybertruck customers get the dry-cathode cells?
The cited 2024 announcement does not confirm customer deliveries with these cells. Tesla had said it was on track for a Q4 2024 production launch, but that was a forecast, not evidence in the cited material that the launch happened. Tesla’s Q4 2025 update, published January 28, 2026, says it produces dry-electrode 4680 cells with both anode and cathode made in Austin and has begun producing 4680 packs for certain Model Ys. It does not identify Cybertruck as an application. The available company statements therefore do not establish whether customer Cybertrucks subsequently received dry-cathode cells.

Why validation and production ramp are different
A vehicle made with cells from mass-production equipment is a meaningful engineering step, but it is not the same as a sustained, high-volume supply of cells meeting cost, yield, and quality targets. Tesla’s language tied the expected cost reduction to a future ramp, and its announcement did not publish a ramp rate, yield figure, or realized cost result.
That distinction matters in light of Reuters’ December 2023 reporting, which described challenges scaling dry-cathode coating. Reuters estimated Austin’s output at enough cells for about 24,000 Cybertrucks a year, based on its calculations using public data and unpublished figures from sources; this was not a Tesla-disclosed audited production rate and is not a current estimate. Reuters also quoted battery consultant Yuan Gao saying in 2023 that Tesla was the first to try to commercialize the process for large EV batteries at mass scale and high speed. That dated comment should not be read as a description of the industry today.

Do not confuse manufacturing savings with the tax credit
Tesla’s Q1 2025 update separately said it had launched an IRA-compliant 4680 cell, making the Cybertruck eligible for a $7,500 consumer tax credit. That was Tesla’s statement about eligibility at the time; it is distinct from the proposed manufacturing-cost benefit of dry cathodes. Tesla’s Q1 2025 update does not establish a dry-cathode cost saving for customer Cybertrucks. Tax-credit rules and individual buyer eligibility can change, so prospective buyers should check the applicable current rules.

Tesla’s Q4 2025 update lists 40 GWh of installed annual capacity for Texas 4680 production and cautions that installed capacity is not the same as current production. That figure is a facility capacity measure, not a disclosed production rate; it cannot by itself establish how many Cybertrucks could be supplied or whether Cybertruck packs use the dry-electrode cells. The same update identifies certain Model Ys, but not Cybertrucks, as receiving 4680 packs.
