What happened in the reported case?
Carscoops reported on October 16, 2023, that a Scottish couple’s Model Y worked on their way to dinner in Edinburgh during rainy weather but would not start afterward. The owners said Tesla attributed the problem to water ingress and gave them an estimate of £17,374, described in the report as roughly US$21,000. The dollar figure was a contemporaneous rounded conversion of the pound estimate, not a current exchange-rate calculation.
That account does not establish that rain alone caused the failure. The reporting attributes the diagnosis and estimate to the owners’ account of Tesla’s communication; it does not provide an independent engineering examination of the vehicle. The available sources also do not establish the couple’s final repair cost, insurance result, or vehicle disposition. Carscoops’ report.
Can driving a Tesla in heavy rain damage the battery?
This incident does not prove that ordinary rain caused battery damage. It is a report about one vehicle, with no independent technical findings that establish the failure mechanism. The sources available do not provide a directly applicable statistic for how often ordinary rain causes EV battery damage.

Water exposure is not the same as a verified diagnosis of rain-caused battery failure. Tesla’s 2020–2024 Model Y Europe Owner’s Manual says water-caused damage is not covered under warranty, but that wording does not determine what happened to this particular car or whether a particular warranty claim should have been accepted. Does Tesla’s battery warranty cover water damage?
Tesla’s 2020–2024 Model Y manual states: “Damage caused by water is not covered under warranty.” But warranty terms vary by model, variant, market, and vehicle contract. Tesla’s UK support page says the warranty provided with the vehicle is authoritative, so owners should check the terms issued for their specific car rather than apply a headline or a general coverage limit to every Model Y. For current coverage information listed on Tesla’s UK support page, Model Y RWD battery and drive-unit coverage is 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first; listed premium and performance variants have 8 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first. The page also states a minimum 70% battery-capacity retention over the warranty period. These are coverage limits and retention terms, not a guarantee that water-related damage is covered; consult the warranty supplied with the vehicle for its applicable exclusions and terms. What should you do if an electric car has been flooded or submerged?
Tesla says to treat a vehicle exposed to flooding, extreme-weather events, or submersion—especially in salt water—as if it had been in an accident. Its UK guidance tells owners to contact their insurer and not operate the vehicle until an authorised shop has inspected it. It also says to tow the vehicle at least 50 ft (15 m) from buildings or other combustible materials. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the vehicle and situation. If flooding is forecast and the vehicle cannot be moved, Tesla lists a water-tight cover specifically designed to protect vehicles from flooding as one possible preparation measure. Tesla’s manual says the high-voltage system must be serviced only by a trained technician and warns owners not to open or tamper with the battery or disassemble, remove, or replace high-voltage components, cables, or connectors. What does EV flood-damage research say?
A 2024 NHTSA-hosted teardown study examined ten surviving electric vehicles and reported that the leaks observed in those vehicles were not extensive enough to cause catastrophic battery damage in the vehicles studied. That limited finding does not show that floodwater is safe for EV batteries, establish what happened to the Scottish Model Y, or rule out water damage in other vehicles.
