Re:

Tesla Sales Are Slipping—But Some Rivals Are Growing in the U.S. EV Market

Tesla is losing U.S. EV sales, while GM, Chevrolet, Toyota and Subaru are gaining in different ways. The broader market, however, has contracted from its 2025 high.

Yes—some electric-vehicle brands are selling better than Tesla, but that does not mean the U.S. EV market is healthy across the board. Tesla remains the dominant U.S. EV seller despite declining volume. General Motors, Chevrolet, Toyota and Subaru have posted notable gains, while total EV sales and market share have fallen from their 2025 peak.

What the latest U.S. numbers actually show

The clearest comparison comes from Cox Automotive and Kelley Blue Book estimates for the United States. These figures count battery-electric vehicles unless stated otherwise; they are not audited automaker delivery totals or consumer surveys.

Measure Result What it means
U.S. EV share, calendar 2025 7.8% of new-vehicle sales Down from 8.1% in 2024
EV share, Q3 2025 10.5% The recent quarterly high in the cited data
EV share, Q4 2025 5.8% A sharp decline from Q3
U.S. EV sales, Q1 2026 216,399, down 27% year over year The category contracted versus Q1 2025
EV share, Q2 2026 Approximately 5.8% Share stabilized near the Q4 level, but below the 2025 peak

So the accurate answer to “Are electric car sales still falling?” is: overall sales were still lower year over year in the first quarter of 2026, and second-quarter share remained well below the 2025 high. A few brands are growing inside that smaller market.

Tesla is losing sales but still leads by a wide margin

Cox estimates that Tesla sold 589,000 EVs in the U.S. in 2025, a decline of 7%, or about 44,000 vehicles, from 2024. In the first half of 2026, Cox said Tesla sales were down more than 10% year over year, yet the company still represented roughly half of U.S. EV sales. Model Y and Model 3 accounted for most of that performance.

  • Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.

This is the important distinction between volume and market position: Tesla can lose tens of thousands of sales and remain far ahead of every individual competitor because its starting base is so large. The available Q2 2026 commentary identifies Chevrolet as a distant second, not as a brand close to Tesla’s total.

Which EV brands are gaining sales?

General Motors

GM was the strongest quantified challenger in the full-year 2025 data. Cox estimates that GM sold more than 150,000 EVs in the United States, up 48% from 2024 and equal to 13% of U.S. EV sales. The result places GM well behind Tesla in absolute volume but shows that a legacy automaker can expand quickly from a smaller base.

Chevrolet

In Q2 2026, Chevrolet was the second-largest U.S. EV brand according to Cox, although still a distant second to Tesla. The source does not provide a comparable Chevrolet unit total in the cited commentary, so the ranking should not be read as evidence that Chevrolet has closed the gap.

Toyota and Subaru

Cox also reported that Toyota and Subaru doubled their EV volume year over year in Q2 2026. “Doubled” describes growth from each brand’s prior-year base; the cited material does not state their resulting unit totals or combined market share. Their percentage gains therefore should not be compared directly with Tesla’s much larger sales base.

General Motors 2025 More than 150,000 EVs; up 48%; 13% share Cox estimate
Chevrolet Q2 2026 Distant second to Tesla Unit total not stated in the cited Q2 commentary
Toyota Q2 2026 EV volume doubled year over year Unit total and share not stated
Subaru Q2 2026 EV volume doubled year over year Unit total and share not stated

Why rival growth does not mean the EV market is thriving

The category’s trajectory is weaker than the headline wins suggest. EVs made up 7.8% of U.S. new-vehicle sales in 2025, down from 8.1% in 2024. Share then swung from 10.5% in Q3 2025 to 5.8% in Q4. Q1 2026 sales fell 27% year over year to 216,399, and Q2 share was approximately 5.8%.

In a shrinking or flat category, one manufacturer’s gain can come partly from another manufacturer’s loss rather than from a large expansion in total electric-car demand. The evidence supports a mixed market: Tesla is under pressure, selected competitors are taking share, and total EV penetration has retreated from its high point.

What changed after 2025?

Cox’s 2025 and 2026 commentary points to a demand adjustment after federal purchase incentives expired. That is the source’s explanation for the timing, not proof that incentives alone caused every sales change. Pricing, inventory, model availability, product mix, financing conditions and local incentives can also affect quarterly results.

Product strategy is another variable. Cox has identified vehicles such as the 2026 Chevrolet Bolt, Rivian R2 and BMW iX3 as future products that could broaden consumer choice. The cited material does not establish how many units those vehicles will sell, so their contribution remains prospective rather than a reported result.

Stephanie Valdez Streaty, Cox Automotive’s director of Industry Insights, said the next phase of EV growth will depend on how effectively automakers turn technology advances into products that meet expectations for “affordability, utility, performance, and ownership experience.” That framework helps explain why a lower-priced or better-equipped new model could gain share even while the overall market is soft.

What the September 2026 forecast does—and does not—tell us

On September 24, 2026, Cox forecast Tesla’s total U.S. vehicle sales—not its EV sales—at 123,880 for Q3, down 31% from Q3 2025. It forecast 365,980 total vehicle sales year to date, down 18.9% from the comparable 2025 period.

Those are forecasts in a general new-vehicle release, not finalized Q3 EV results. They cannot be substituted for a Tesla EV count or used to calculate the company’s Q3 EV market share. At the September 27, 2026 reporting date, finalized Q3 2026 EV brand results were not available in the cited material.

How to read the next round of EV results

  • Use the same geography: compare U.S. figures with U.S. figures, not global deliveries.
  • Use the same time window: compare Q3 with Q3 or full-year results with full-year results.
  • Separate powertrains: do not combine battery EVs with hybrids or plug-in hybrids unless the source defines them together.
  • Check both units and share: a brand can lose sales while remaining dominant, or post rapid growth from a small base.
  • Label estimates and forecasts: Cox’s counts are market estimates, while the September release is a forecast rather than a finalized EV report.

The next complete quarterly release should clarify whether Tesla’s decline accelerated, whether Chevrolet and GM sustained their gains, and whether Toyota and Subaru’s percentage growth translated into meaningful national volume.
