Tesla announced in January 2026 that it was beginning to phase out the upfront payment option for Full Self-Driving (FSD) (Supervised). Tesla’s current U.S. terms now offer the software by subscription, not outright purchase. The practical change is a recurring bill for new subscribers—not the automatic removal of every older purchase: some used vehicles retain FSD bought by a previous owner.
What changed—and when?
In its January 28, 2026 investor update, Tesla said it was transitioning FSD (Supervised) to monthly subscriptions as it began to sunset the upfront payment option. Tesla’s current U.S. support page reflects the resulting policy: outright purchase is unavailable, while subscription access is offered. Tesla Support’s subscription page is the source for current U.S. terms.
This change does not mean every legacy purchase disappeared. Tesla’s used-vehicle guidance distinguishes an outright purchase that remains with a vehicle from a subscription, which does not transfer to a buyer.
How much does FSD (Supervised) cost?
Tesla’s U.S. subscription page lists the price as $99 per month, checked October 4, 2026. Tesla says price and features may change, so confirm the amount shown for your vehicle before subscribing. The U.S. price should not be assumed to apply in other markets. Tesla Support

Tesla reported that monthly FSD subscriptions “more than doubled in 2025,” but did not provide an underlying subscriber count or an exact growth percentage in the cited passage. That company-wide statement does not establish whether subscribing is less expensive than the former upfront option for a particular owner; a break-even estimate would depend on the historical purchase price, how long the owner keeps access, and individual use.
How do you subscribe, and is your Tesla eligible?
You can subscribe through the Tesla app or the vehicle touchscreen, or add FSD (Supervised) when ordering a new Tesla. An app subscription is limited to the Tesla Account that owns the vehicle. Eligibility depends on the particular vehicle: Tesla says the app shows whether it qualifies, and some configurations may require a separately paid hardware upgrade. What happens when you cancel?
You can cancel at any time, but Tesla does not prorate the monthly payment. Access continues through the end of the current billing period. In practice, canceling stops future renewals; it does not provide a refund for the unused portion of a month. What happens to FSD when a Tesla is sold or replaced?
If the previous owner subscribed
A subscription does not transfer with the car. The buyer needs to subscribe using their own Tesla Account if they want access. Tesla’s transfer guidance
If the previous owner bought FSD outright
Tesla says an outright purchase may remain with the used vehicle if the previous owner did not transfer it to another vehicle. Do not assume a used Tesla has a purchase attached: check the specific vehicle’s status. Tesla says its transfer program ended March 31, 2026. When an eligible transfer was completed, FSD stays with the receiving vehicle and the transfer cannot be reversed. Tesla Support

What to weigh before adding the monthly bill
- Recurring cost: Use the price currently shown for your vehicle and location, rather than treating the U.S. $99 monthly figure as universal.
- Potential one-time cost: Check whether your specific configuration needs a separately paid hardware upgrade.
- How long you expect to use it: A monthly plan can be canceled, but each paid month is not prorated. There is no general break-even point supported by the available purchase-price and usage information.
- Vehicle changes: A subscription does not follow a sold car to its buyer. An older outright purchase may remain with a vehicle, subject to Tesla’s transfer rules.
- Insurance: Tesla says some customers in certain states may receive an insurance premium discount when using FSD, which in some cases can completely offset the subscription cost. That is a qualified claim about Tesla’s insurance offering, not a typical saving or a discount guaranteed by other insurers. FSD (Supervised) is not autonomous driving
“Full Self-Driving” is Tesla’s product name. Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as a suite of driver-assistance features requiring a fully attentive driver prepared to take over at any moment. Its subscription agreement says the system requires active driver supervision, with eyes on the road, and does not make the vehicle autonomous.
