Tesla Model 3 LFP: Should You Charge to 100% Every Day?

Tesla recommends a 100% charge limit for Model 3 LFP batteries, but available studies do not quantify the degradation impact of daily full charging in Tesla’s LFP pack.

For a Model 3 with an LFP battery, Tesla recommends setting the charge limit to 100% even for daily use and charging fully at least once a week. Battery-aging studies support the general idea that charge level can affect aging, but the available evidence does not quantify how much daily charging to 100% changes degradation in Tesla’s LFP pack. So it is not established that the effect is zero—or that it is large enough to matter in everyday ownership.

Should you charge a Model 3 LFP battery to 100% every day?

If your car has an LFP battery, follow its vehicle-specific charge guidance: Tesla recommends a 100% charge limit, including for daily use, and a full charge to 100% at least once a week. Tesla’s LFP charging instructions are different from the general 80% daily-limit guidance shown for some other vehicles.

The distinction is between charging to 100% and leaving the car parked at or near 100% for a long time. Tesla’s general battery-care guidance says to avoid leaving the battery near 0% or 100% for extended periods whenever possible. For convenience, you can schedule charging so the car reaches its target near the time you expect to drive, if that works with your routine.

Does charging an LFP Tesla to 100% hurt the battery?

High state of charge can contribute to calendar aging, the gradual loss of capacity that occurs over time. But the studies available do not provide a reliable percentage-point estimate for the additional degradation, if any, from daily 100% charging in a Tesla Model 3 LFP pack. Tesla’s recommendation to charge LFP vehicles fully is practical vehicle guidance, not proof that charging to 100% has no aging effect.

The chemistry and test conditions matter. A 2024 study of cells taken from a 2018 Model 3 Long Range found that state-of-charge windows affected degradation, including faster calendar aging at high state of charge. Those cells used NCA chemistry, not LFP, so the results cannot quantify aging in an LFP Model 3. The study is published in the Journal of Energy Storage.

Separate LFP cell experiments also show that charge level and temperature can influence calendar aging. One 2020 study reported nearly 5% calendar capacity loss for Sony cells and nearly 8% for BYD cells after 30 months. Those results describe specific laboratory cell tests; they are not Tesla Model 3 pack degradation rates and do not isolate the extra loss caused by charging to 100%. The study details the cell experiments. A 2025 LFP aging study likewise examines factors including storage state of charge, temperature, pressure, and cycling protocol, but does not establish a Tesla-pack estimate for daily full charging. See the study on LFP calendar and cycle aging.

Is it better to charge to 80% or 100%?

For an LFP-equipped Model 3, Tesla’s specific recommendation is 100%, not the 80% daily limit that may apply to other vehicles. Use the charge limit and advice shown for your exact car rather than assuming every Model 3 has the same battery or guidance. If you need the range, charging to the recommended limit is consistent with Tesla’s LFP instructions; there is no established Tesla LFP pack comparison showing a numerical degradation trade-off between daily 100% and a lower routine limit.

Charging at home can make regular full charging easier. Tesla recommends Level 1 or Level 2 charging when possible, including a suitable wall outlet or Tesla Wall Connector. Check that any charging equipment matches your region, electrical supply, connector, and vehicle year; a charger is a convenience, not a fix required to prevent degradation.

How can you tell if your Model 3 has an LFP battery?

Check the vehicle’s Additional Vehicle Information screen. Tesla’s instructions identify an LFP pack by the entry “High Voltage Battery type: Lithium Iron Phosphate.” Do not determine the chemistry solely from trim, model year, or country; the vehicle’s screen and current manual are the better references because specifications and guidance can vary. Tesla’s LFP instructions explain the identification check.

How can you check battery health?

Some Model 3 vehicles offer a Battery Health screen and an optional Battery Health Test. Tesla says the screen uses battery-management information and expected retention for the vehicle’s battery type, age, and use. The test compares measured energy retention with the battery’s condition when new; it may require connection to an AC charger for up to 24 hours, and it is not equipped on every vehicle. Tesla recommends the test if you are concerned about energy retention. See the Model 3 battery-health manual.
