Engadget reported reductions of 15% to 19%, depending on trim, with starting prices of $74,990 for Model S and $79,990 for Model X. Those figures are historical and should not be used as today’s purchase quote.
What Tesla’s September 2023 price cuts were
Engadget reported that Tesla lowered U.S. Model S and Model X prices by 15% to 19%, with the size of the reduction varying by trim. Its reported starting prices after the reductions were:
- Model S: $74,990.
- Model X: $79,990.
These are the starting prices Engadget reported on September 1, 2023; they are not current prices or a promise that every configuration was available at that amount. Engadget’s September 2023 report described the percentage reduction as dependent on model and trim.
How the reported trim prices compared
Car and Driver’s September 1, 2023 update reported different specific trim figures. It listed the Long Range versions and the revised Plaid prices as follows:

Why March 2023 prices should not be mixed with September’s
Tesla had changed prices earlier in 2023. Cars.com reported on March 6 that the base dual-motor Model S was $91,380 and the base Model X was $101,380. Those reported prices included a $1,390 destination charge and excluded tax credits; Cars.com listed each Plaid version at $111,380. They describe the March pricing event, not the September reductions.

Keeping the dates and price basis together matters when comparing a cut: a figure that includes destination charges is not directly comparable to one that does not, and an earlier price cannot stand in for the immediately preceding price in a later reduction. What the 2023 tax-credit discussion did—and did not—mean
Car and Driver noted that, under the U.S. federal EV-credit MSRP limits applicable at the time of its September 2023 report, the Model X could fall under the $80,000 ceiling for SUVs, while the Model S was above the $55,000 ceiling for cars. Those were 2023 rules and prices. They are not current tax guidance, and eligibility should not be inferred from a historical article or a vehicle’s advertised starting price. Buyers need to check the rules and vehicle qualifications in effect for their own purchase date.

Is this a current Tesla price cut?
No. The headline describes a 2023 U.S. event. Tesla’s official China promotions page, updated September 25, 2026, lists inventory-configuration discounts for qualifying orders placed from September 7 through October 31, 2026. The terms depend on model, year or version, inventory status, paid configuration, and purchase conditions. That China-specific offer does not establish U.S. prices or a global reduction. Tesla’s description of the 2025 Model S and Model X refresh covers changes such as cabin noise, wheels, ambient lighting, and convenience features; it does not establish current prices. For current pricing, consult Tesla’s official order page for the relevant market and configuration rather than relying on the 2023 figures. Tesla’s 2025 refresh announcement describes the vehicle updates, not a live price list.

How to compare a real offer with an old headline
When evaluating a current quote, compare prices on the same basis and for the same market and date. Check the exact trim, destination charge, included options, inventory status, order conditions, and any incentives for which you may qualify. A percentage reduction reported in 2023 does not tell you the price of a particular vehicle today.
