Protests appeared outside Tesla locations in at least 100 cities, some owners used anti-Musk bumper stickers, and Tesla disclosed to the SEC that criticism of the company and its management had incited protests, including some that escalated into violence.
But the financial picture needs a time-based distinction. Tesla’s deliveries fell sharply in the first half of 2025, when the protest movement and consumer backlash intensified. The company later reported a substantial global delivery rebound in the second quarter of 2026. The evidence supports lasting brand damage and a meaningful political risk, but not the claim that Musk’s politics alone caused every decline—or that the backlash is still accelerating uniformly in every market.
What triggered the Tesla backlash?
The backlash accelerated in early 2025 after Musk became closely involved with the Trump administration and led the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. His endorsement of Donald Trump, support for right-wing political figures in Europe, and controversial public statements turned Tesla ownership into a political signal for some consumers.
That created a problem for a company whose products appeal to a broad consumer market. A buyer may like Tesla’s charging network, software, efficiency, or performance while strongly disliking the public politics associated with its chief executive. Some owners responded with stickers and signs separating their vehicle from Musk. Protesters organized under names including #TeslaTakedown and #TeslaTakeover.

Peaceful demonstrations should not be conflated with separate criminal incidents. Reporting also documented vandalism, arson, gunfire, and attacks involving Tesla vehicles, dealerships, and charging equipment. Those acts should be assessed individually; there is no basis for attributing all violence to the broader protest movement.
Why this matters to personal finances
A political controversy can affect a car company through several financial channels:
| Channel | Potential financial effect |
|---|---|
| Demand | Some customers delay a purchase, choose another electric vehicle, or avoid the brand altogether. |
| Resale values | Lower demand for used Teslas can reduce trade-in offers and increase depreciation for existing owners. |
| Business costs | Security, repairs, insurance claims, public relations, and disrupted operations can increase expenses. |
| Investor sentiment | Shareholders may apply a larger risk discount when the company and CEO are difficult to separate. |
| Financing and capital | Tesla warned that negative perceptions could affect its ability to raise funds, although the filing did not say that a funding crisis had occurred. |
For a household, the most immediate exposure is usually not a stock-market loss. It is the combined cost of depreciation, insurance, repairs, charging access, and the opportunity cost of choosing one vehicle over another.
Tesla’s own SEC filing acknowledged the risk
In its Form 10-Q filed on April 23, 2025, Tesla said criticism of the company and its management had “incited protests.” It said some protests escalated to violence targeting Tesla’s operations, products, and personnel. The company warned that negative perceptions could harm its brand, sales, business, and ability to raise funds.
This is important evidence that the controversy was financially relevant. It is not proof that protests caused a specific number of lost sales. SEC risk disclosures are designed to identify material risks, including risks that may or may not occur and risks that may combine with other business problems.
Sales fell during the backlash—but politics was only one factor
Tesla delivered 336,681 vehicles in the first quarter of 2025, compared with 386,810 in the first quarter of 2024—a decline of about 13%. In the second quarter of 2025, it delivered 384,122 vehicles, down 13% from 443,956 a year earlier.

The timing made Musk’s politics an obvious part of the story, but several other explanations were operating at the same time:
- An aging product range: Tesla had fewer genuinely new models than many competitors entering the market.
- More competition: Established automakers and Chinese manufacturers offered consumers more electric-vehicle choices and, in some markets, aggressive pricing.
- Model Y transition: Production changes for the refreshed Model Y disrupted the product cycle, while some buyers waited for the updated version.
- Regional conditions and incentives: Tax credits, subsidies, interest rates, and local EV demand influenced purchasing decisions.
- Brand politics: Musk’s public role made Tesla more politically identifiable, potentially discouraging customers who would otherwise consider the vehicles.
The responsible conclusion is that the backlash coincided with a severe sales slump and likely contributed to it. It is not that every lost delivery was caused by Musk.
Brand measures show damage beyond quarterly deliveries
The damage is visible in reputation data as well as sales figures. In the 2025 Axios Harris Poll 100, Tesla fell from eighth place in 2021 to 95th place, ranking last in the poll’s character category. The poll also found a substantial partisan divide: Republicans viewed Tesla more favorably than Democrats.
A peer-reviewed 2026 study, Tesla Takedown: Brand Politicization and Partisan Consumerism in the Trump Era, likewise found that Democrats’ evaluations of Tesla became more negative while Republicans’ evaluations improved after Musk’s endorsement of Trump and his early-administration political role.
That shift can be financially damaging even if some customers become more supportive. A mass-market vehicle company generally benefits from a wide potential customer base. Turning the brand into a partisan symbol may increase loyalty among one group while excluding a larger or differently distributed group in important markets.
How much did Musk’s politics cost Tesla?
One Yale-linked summary of a 2025 working paper estimated that Musk’s “partisan effect” may have cost Tesla between 1 million and 1.26 million U.S. vehicle sales from October 2022 through April 2025. That is a model-based research estimate, not an audited Tesla figure. Analysts quoted in the summary questioned whether the estimate was too large.

It should therefore be treated as an indication of possible scale, not a settled measurement. The study is useful because it attempts to isolate political effects, but real-world vehicle sales are influenced by many overlapping variables. No outside estimate can cleanly observe how every potential buyer would have behaved if Musk had made different political choices.
Is the backlash still spreading fast?
The wording “spreading fast” best describes the protest surge of February through April 2025. By February 28, Axios reported protests outside Tesla locations in at least 100 cities. The company’s April SEC filing confirmed that the issue had become significant enough to include in its formal risk disclosures.
The latest delivery data requires a more cautious present-tense conclusion. Tesla reported 480,126 global deliveries in the second quarter of 2026, up from 384,122 in the second quarter of 2025. It reported 467,762 Model 3 and Model Y deliveries and deployed 13.5 gigawatt-hours of energy storage.
The Washington Post described this as Tesla’s second consecutive quarterly sales gain. However, Cox Automotive estimated that U.S. sales were still down about 20% year over year. That estimate is not a Tesla-reported regional figure; Tesla’s quarterly delivery release does not provide regional totals.
For consumers and investors, the best current reading is mixed:
- The political backlash caused measurable reputational harm.
- It coincided with a major 2025 delivery decline.
- Tesla’s global deliveries later rebounded significantly.
- The United States may still be weaker than the global headline suggests.
- There is no reliable basis for saying Musk’s politics explains the entire sales movement.
What Tesla owners and prospective buyers should consider
For someone considering a Tesla
Separate the purchase decision from the political controversy and check the practical numbers. Compare the vehicle’s total cost with alternatives, including insurance, financing, charging, tires, maintenance, expected depreciation, and available incentives. Also consider whether a weaker resale market would matter if you sell in two or three years.

If the brand association would make you uncomfortable, that is a legitimate ownership cost even if it does not appear on a spreadsheet. A vehicle is used publicly every day, and reputational discomfort can affect how much value you receive from it.
For an existing Tesla owner
Do not assume a protest headline automatically means you should sell. Selling early can crystallize depreciation, transaction costs, and any remaining loan shortfall. First compare:

Also document vandalism or threats and contact your insurer and local authorities where appropriate. Peaceful political protest and criminal damage are different issues, and insurance treatment depends on the event, policy, deductible, and jurisdiction.
For a Tesla shareholder
Assess CEO concentration risk, brand risk, product-cycle risk, competition, margins, and regional demand rather than using a single delivery number. Musk’s public role can create both operational distraction and reputational volatility. A strong quarter does not erase those risks, while a weak quarter does not prove that politics was the sole cause.
Investors should read Tesla’s quarterly filings, delivery releases, automotive gross-margin information, inventory trends, and management commentary. Avoid treating social-media engagement, protest counts, or one poll ranking as a direct forecast of earnings.

Musk’s politics transformed Tesla from a relatively straightforward electric-vehicle brand into a politically charged consumer and investment story. The 2025 protests, reputation collapse, and delivery declines show that brand identity can have financial consequences. Tesla itself recognized the possibility of damage to sales, operations, and financing.

Still, the latest global delivery rebound means the claim that the backlash is simply “spreading fast” is too broad as a current assessment. For personal-finance decisions, focus on measurable costs—vehicle depreciation, financing, insurance, replacement prices, and portfolio exposure—while treating claims about the exact number of politically lost sales as estimates rather than facts.
FAQ
Did Musk’s politics cause Tesla’s 2025 sales decline?
It likely contributed to the decline, but it was not the only factor. Tesla also faced an aging lineup, stronger competition, Model Y production and changeover issues, buyers delaying purchases, and regional market conditions.
How many Teslas did the company deliver in 2025 and 2026?
Tesla delivered 336,681 vehicles in Q1 2025 and 384,122 in Q2 2025. It later reported 480,126 global deliveries in Q2 2026, up from 384,122 in Q2 2025.
Should I sell my Tesla because of the backlash?
Not automatically. Compare the vehicle’s current market value, loan payoff, replacement cost, insurance, depreciation, and your personal comfort with the brand before deciding. Selling can make sense if the vehicle no longer fits your needs, but a headline alone is not a complete financial plan.
Has Tesla’s brand reputation been damaged?
Yes, several indicators point to reputational damage. Tesla fell from eighth to 95th in the 2025 Axios Harris Poll 100, and a 2026 peer-reviewed study found a growing partisan split in how consumers evaluated the brand.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Tesla backlash became a legitimate business and brand risk after Musk’s political activity intensified in 2025, and it coincided with a major delivery decline. But Tesla’s Q2 2026 global rebound shows why consumers and investors should not treat politics as the sole explanation for sales. Evaluate the concrete financial effects—depreciation, insurance, financing, resale value, and portfolio risk—rather than relying on a protest headline or an unverified estimate of lost sales.
