A frequently repeated historical estimate of £26.5 million is disputed: Pratchett criticized it as a speculative valuation of Discworld rights, not a report of his wealth.
Is Terry Pratchett’s net worth publicly known?
No reliable public source reviewed establishes a verified total for Pratchett’s personal net worth or the value of his estate. No official financial statement or estate filing cited here supplies one. The available record supports a distinction between his considerable publishing success and any precise claim about his personal finances.
Net worth is not the same as book sales or the estimated value of intellectual-property rights. Calculating it would require information about royalties and contract terms, taxes and costs, liabilities, and the ownership and valuation of rights. Those details are not established in the sources cited here.
Where did the £26.5 million estimate come from?
The £26.5 million figure appeared in newspaper coverage as an estimate of Pratchett’s wealth. In a response reproduced by The Annotated Pratchett File, Pratchett attributed it to a Business Age survey and challenged its assumptions, including extrapolating US sales from UK sales.

He objected in particular to treating the value of rights as personal wealth: “But the big wobbler is that the estimate is of ‘worth’, not ‘wealth’ — they’ve hazarded a wild guess at the value of the Discworld rights, as far as we can tell including film rights as well.” The quotation is reproduced in the annotated reference, rather than on a primary interview page reviewed here. It is evidence that Pratchett disputed the estimate, not an alternative valuation.
Accordingly, £26.5 million should not be presented as a verified fortune, cash balance, inheritance, or estate value.

What do his book sales tell us?
Bloomsbury’s undated author page, accessed in 2026, reports 70 million worldwide book sales and translations into 37 languages. These are publisher-reported career figures, not audited estate accounts or evidence of how much Pratchett personally retained.
The estate biography says Pratchett wrote over fifty books and created Discworld. His first novel, The Carpet People, was published in 1971; the first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic, followed in 1983. These milestones show the scale and longevity of his career, but they cannot establish a net-worth total.

What is known about his estate and biography?
Pratchett died on 12 March 2015, as reported by The Guardian. The sources cited here do not establish a current royalty income, a complete estate inventory, the value or precise ownership of rights, liabilities, or how any inheritance was distributed. A figure described as his “net worth at death” would therefore go beyond the available evidence.
Terry Pratchett: A Life with Footnotes, written by Rob Wilkins, was published in 2022 and is identified by the estate as the official biography. Its official page does not claim to disclose an audited net-worth figure.
