That is a measure of where outstanding futures exposure was concentrated—not proof that risk was limited to those tokens, or that a market-wide liquidation cascade was imminent. Whether a loss in one position can affect another depends on the trader’s venue, account setup and margin mode.
What Talos’s 62% figure measures
Talos’s report, published October 1, 2026, says the ten largest altcoins by open interest carried 62% of total altcoin open interest during its September 24–30 reporting window. SOL, XRP, HYPE and ZEC were among the largest markets in that group. The report text does not name all ten tokens, so the 62% should not be read as a list of ten specific contracts beyond those it identifies. Talos’s October 1 report
Open interest (OI) is the amount of outstanding contracts that have not been closed, offset or settled under the relevant contract’s rules. It is not trading volume, which measures trading activity over a period, and it is not a count of unique traders. In futures, every open contract has a buyer and a seller, but only one side is counted in open interest; CME explains this convention in its open-interest guide. OI therefore measures unresolved exposure, not a net tally of bullish or bearish positions. Crypto perpetual venues may apply their own contract and data conventions, so Talos’s statistic is best understood as its reported altcoin OI measure.
A high share among the largest markets indicates concentration in the aggregate measure. It does not establish that the remaining exposure is safe, that traders in those markets are on the same side, or that a loss in one contract must be offset by gains elsewhere.

What the 5.6% ratio does—and does not—say
Talos also reported altcoin open interest at 5.6% of market capitalization, calling it a record in its own series. The ratio compares outstanding-contract exposure with a measure of token value. Talos’s published account does not fully specify its market-capitalization denominator or all inclusion conventions, so the 5.6% is not directly interchangeable with another provider’s calculation or a universal measure of leverage. Talos’s explanation of the series
In particular, the ratio does not mean every altcoin, exchange or account was leveraged by the same amount. It says nothing by itself about an individual trader’s collateral, leverage, liquidation price or the liquidity available to close a position.

How funding payments work
Funding is a periodic payment between the long and short sides of a perpetual contract. Its purpose is to help keep the contract price near the underlying asset, but the rate, payment interval and calculation differ by venue. Hyperliquid’s documentation describes its own system: positive funding means longs pay shorts, while negative funding means shorts pay longs. Hyperliquid pays hourly, dividing its formula’s eight-hour rate into hourly payments; those rules should not be generalized to other exchanges. Hyperliquid’s funding documentation
Talos’s September 24–30 snapshot reported PUMP funding at +21.8% annualized and SOL funding below zero. Those are dated observations from that report, not current rates or guaranteed annual borrowing costs. Talos’s funding observations

A separate, later example shows why a funding direction should not be treated as fixed: CryptoSlate reported Binance PUMPUSDT settlement rates of −0.001748% at 00:00 UTC and +0.001227% at 04:00 UTC on October 5, 2026, and said the paying side reversed. How one position can affect another
Open-interest concentration and collateral sharing describe different things. OI is an aggregate market measure. Margin mode determines how collateral is applied within a particular venue and account. Under cross margin, eligible positions may share collateral; under isolated margin, collateral is restricted to the relevant position or asset according to the venue’s rules.

Hyperliquid documents cross margin as sharing collateral among cross-margin positions. Under its stated rules, cross positions can be liquidated when account value falls below the maintenance-margin condition. Its isolated-margin calculations instead use the isolated position’s margin and notional. Account modes can also affect which positions share collateral. These are Hyperliquid-specific rules, not a description of every exchange. Hyperliquid’s margin documentation
For a cross-margined account, a loss in one eligible position can reduce the account value supporting other eligible positions. If the account then fails the venue’s maintenance-margin condition, the venue may liquidate positions according to its rules. With isolated margin, a loss is generally confined to the collateral assigned to that isolated position, though the exact outcome still depends on the venue’s contract and liquidation rules. Neither mode eliminates market risk: isolated collateral can be lost, while cross margin can expose more of an account’s shared collateral.

What evidence is needed to judge spillover or cascade risk
The 62% concentration figure alone cannot show whether losses will spill from one position to another or trigger liquidations. A more specific assessment needs information that the aggregate snapshot does not provide:
- Comparable market exposure: token and contract coverage, venue inclusion rules, observation times, and whether the figure is contract count or dollar-valued OI.
- Account margin conditions: the venue and account mode, which positions share collateral, collateral value, leverage, maintenance requirements and liquidation distances.
- Liquidity: available market depth and the conditions under which positions could be closed or liquidated.
- Ratio methodology: the tokens included, sampling window and market-capitalization convention when comparing OI-to-market-cap ratios across providers.
Without those details, the concentration supports neither a claim that risk is safely contained to a handful of markets nor a prediction that a cascade will happen. Talos’s statement that concentration implies risk is contained to a handful of runners is its interpretation of the aggregate snapshot, not an account-level finding.
