TELUS offered voluntary separation packages to nearly 700 employees across Canada in January 2026, according to reporting based on information from United Steelworkers (USW) representatives. More than 500 of the workers were USW members. The offers covered selected TELUS Business Solutions operations in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec—not every TELUS employee in those provinces.
Recipients reportedly had until January 21, 2026, to decide, with departures expected to begin in mid-February. The number who accepted, the number who actually left and the financial terms of the packages have not been publicly established in the available reporting.
What TELUS offered
The program was described as voluntary separation, voluntary severance or buyout packages. In practical terms, eligible employees were offered an incentive to leave rather than being told that every recipient had already been terminated.
TELUS said the packages exceeded the requirements of the Canada Labour Code and that making offers broadly across affected work areas was standard practice. That is the company’s characterization, not an independent legal ruling. The publicly available reports do not set out a verified dollar amount, salary-continuation period or complete treatment of benefits, pensions, bonuses, commissions, vacation pay or taxes.

Who was included
Reporting based on USW Local 1944 information identified TELUS Business Solutions operations in four provinces:
- British Columbia
- Alberta
- Ontario
- Quebec
Reported occupational groups included call-centre employees, wireless and wireline operations staff, network assurance teams and National Business Delivery technicians. The reports do not establish that every employee in those functions, or every TELUS division, was eligible.

Why TELUS made the offers
TELUS linked the initiative to rapid change in telecommunications and increasing customer demand for digital and self-serve services. The company described a shift toward digital and automated customer interactions and related operational restructuring.

TELUS also announced a July 2026 consolidation of its telecom businesses to pursue sustainable growth and operational efficiencies. Those announcements provide broader context, but TELUS did not establish in the cited reports that a particular later financial target or consolidation caused the January offers.
What the union said
USW representatives criticized additional workforce reductions. The union warned that fewer employees could reduce service levels, harm communities and the Canadian economy, and encourage work to be outsourced overseas. Those are union assessments and warnings, not independently verified outcomes for every affected role or customer.

Buyouts are not the same as confirmed layoffs
The most important distinction is between an offer and an actual job loss:
| Stage | What is established |
|---|---|
| Offer | TELUS reportedly offered packages to nearly 700 employees nationally. |
| Acceptance | The number who accepted has not been disclosed in the reviewed reporting. |
| Departure | Departures were expected to begin in mid-February 2026, but completion is not confirmed. |
| Layoff | A forced termination cannot be inferred simply because an employee received a voluntary offer. |
Accordingly, it is inaccurate to say that TELUS laid off 700 people, that 700 employees accepted buyouts or that 700 positions were eliminated. The reported figure is the number offered packages.

How the 2025 rounds fit in
The January 2026 offers followed separate rounds reported in February 2025. A February 27, 2025 Canadian Press report said TELUS was offering buyouts to about 560 workers nationally. It described that as a second buyout wave that month and linked it to an earlier offer of voluntary severance packages to 545 employees in several departments.

USW Local 1944 separately said on February 3, 2025, that approximately 545 craft members had received voluntary severance packages. Because these reports may refer to related but different employee groups, the figures should not be added to produce a cumulative total. They also do not establish how many people ultimately departed.

A voluntary package can provide more certainty or compensation than a later involuntary termination, but accepting it ends the employee’s claim to continued employment under the existing arrangement. Potential trade-offs include lost future wages, pension accrual, promotions, wage increases or redeployment opportunities. General considerations do not establish the terms of TELUS’s specific offer.
Workers should obtain the complete written agreement and verify:

What remains unknown
- How many employees accepted the January 2026 offers.
- How many actually departed and when.
- The package’s precise financial and benefit terms.
- Whether employees were redeployed to other roles.
- Whether every position associated with an offer was ultimately eliminated.
- Whether later 2026 restructuring changed the outcome.
TELUS reported approximately 100,000 team members company-wide in its July 31, 2026 second-quarter release. That figure includes the broader TELUS organization and should not be used as a count of Canadian telecom employees affected by the buyout program.
Bottom line for readers
TELUS offered voluntary buyout packages to nearly 700 employees across selected Canadian Business Solutions operations in January 2026. More than 500 were reported to be USW members. The available information does not show how many accepted, how many left or whether all offered roles disappeared. Treat the event as a reported voluntary-separation program—not proof that 700 workers were laid off—and keep the 2025 figures separate from the 2026 round.
