Phillips said the job was not right for him and his family at that point. The same Pacific Northwest roundup covered leadership changes and advisory appointments across connected fitness, 5G, recruiting software, real estate, biotech, quantum technology and philanthropy.
These are historical roles reported in 2022, not a statement of anyone’s position in 2026.
James Phillips’ abrupt departure from Stripe
Phillips arrived at Stripe in April 2022 as president of financial services and departed roughly a month later. In the statement cited by GeekWire, he called the decision painful and said Stripe was not the right move for him and his family at that time.
The report does not allege that Phillips was fired, had performance problems, or left because of a dispute with Stripe. It also does not identify who subsequently led Stripe’s financial-services organization. His exact Microsoft departure date and Stripe start date were not provided.

Why the move attracted attention
Phillips had spent about a decade at Microsoft. He joined in 2012 as a strategy adviser to Satya Nadella and later became president of Microsoft’s Digital Transformation Platform Group, an organization the report described as having more than 15,000 people.
Before Microsoft, Phillips founded Akimbi Systems, which was acquired by VMware, and founded Couchbase. At the time of the report he was also described as a board member at F5 and a strategic director at Madrona Venture Group. That background made a near-immediate exit from a high-profile Stripe post notable even though the stated reason was personal and family-related.
Michael Johnson joins JAXJOX’s advisory board
Four-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson joined the advisory board of Bellevue, Washington-based connected-fitness startup JAXJOX. The company had previously raised a reported $10 million investment in 2020, before launching its Interactive Studio workout system.

Johnson said the attraction was JAXJOX’s personalized, data-oriented approach to fitness. The appointment was advisory, not an operating executive job. The report did not specify his compensation, investment stake, term, time commitment or particular board responsibilities.

Hart’s move expanded his remit from product leadership to company-wide operations. It was an internal promotion at Compass.
University of Colorado institute
Fry was reported to be leading a new cell-and-gene-therapy institute at the University of Colorado while being identified as Sana’s head of T-cell therapeutics. The wording leaves his employment status at Sana unresolved.

Phillips’ case stands apart because it was a departure after only about a month in a prominent fintech role. The other items include an advisory appointment, an internal promotion, new hires and an academic institute leadership role. Treating them as distinct moves avoids implying a common cause.
