That is an increase of roughly 40,000 employees, or 22%, based on rounded company figures. The comparison is historical: Microsoft announced approximately 10,000 job reductions six months later, on January 18, 2023.
What Microsoft reported in its fiscal 2022 filing
Microsoft’s fiscal 2022 Form 10-K counted approximately 221,000 full-time employees at June 30, 2022. Microsoft’s fiscal year ends June 30, so this is a year-end snapshot rather than a calendar-year hiring total.
The filing covered employees, not every person who worked for or alongside Microsoft. Contractors, vendor personnel, temporary workers and other non-employees are not included in the disclosed full-time headcount.

Is the “40,000 employees” figure mathematically correct?
Yes, as a rounded year-over-year change. Microsoft reported approximately 181,000 employees at June 30, 2021 in its fiscal 2021 Form 10-K, compared with approximately 221,000 at June 30, 2022.
| Measure | Calculation or reported value |
|---|---|
| June 30, 2021 headcount | Approximately 181,000 |
| June 30, 2022 headcount | Approximately 221,000 |
| Approximate increase | 40,000 |
| Approximate percentage increase | 40,000 ÷ 181,000 = 22.1% |
Because both company figures are rounded, the precise underlying change may differ slightly. “About 40,000” and “about 22%” are therefore the accurate descriptions.
It was not all conventional hiring
The 40,000 figure is a change in reported full-time headcount. It is not a verified count of people Microsoft recruited directly. Acquisitions add employees to the acquiring company’s workforce, and the filing does not provide a complete split between organic hiring, acquired staff, attrition, timing effects and other changes.
Nuance added a substantial workforce
Microsoft completed its acquisition of Nuance Communications on March 4, 2022, for a purchase price of approximately $18.8 billion, according to the 2022 filing. Nuance brought healthcare technology, enterprise artificial-intelligence capabilities and industry-specific cloud offerings into Microsoft.

Contemporary reporting by GeekWire estimated that Nuance contributed approximately 6,500 employees.
Xandr also joined Microsoft
Microsoft completed its acquisition of advertising-technology platform Xandr on June 6, 2022. GeekWire estimated that Xandr added approximately 1,500 employees.
Those two reported estimates total roughly 8,000 people—about one-fifth of the 40,000 year-over-year increase. The remaining approximately 32,000 cannot responsibly be labeled entirely “organic hiring”: the available filings do not establish that every one of those employees was newly recruited by Microsoft.
Why coverage called it a “record” increase
The Microsoft 10-K reports headcount; it does not call the increase a record. The record characterization came from GeekWire’s historical comparison of Microsoft’s annual workforce changes. It should be understood as a reported historical analysis, not as a formal designation by Microsoft.

- July 2022: Microsoft’s fiscal 2022 10-K was filed and made public. The filing record is available through the SEC index.
- January 18, 2023: Microsoft announced approximately 10,000 job reductions.
“Before job cuts” describes this sequence. The 2022 filing did not announce or predict the later reductions.
What changed between the filing and the layoffs?
The workforce snapshot covered a period when technology companies were still expanding cloud, artificial intelligence, advertising, gaming and related operations after the pandemic-driven growth surge. By early 2023, the industry environment had shifted toward slower demand expectations and tighter cost control.
That change in conditions helps explain how rapid expansion and later restructuring can appear in the same corporate history. It does not prove that Microsoft’s 2022 hiring was financially unhealthy or that the hiring directly caused the layoffs. The headcount disclosure alone cannot establish either conclusion.

What Microsoft announced on January 18, 2023
In a January 18, 2023 Form 8-K and announcement, Microsoft said it would eliminate approximately 10,000 jobs, with the reductions expected to be completed by the end of its fiscal third quarter. Microsoft estimated an approximately $1.2 billion charge covering severance, lease-consolidation actions and hardware-portfolio changes.
Those cuts were announced about six months after the June 30, 2022 headcount date. A job reduction can refer to a position or role, while the 10-K reports employees, so subtracting the two figures is only an approximation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did the layoffs erase the hiring increase?
Not on a simple numerical comparison. Ten thousand jobs would equal about 4.5% of the 221,000-person workforce reported at June 30, 2022, while the year-over-year increase had been approximately 40,000. Even if every announced reduction were compared directly with that snapshot—which is not necessarily the case—the announced cuts were substantially smaller than the preceding increase.
That calculation does not show that the same teams, locations or roles were affected. Acquisitions, restructuring and shifting priorities can increase total headcount while reducing particular businesses at the same time.

How Microsoft’s workforce later evolved
Subsequent annual filings show that Microsoft’s reported workforce remained well above its June 2021 level:
| Fiscal year-end | Approximate full-time employees | Source |
|---|---|---|
| June 30, 2021 | 181,000 | Fiscal 2021 Form 10-K |
| June 30, 2022 | 221,000 | Fiscal 2022 Form 10-K |
| June 30, 2023 | 221,000 | Fiscal 2023 Form 10-K |
| June 30, 2024 | 228,000 | Fiscal 2024 Form 10-K |
| June 30, 2025 | 228,000 | Fiscal 2025 Form 10-K |
These later totals show the workforce did not simply return to its June 2021 size. They do not identify which roles were cut, which new positions were added, or whether particular acquired businesses expanded or contracted.
What the numbers do—and do not—show
- Established: Microsoft’s reported full-time headcount increased from approximately 181,000 to 221,000 between June 30, 2021 and June 30, 2022.
- Established: The increase was approximately 40,000 employees, or 22% using rounded figures.
- Established: Nuance and Xandr were acquired during the period, and contemporary estimates attributed roughly 8,000 employees to those deals.
- Not established: The exact number of employees hired organically by Microsoft.
- Not established: That the 2022 filing anticipated or caused the January 2023 layoffs.
- Not established: That the later cuts affected the same people or positions represented in the 2022 year-end count.
The Bottom Line
Microsoft’s workforce expanded by about 40,000 reported full-time employees to reach 221,000 at June 30, 2022. The increase reflected both substantial hiring and roughly 8,000 estimated employees from the Nuance and Xandr acquisitions. Microsoft’s approximately 10,000-job reduction announced in January 2023 was a later response to changed business conditions, not something disclosed or predicted by the 2022 filing.
