As of October 11, 2026, the company figures that can be clearly classified include Amazon’s January announcement, Microsoft’s July announcement and Xbox’s overlapping division plan. Oracle’s reported workforce decline is a different measure, while current 2026 totals for Apple and TikTok remain unverified. There is not enough verified information here to claim a complete year-to-date count across the tech industry.
Verified company announcements and workforce figures
The distinctions in the “type of figure” column matter: an announced cut, a future reduction plan and a year-over-year headcount decline are not interchangeable. The Xbox plan also overlaps Microsoft’s company-wide announcement, so the two figures must not be added together.

| Date and company | Figure and classification | Scope and geography | Company-stated context |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 2026 — Amazon | Approximately 16,000 roles affected; company announcement. | Across Amazon. The announcement said most US-based employees would have 90 days to seek another internal role. | Amazon described the cuts as completing organizational changes discussed in October, with a stated aim of reducing layers, increasing ownership and removing bureaucracy. Employees who could not or chose not to move to another role would receive transition support. Amazon’s announcement. |
| July 6, 2026 — Microsoft | Approximately 4,800 roles, about 2.1% of its global workforce; company announcement. | Mostly Commercial and Xbox, according to Microsoft. The announcement describes a global workforce share but does not specify a narrower geography for the affected roles. | Microsoft said the changes were not replacing eliminated roles with AI, while noting that AI is changing how work gets done. Microsoft’s announcement. |
| July 6, 2026 — Xbox | Approximately 1,600 role eliminations beginning July 6, within a plan to reduce the division’s team by approximately 3,200 throughout FY27. | Xbox division. The announcement does not specify a geography for the planned reduction. | This is a division-specific plan that overlaps Microsoft’s broader July announcement; it is not an additional company-wide total. Xbox described restructuring across its units and said four studios would transition to new management. Xbox’s announcement. |
| Reported July 25, 2026 — Oracle | A reported reduction of 21,000 employees over the prior 12 months, disclosed in an annual filing; year-over-year workforce decline, not necessarily 21,000 layoffs announced in 2026. | Oracle overall; the cited report does not establish a geography for this figure. | TechCrunch quoted the filing as saying AI adoption and deployment had resulted, and may continue to result, in workforce reductions. The underlying filing was linked by the report but was not independently verified here. TechCrunch’s report. |
What is and is not verified for Apple, TikTok and Meta
- Apple: No current company-confirmed 2026 cut total is verified in the available primary-source material.
- TikTok: No current company-confirmed 2026 cut total is verified in the available primary-source material.
- Meta: Search results surfaced coverage of an 8,000-role reduction, described as roughly 10% of the workforce, but no official primary announcement was verified. Treat that figure as an unconfirmed report, not a company-confirmed tracker entry.
These rows are unresolved rather than evidence that no cuts occurred. A figure should be added as a verified entry only when the announcement or reliable reporting establishes its date, scope, measurement and source.

Industry tally: a dated figure, not an October total
Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported 52,050 announced technology job cuts through March 2026. That is a cumulative announced-cut tally through March, not a full-year total or an estimate current through October. Read the Challenger report.

How to interpret a tech layoffs tracker
- Separate announcement from plan. A stated reduction over a future period is not the same as roles eliminated on the announcement date.
- Keep company and division totals distinct. A business-unit plan may sit inside a company-wide announcement; overlapping rows are not additive.
- Do not equate headcount change with announced layoffs. A year-over-year employee decline can reflect events across a 12-month period and does not, by itself, establish a matching number of new layoffs.
- Attribute explanations carefully. Microsoft explicitly said its July role eliminations were not being replaced by AI. Oracle’s AI-related filing language is reported through TechCrunch, and should not be generalized to other companies.
- Check the date and scope before comparing figures. A tracker entry is most useful when it identifies who announced the change, when it applies, which business or geography it covers, and whether the number is approximate.
