Technology billionaires held four of the top five places on Forbes’ 2021 World’s Billionaires list, led by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos at an estimated $177 billion. Luxury-goods executive Bernard Arnault ranked third, so tech did not claim every spot. Forbes’ separate industry analysis shows the broader concentration: technology billionaires accounted for six of the top 10 and eight of the top 20 richest people.
Who were the five richest people on Forbes’ 2021 list?
Forbes’ 35th annual list ranked these five people by estimated net worth. The estimates used stock prices and exchange rates from March 5, 2021, so they describe a dated snapshot rather than current wealth.
| Rank | Name | Estimated net worth | Forbes’ source-of-wealth label |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jeff Bezos | $177 billion | Amazon |
| 2 | Elon Musk | $151 billion | Tesla and SpaceX |
| 3 | Bernard Arnault | $150 billion | Luxury goods |
| 4 | Bill Gates | $124 billion | Microsoft |
| 5 | Mark Zuckerberg | $97 billion |
Thus, “tech giants dominate” is accurate for representation among the highest-ranked fortunes, not a claim that all five were technology billionaires. Arnault, who ranked third, made his fortune in luxury goods. Forbes’ full list counted 2,755 billionaires with a combined estimated net worth of $13.1 trillion, 660 more people than the prior year. Forbes’ 2021 list supplies the rankings, totals, wealth labels and valuation date.
How concentrated was wealth among technology billionaires?
Forbes’ industry analysis counted 365 technology billionaires in 2021, with combined estimated wealth of $2.5 trillion. That was an 80% increase from $1.4 trillion the prior year, while the sector’s headcount rose from 241 to 365. These are Forbes’ estimates for the technology category, not totals for every billionaire on the list.

- The 20 richest technology billionaires were worth $1.2 trillion combined—nearly half of the sector’s $2.5 trillion total.
- Technology billionaires made up six of the 10 richest people and eight of the 20 richest people overall.
- Technology ranked second by billionaire headcount, behind finance and investments, which had 371. Its aggregate wealth total exceeded the cited totals for fashion and retail ($1.7 trillion) and finance and investments ($1.5 trillion).
The industry figures and comparisons are reported in Forbes’ 2021 technology-billionaire analysis. Headcount, combined wealth and placement in the overall top ranks measure different things: a large number of people in an industry does not by itself mean that industry accounts for the largest fortunes.
What does the list show about geography?
Nine of the 20 richest technology billionaires were from China, up from six in the prior year, according to Forbes’ technology-top-20 coverage. This statistic applies only to the 20 richest technology billionaires; it does not describe the full 2021 billionaire list. Forbes’ sector coverage provides this comparison.

How should readers interpret the numbers?
Forbes’ net-worth estimates are valuations at a particular point in time, not cash holdings or guaranteed amounts someone could realize by selling assets. The list used market prices and exchange rates from March 5, 2021; share prices and currency values can change, which is why these rankings should not be read as current wealth figures.
Forbes also uses “self-made” as a classification, not a claim that a person built a billion-dollar fortune entirely alone. In its explanation of the category, Forbes says it “isn’t meant to indicate that someone created a billion-dollar fortune all on their own.” The list’s labels distinguish “self-made,” “inherited” and “inherited & growing”; the classification caveat matters when interpreting how a fortune originated. See Forbes’ explanation of its self-made category.
