Tech founder Ethan Agarwal announced a run for California governor in 2026 in August 2025, pitching his business and technology experience as a way to address the state’s high living and business costs. But the announcement is not the final word on his candidacy: California’s official 2026 primary records later listed him as a Democratic candidate for U.S. House District 17, while the governor voter-guide statements do not include him.
What Agarwal said about running for governor
TechCrunch reported on August 25, 2025, that Agarwal was running for California governor in 2026. The report described him as a Democrat who believed in capitalism and said his concerns included California’s rising cost of living and cost of doing business. He argued that those pressures were causing people and opportunities to leave the state.
TechCrunch relayed a statement Agarwal made to Axios: “California could use some business and tech acumen to fix things in a way that other candidates in the race won’t.” The quotation captures his stated rationale for entering the race; it does not establish how his policy proposals would address those costs.
Who is Ethan Agarwal?
TechCrunch identified Agarwal as a technology founder with experience in fintech and fitness technology. Its August 2025 article reported that he co-founded The Coterie, a fintech startup whose assets were sold earlier that year. Citing PitchBook for the funding figure, TechCrunch said the company had raised $80 million; the article did not state a year for that total.

TechCrunch also reported that Agarwal co-founded Aaptiv, an audio-focused fitness app. The company raised roughly $61 million before being sold to Pear Health Labs for undisclosed terms, according to the report. These company and funding details are reported by TechCrunch and are not independently established by the available official election records.
Is Ethan Agarwal still running for governor?
Later official records place Agarwal in a different contest. California’s Secretary of State certified candidate list, dated March 26, 2026, lists Ethan Agarwal as a Democrat running for U.S. House District 17, with the occupation “Small Business Owner.” He is not among the governor candidate statements displayed in the state’s official voter guide for the June 2, 2026 primary.

| Record | Date and source | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Governor announcement | TechCrunch, August 25, 2025 | Reported Agarwal’s announcement that he was running for California governor in 2026. |
| Congressional candidate listing | California Secretary of State certified candidate list, March 26, 2026 | Lists Agarwal as a Democratic candidate for U.S. House District 17, occupation “Small Business Owner.” |
| Governor voter-guide statements | California official voter guide for the June 2, 2026 primary | Agarwal does not appear among the governor candidate statements displayed. |
The records establish the later office listing, but they do not explain why his campaign focus changed. They also do not establish the result of the congressional primary, so neither point should be inferred from the candidate list or voter guide alone.

TechCrunch said fundraising events had been planned when it published its August 2025 story, with DoorDash co-founder Stanley Tang and Y Combinator president Garry Tan among the hosts. It also reported that Tan had invested in The Coterie through Initialized Capital. These were details about plans and reported ties at the time of publication, not confirmation of later campaign activity.
