Re:

TCL’s CES 2025 surprise was a Mini-LED TV you could preorder immediately

TCL’s CES 2025 announcement covered the QM6K Mini-LED lineup—not one instantly shippable TV. Here are the preorder sizes, launch prices, soundbar offer and independent-test caveats.

TCL announced the QM6K QD-Mini LED TV series at CES 2025 on January 6, 2025—and made three sizes available for preorder during the show. The 65-, 75-, and 85-inch models launched with a complimentary TCL Q75H soundbar promotion. That was notable, but “available immediately” meant preorder availability, not necessarily same-day delivery or retail stock.

Because the launch window has passed, the QM6K should now be judged as a 2025 value-oriented Mini-LED lineup rather than a current preorder opportunity. Its appeal is large-screen pricing and gaming support; its compromises include blooming, glare, limited HDR impact, and merely adequate built-in audio.

What TCL actually launched at CES 2025

TCL did not unveil one single television. It introduced the QM6K Series, a family of 4K QD-Mini LED smart TVs positioned by TCL as an “affordable premium” range and the first step in its phased 2025 U.S. TV rollout.

The announcement was dated January 6, ahead of CES 2025’s January 7–10 exhibition. TCL’s launch announcement listed six screen sizes, but only three were identified as available for preorder at launch.

Launch prices and preorder availability

Size Launch MSRP Initial preorder status
50 inches $749.99 Not part of the initially identified preorder group
55 inches $799.99 Not part of the initially identified preorder group
65 inches $999.99 Available for preorder
75 inches $1,299.99 Available for preorder
85 inches $1,999.99 Available for preorder
98 inches $3,499.99 Announced, but not part of the initial preorder group

These were U.S. launch MSRPs from January 2025, not current prices. Anyone shopping for a QM6K today should check the live retailer listing, return policy, delivery terms, and exact model number rather than treating those figures as a current deal.

The preorder promotion included a soundbar

For the eligible 65-, 75-, and 85-inch models, TCL advertised a complimentary Q75H soundbar. TCL describes the Q75H as a 5.1.2-channel system with Dolby Atmos, a wireless subwoofer, and Ray-Danz technology. The company’s home-theater listing provides the product context.

The promotion made the preorder more meaningful for buyers who did not already own home-theater audio. However, the announcement does not establish every term—such as an expiration date, delivery timetable, regional limits, or return conditions—so the soundbar should not be assigned an assumed cash value after the fact.

Why the QM6K attracted attention

The QM6K combined features that are unusual at value-oriented prices:

  • 4K QD-Mini LED and QLED display technology.
  • Up to 500 local-dimming zones, with “up to” applying to the series rather than necessarily every size.
  • A native 144Hz refresh rate.
  • Game Accelerator 288, supporting up to 288Hz variable refresh rate in supported modes.
  • Google TV.
  • Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG, and TCL’s DLA format.
  • Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X support.
  • IMAX Enhanced and AMD FreeSync certifications.
  • Dolby Vision Filmmaker Mode and hands-free voice control.
  • An Onkyo 2.1-channel built-in speaker system.

Those are manufacturer-announced capabilities, not a guarantee that every size performs identically. In particular, refresh rate, dimming-zone count, panel finish, and picture behavior can vary by model.

What Mini-LED means in practical terms

Mini-LED TVs use many small LEDs behind an LCD panel. Local dimming allows sections of the backlight to become darker or brighter, improving contrast and black levels compared with a conventional edge-lit LCD.

Mini-LED is not the same as OLED. OLED controls each pixel individually, while an LCD Mini-LED set controls groups of backlight zones. As a result, bright objects against dark backgrounds can produce blooming—a visible halo around subtitles, stars, or other highlights.

The QM6K’s high refresh-rate claims also need context. A 144Hz signal requires compatible hardware, game settings, cable, resolution, and HDMI port. The advertised 288Hz mode applies to supported lower-resolution gaming, such as 1080p—not 4K gaming at 288Hz. Ordinary streaming and broadcast content will not become 144Hz or 288Hz simply because the panel supports those modes.

What independent testing found

Later testing provided a more balanced picture than the launch specifications alone.

RTINGS tested the 75-inch QM6K and reported support for 4K at 144Hz, 1080p at 288Hz, and VRR through the HDMI 2.1 ports. Its tested configuration had two HDMI 2.1 ports and two HDMI 2.0 ports, with one HDMI 2.0 port providing eARC. RTINGS also confirmed Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Google TV support.

The review found good black levels and accurate HDR and SDR presentation, but identified several limitations:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • HDR brightness was limited compared with more expensive high-end TVs.
  • Glare could be a problem in bright rooms.
  • Viewing quality degraded from wider angles.
  • Blooming remained visible around bright highlights.

RTINGS tested the 75-inch version, and some results may vary by size. It also identifies related variants, including the QM63K, QM6K Pro, and Canadian QM67K. A similar family name does not prove that a retailer or regional model has the same coating, warranty, accessories, or performance.

  • QD-Mini LED: This premium level of Mini LED TV, now with the New TCL Halo Control System, ensures a high-quality viewing experience.

Tom’s Guide’s review likewise praised the picture value but found the sound inconsistent enough that a separate soundbar could still be worthwhile. It reported that the 85- and 98-inch versions use a matte finish that improves glare handling, while smaller models do not receive the same benefit. TechRadar’s longer-term review also described the QM6K as a strong value-oriented Mini-LED set while noting blooming and audio limitations.

Who the QM6K suited best

The QM6K was a sensible choice for:

  • Buyers wanting a large screen without paying premium OLED or flagship Mini-LED prices.
  • Gamers with hardware capable of using 4K/144Hz or supported 1080p/288Hz modes.
  • Viewers who value contrast and black levels more than maximum HDR brightness.
  • Households that prefer Google TV.
  • Large-room buyers considering the 75-, 85-, or 98-inch class.

It was a weaker fit for:

  • Bright rooms with direct windows or strong light facing the screen, especially with smaller glossy models.
  • Viewers seeking OLED-level pixel control and minimal blooming.
  • People who demand especially bright, impactful HDR highlights.
  • Seating arrangements with frequent off-axis viewing.
  • Buyers expecting premium sound from the built-in speakers alone.

QM6K versus OLED

The QM6K’s advantages over OLED include large screen sizes, generally lower value-oriented pricing, strong gaming specifications, and no OLED burn-in concern in the same way. Its LCD design can also deliver strong contrast when local dimming is working well.

OLED remains the better fit for buyers who prioritize pixel-level black control, cleaner dark-scene presentation, and consistent picture quality from wider seating positions. The QM6K’s trade-off is that blooming, glare, and less forceful HDR can remain visible despite its Mini-LED branding.

Should someone have preordered?

Preordering made sense for a buyer who specifically wanted a 65-, 75-, or 85-inch model, valued the included Q75H soundbar, and was comfortable buying before extensive independent testing.

  • SQD-Mini LED: As the ultimate Mini LED TV, it integrates the expansive TCL Deep Color System with the breakthrough TCL Halo Control System to ensure the most brilliant, pure, and immersive viewing experience possible.
  • TCL Ultra Color Filter: TCL’s Ultra Color Filter with fine 5 nanometer particles (vs. standard 60 nanometer particles) bring every scene to life with pinpoint, pixel-perfect color accuracy.
  • HVA 2.0 Pro Panel: The HVA 2.0 Pro Panel provides a stunning picture in nearly any environment with the high contrast, anti-reflective panel.
  • Up to LD2100 Precise Dimming Series: Up to LD2100 Precise Dimming Series provides pure black levels with up to 2,100+ precisely controlled discrete local dimming zones.
  • AIPQ Pro Processor: Harnessing the power of AI to finely control Picture Clarity, Contrast, Color, Motion, Upscaling, and Backlighting, all dynamically, based on the incoming video signal.

Waiting was more rational for buyers concerned about early firmware behavior, retailer discounts, panel finish, or comparisons with TCL’s higher-tier models. It also made sense for anyone who already owned good audio equipment, since the bundled soundbar would have had less practical value.

What happened to TCL’s 2025 lineup?

The QM6K was not TCL’s top 2025 U.S. television. TCL followed it with the higher-tier QM7K in March and QM8K in May. TCL’s QM7K announcement and the QM8K announcement establish that broader sequence.

That matters for current buyers. The QM6K can still be attractive if its verified current price is low enough, but shoppers seeking the newest TCL picture technology should compare it with newer generations rather than treating a 2025 model as a current flagship.

Buying checks for a used or discounted QM6K

  1. Confirm the exact model number. Retailer and regional variants may differ in coating, accessories, warranty, or packaging.
  2. Check the current price. Do not compare a 2026 listing with the January 2025 MSRP without recording the date and retailer.
  3. Inspect the return policy. Large TVs are expensive to ship back, and retailer rules for panel defects vary.
  4. Check the HDMI layout. The tested 75-inch model had two HDMI 2.1 ports and two HDMI 2.0 ports; confirm the specification for the exact size and variant.
  5. Evaluate the room. Direct light, reflections, and seating angle can matter more than the headline refresh rate.
  6. Budget for audio if needed. The built-in Onkyo system is more substantial than basic TV speakers, but independent reviews still found reasons to use external audio.
