Yes, you may be able to claim an adult as a dependent on your 2025 federal tax return. The answer depends on whether the person meets the IRS rules for a qualifying child or a qualifying relative—not simply on their age or whether you help pay their bills. These rules apply to federal returns for tax year 2025, generally filed in 2026; state rules may differ.

First, identify which dependency test applies

The IRS recognizes two routes. An adult child may still meet the qualifying-child tests, while a person of any age may meet the qualifying-relative tests. The tests are different, especially when it comes to age and support.

Rule Qualifying child Qualifying relative
Age Generally under 19 at year end, or under 24 if a full-time student; a permanently and totally disabled person may meet the age test at any age. No age limit.
Relationship or residence Must meet the qualifying-child relationship test, which includes a child and certain siblings or their descendants, and generally must have lived with you for more than half the year. Must meet the IRS relationship test or live with you all year as a member of your household.
Whose support is measured? The person must not have provided more than half of their own support. You generally must have provided more than half of the person’s total support.
Gross-income limit The qualifying-relative gross-income ceiling does not apply. For 2025, the person’s gross income must be less than $5,200.
Other key restrictions Joint-return, residency, and competing-claim rules may affect eligibility. The person cannot be the qualifying child of you or another taxpayer; other restrictions, including multiple-support rules, may apply.

IRS Publication 501 (2025) explains the full tests and exceptions. The IRS states: “You can’t claim a person as a dependent unless that person is your qualifying child or qualifying relative.”

When an adult child may be your qualifying child

Evaluate an adult child under the qualifying-child rules before assuming they must qualify as a relative. The person generally must be your child or another qualifying relation, meet the age or disability test, have lived with you for more than half the year, and not have paid more than half of their own support.

Age, student status, and disability

  • At the end of 2025, the person generally must be under 19 and younger than you, or younger than your spouse if you file jointly.
  • A person under 24 may meet the age test if they were a full-time student and younger than you or your spouse filing jointly.
  • A person who is permanently and totally disabled may meet the age test at any age, subject to the other qualifying-child requirements.

These are age-test rules, not a general rule that every adult child qualifies. The remaining requirements still matter.

Residence, support, and joint returns

The qualifying-child generally must have lived with you for more than half of the year. Special residency rules can affect particular situations, including separated parents. For support, the question is whether the person provided more than half of their own support—not whether you paid most of their expenses. The person generally cannot file a joint return, except in the limited case where the joint return is filed only to claim a refund and neither spouse would owe tax on separate returns.

When more than one taxpayer could claim the same qualifying child, IRS tie-breaker rules determine who may do so. Check Publication 501 for the rules that fit the household and custody facts.

When an adult may qualify as your qualifying relative

A qualifying relative can be any age, but must pass all four tests below. For tax year 2025, this is the route where the $5,200 gross-income limit applies: the person’s gross income must be less than $5,200.

  1. Not another taxpayer’s qualifying child: The person cannot be your qualifying child or the qualifying child of any other taxpayer.
  2. Relationship or household: The person must meet the IRS relationship test, or live with you all year as a member of your household.
  3. Gross income: The person’s gross income for 2025 must be less than $5,200.
  4. Your support: You generally must have provided more than half of the person’s total support for the year.

The $5,200 figure is a qualifying-relative limit for 2025, not a universal income cap for dependents. Do not apply it to someone being tested as a qualifying child.

What counts as support?

Support is broader than cash you hand someone. IRS Publication 501 describes what expenses and resources count and how to compare your contribution with support from all sources. A person’s own funds generally count as support when actually spent on their support; money they save is treated differently. If several people contribute, or a multiple-support arrangement may apply, use the publication’s specific rules rather than assuming the ordinary more-than-half test answers the question.

Common questions that need separate checks

Can I claim my 24-year-old?

Possibly. A 24-year-old does not meet the ordinary under-24 student age test for a qualifying child at year end, but may qualify as a qualifying child under the permanent-and-total-disability rule if the other tests are met. They may instead qualify as a qualifying relative if all four qualifying-relative tests are satisfied.

Can I claim a parent who receives Social Security?

Possibly, but receiving Social Security does not by itself settle dependency eligibility. The qualifying-relative income and support tests require applying the IRS rules to the person’s specific income and circumstances; benefit taxation and the dependency gross-income calculation are not interchangeable questions. Review Publication 501 or use the IRS Interactive Tax Assistant for the facts involved.

Does claiming someone mean they do not need to file a return?

No. Whether a person is your dependent and whether that person must file their own federal return are separate questions. Filing requirements depend on the individual’s income, age, filing status, and circumstances. Use the IRS filing rules for the person rather than treating dependent status as an exemption from filing.

Does claiming an adult dependent qualify me for a credit or a filing status?

Not automatically. Credits and filing statuses have their own eligibility requirements. Check the current IRS instructions for each benefit rather than inferring eligibility from dependent status alone.

How to report a dependent and verify your situation

The IRS instructions say to list dependents by name and identifying number in the Dependents section of Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR. If the facts do not fit the basic tests—for example, because of separated parents, multiple support, or a competing claim—consult the full 2025 IRS Publication 501 and the applicable form instructions. The IRS Interactive Tax Assistant can help with questions not resolved by the publication. This is a federal overview; check your state tax authority for state filing consequences.
