Re:

Tax and Other Consequences of Inheriting a POD Account

A POD beneficiary generally does not owe federal income tax on inherited account principal, but interest may be taxable to the decedent, estate, or beneficiary depending on timing and entitlement. State law and estate claims are separate issues.

In general, you do not owe federal income tax simply because you inherited the principal in a payable-on-death (POD) bank account. Interest is separate: who reports it depends on when it was earned or credited and who was entitled to it. Estate taxes, state taxes, creditor claims, and other consequences are separate questions that depend on the estate and governing state law.

Is inherited POD account money taxable income?

Generally, no—not for federal income-tax purposes merely because the account passed to you. The IRS states, “Property received as a gift, bequest, or inheritance isn’t included in your income.” (IRS Publication 559 (2025), Survivors, Executors, and Administrators.) This addresses the inherited principal; it does not settle tax on interest, estate tax, state inheritance tax, or claims against the estate.

This answer assumes the asset is a bank deposit account with a valid POD designation. An IRA, annuity, brokerage account, or other tax-favored asset may have different tax rules.

Who reports interest in an inherited bank account?

Interest is not the same as inherited principal. Its tax treatment depends on who was entitled to it and when it accrued or was credited. Interest attributable to the period before the owner’s death may belong on the decedent’s final federal income-tax return. Interest earned after death may belong to the estate or beneficiary, depending on the account terms and circumstances. The estate may have a Form 1041 filing obligation, and a beneficiary may receive a Schedule K-1 when applicable. (IRS Publication 559; IRS Instructions for Form 1041.)

A Form 1099-INT issued after the owner dies may combine interest attributable to more than one taxpayer. Do not assume that every amount on a form bearing your name is necessarily all yours to report. Ask the bank or other payer to correct the form or identify the proper recipient and amount where possible. If it cannot, follow the applicable IRS reporting instructions and keep records supporting your allocation.

Records to keep

  • The account agreement and POD designation.
  • Statements covering the period around the owner’s death and evidence of the date-of-death balance.
  • The date the bank transferred or paid the account, and any interest credited before and after death.
  • Forms 1099-INT, requests for corrected reporting, and responses from the bank.
  • Any estate tax reporting or Schedule K-1 supplied to you.

Does a step-up in basis apply to POD cash?

Usually, basis is not the main issue for a bank balance: receiving cash from a deposit account is not ordinarily a sale of inherited property. If an inheritance includes other property that is later sold, the general federal basis rule for inherited property is fair market value at the decedent’s date of death, subject to exceptions. An alternate valuation date may apply in qualifying estate-tax circumstances, and certain beneficiaries subject to consistent-basis reporting must use the estate-tax value reported on Schedule A to Form 8971. Special rules also apply in some cases, including appreciated property transferred to the decedent by the beneficiary or spouse within one year before death. (IRS Publication 551, Basis of Assets.)

What does a POD designation mean—and what does it not decide?

A POD designation is a bank instruction naming a beneficiary to receive funds after the account owner dies. The FDIC describes POD, Totten trust, ITF, and ATF accounts as informal revocable trust accounts created by a deposit agreement directing the bank to transfer funds to named beneficiaries at the owner’s death. (FDIC, “Are My Deposit Accounts Insured by the FDIC?”.)

That description concerns deposit-insurance classification; it is not a nationwide ruling on probate administration, ownership disputes, or creditor rights. State law and the actual account terms can matter. For example, North Carolina law provides that a beneficiary has no ownership interest before the last owner dies, and describes circumstances in which a personal representative may collect funds even after a bank has paid a beneficiary. This is a state-specific example, not a rule for every state. (North Carolina General Statutes § 41-2.1.)

Depending on the state and the facts, questions may also arise about spouse rights, estate debts, creditor claims, or Medicaid recovery. The account’s location, the decedent’s domicile, the governing agreement, and applicable state law should be checked before concluding that a POD transfer is beyond every estate claim.

How are estate tax and deposit insurance different?

Estate income tax and estate tax are distinct from your income tax on inherited principal. A domestic estate or trust may need to file Form 1041 when it has reportable income, deductions, gains, losses, or tax liability. Whether federal estate tax, state estate or inheritance tax, or another state consequence applies cannot be determined from the fact that an account is POD; it depends on the estate’s value, domicile, assets, and governing law. FDIC deposit insurance is also separate from tax. Eligible POD deposits are classified as trust accounts for insurance purposes. FDIC rules include a six-month post-death grace period for coverage under specified conditions; that is a deposit-insurance rule, not an inheritance-tax exemption. Consult the FDIC’s current guidance if coverage limits or management of large deposits after transfer are relevant. (FDIC, “Are My Deposit Accounts Insured by the FDIC?”.)

What to check when you receive a POD account

  1. Confirm the asset and designation. Check that it is a bank deposit account and obtain the executed account agreement or other confirmation of the POD beneficiary designation.
  2. Reconcile the balance and interest. Compare statements and the date-of-death balance with interest credited before and after death, and note when the bank paid or transferred the funds.
  3. Review tax forms. Check who is named on each Form 1099-INT and whether it appears to combine amounts attributable to the decedent, estate, or beneficiary.
  4. Ask the payer to correct reporting if needed. Provide the estate’s or beneficiary’s taxpayer identification number when appropriate, and request a form that identifies the proper recipient and amount.
  5. Check estate and state issues separately. Determine whether the estate has a Form 1041 or estate-tax filing issue and whether state law or potential claims affect the transfer.
