The company credits higher output at its Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar facilities. The figures are provisional, and they measure volume, not profit.
What Tata Steel reported for Q2 FY27
The headline numbers come from Tata Steel’s own announcement, Tata Steel: 2QFY2027 Production and Delivery Volumes (Provisional), published October 7, 2026. The same announcement appears on the company’s stock exchange releases page. Figures are stated in million tons, as the company presents them.

On the India figures, the company states the following growth rates: Q2 production up 10% year on year, and first-half production up 10% to 11.97 million tons. Q2 deliveries are stated as up 7% year on year, and first-half deliveries up 8% to 11.14 million tons. The company’s growth rates are its own calculations from unrounded numbers. Working from the rounded table values, Q2 deliveries look closer to 8% (5.97 against 5.55), so the stated 7% is best read as the company’s figure rather than a check you can reproduce exactly.
Why output rose, and what the company does not say
Tata Steel attributes the increase primarily to higher output at its Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar facilities. The release says: “Crude steel production was up 8% QoQ and 10% YoY, primarily driven by higher output at Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar facilities.” It does not split the 0.45 million ton year-on-year gain between the two plants, so the relative contribution of each cannot be determined from this announcement.

The release also does not disclose prices, costs, revenue, margins or profit. Those items appear in the company’s separate financial results, which are a different document from a volume update.
Production and deliveries are different measures
Production counts steel made; deliveries count steel shipped to customers. The two can diverge in any quarter because of inventory timing, so a rise in one does not automatically mean the other moved the same way.

In Q2 FY27 both rose. India deliveries were 5.97 million tons, up 7% year on year and 15% quarter on quarter. Tata Steel says an enriched product mix and stable demand across market segments supported deliveries despite seasonal rains. The company does not quantify the mix effect. Its domestic delivery highlights also show roughly 1.1 million tons for Automotive & Special Products and roughly 2.2 million tons for Branded Products & Retail. Those segment figures are delivery highlights, not production totals, and they do not add up to the full India delivery number.
Reconciling the Q1 FY27 numbers
Readers comparing releases will find two different Q1 FY27 India production figures. Tata Steel’s 1Q FY2027 Production and Delivery Volumes (Provisional) release of July 8, 2026 reported 5.82 million tons of India crude steel production for Q1 FY27 and 5.23 million tons for Q1 FY26. The Q2 release’s comparison table shows Q1 FY27 at 5.76 million tons.

For the quarter-on-quarter change in Q2, use the 5.76 figure from the Q2 table. It is the comparison Tata Steel uses in its latest release, and it is consistent with the first-half total: 5.76 plus 6.21 equals 11.97 million tons. The 0.06 million ton gap from the earlier 5.82 figure is not explained in the Q2 announcement. Quote the Q1 figure from the July release only as the figure first published for that quarter.
Comparing India with other Tata Steel geographies
The table includes the Netherlands, Thailand and the UK, but the measures differ. The release describes India as crude steel production, the Netherlands as liquid steel production and Thailand as saleable steel production. Those are not interchangeable, so comparing a Netherlands production figure with the India figure would mislead. The UK line gives only deliveries.

Within the table, Netherlands production and deliveries both fell year on year in Q2 (1.52 against 1.67 for production, 1.30 against 1.54 for deliveries). Thailand was roughly flat to lower. The UK deliveries figure fell from 0.57 to 0.38 million tons. The release gives no reasons for these non-India movements.

- It shows volume. Higher tonnage at the India operations in Q2 FY27 is confirmed by the company’s own provisional figures.
- It does not show profitability. Steel prices, input costs and margins are outside this release.
- It is company-reported. The numbers are not independently audited in the cited release and should not be presented as Indian steel output overall.
- It is not a peer comparison. The release contains no data on other producers.
- It is provisional. The Q2 and first-half FY27 figures may be revised in later reporting.

How to cite these figures
- Attribute the India production figure to Tata Steel and keep the word “provisional” for the Q2 FY27 number.
- State the unit as “million tons,” the term the company uses, rather than converting it silently to metric tonnes.
- Name the scope: Tata Steel India includes Tata Steel Standalone and Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd on a pro forma basis, according to the release.
- Use the Q2 release’s table for Q2 comparisons, and label any Q1 figure with the release it came from.
