The Target boycott has not had one agreed ending. Minnesota organizers Nekima Levy Armstrong, Monique Cullars-Doty and Jaylani Hussein say their boycott remains indefinite. A separate campaign led by Rev. Jamal Bryant announced on March 11, 2026, that its Target Fast chapter was concluding. The AFL-CIO later adopted a related boycott with different demands. The latest cited update, an Associated Press report published August 25, 2026, quoted Armstrong saying the Minnesota boycott never ended.
Why did organizers call for a Target boycott?
Target announced in January 2025 that it was scaling back some diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. The Minnesota Star Tribune’s March 11, 2026 report said the company planned to stop participating in external DEI surveys and shift supplier-diversity programming toward “supplier engagement.” The change came amid wider pressure on corporate DEI programs after Donald Trump returned to the White House.

Organizers and customers objected in part because Target had made public commitments after George Floyd’s murder in 2020. A national boycott campaign began in February 2025, but different leaders and groups later described different goals and outcomes. That is why the status depends on which campaign you mean.
Which Target boycott campaigns are still active?
The campaigns below are related, but they have different leadership, demands and status claims. The Minnesota organizers’ indefinite action should not be confused with the conclusion of Bryant’s Target Fast chapter or with the AFL-CIO’s later resolution.

| Campaign or group | Leadership and timing | Main demands or measure of progress | Status stated by its organizers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minnesota organizers’ boycott | Nekima Levy Armstrong, Monique Cullars-Doty and Jaylani Hussein; the national campaign began in February 2025. | Opposition to Target’s DEI pullback; organizers said the boycott would continue unless Target reversed course. | Armstrong said in an August 25, 2026 AP report that it “never ended” and had been indefinite from the beginning. Associated Press, August 25, 2026. |
| Target Fast | A separate faith-led campaign led by Rev. Jamal Bryant, Turner and Mallory; its leaders announced a conclusion on March 11, 2026. | Leaders cited progress on Target’s existing commitment to invest $2 billion in Black-owned businesses. Bryant said three of four demands had been met or would be met by Easter; the reported unmet goal was a relationship with a Black-owned bank. | Bryant said, “We are claiming victory.” That was his group’s announcement, not a declaration accepted by every boycott organizer. Minnesota Star Tribune, March 11, 2026. |
| AFT and Minnesota community action adopted by the AFL-CIO | The AFL-CIO adopted Resolution 33 on June 8, 2026, taking up a related boycott. | Members and allies were urged to shop locally and avoid Target for back-to-school and other school-related purchases until Target publicly called for an end to aggressive ICE enforcement and occupation in Minnesota and signed the Business for Democracy Pledge. | The resolution describes these as changed demands after the March 11 partial resolution concerning DEI and Black-business investment. It is a distinct campaign with a different demand set. AFL-CIO Resolution 33, June 8, 2026. |
Why did one group say the boycott was over while others disagreed?
The disagreement centered on what counted as progress. Bryant’s group said Target would complete its earlier $2 billion commitment to Black-owned businesses in 2026, including by adding Black-owned brands and increasing spending with Black-owned marketing and construction businesses. The Star Tribune reported that Target had previously announced the conclusion of the program without confirming whether it had reached the goal, and that it now planned to complete the commitment in 2026.
Target characterized the $2 billion pledge as an existing commitment, not a new concession resulting from the campaign. Axios reported the company’s position that talks had not caused it to reverse or reinstate policies. Target also said, “Target is more committed than ever to creating growth and opportunity for all.” These are company statements, not evidence that its earlier DEI policies were restored. Axios, March 11, 2026.

Minnesota organizers rejected the idea that Bryant’s announcement ended the broader movement because, in their view, the boycott’s goals had not been met. Armstrong told WEAA/NPR on March 12, “We are still boycotting Target.” The two groups’ claims can coexist: one campaign chapter concluded on its own terms while another said its action continued. WEAA / NPR, March 12, 2026.

- $2 billion: Target’s 2021 commitment to Black-owned businesses, as reported by the Star Tribune in 2026. Target described it as an existing commitment that it planned to complete in 2026, not a new pledge created by the boycott.
- 300,000 participants: Bryant’s claim at the March 11, 2026 news conference, reported by the Star Tribune. The report said he did not explain how the organizers arrived at the figure, so it is not an independently verified count.
- 15 million members: The AFL-CIO’s stated membership in its June 8, 2026 resolution. It describes the federation’s reach, not the number of members who took part in the boycott.
- $12 billion and 9.3%: The Star Tribune reported Bryant’s February claim that the boycott cost Target $12 billion and that both foot traffic and digital sales were down 9.3%. Those are attributed claims, not proof that the boycott alone caused the reported changes. AP’s August coverage discussed Target’s business recovery and stock moves as part of a broader company turnaround.
What does this mean if you shop at Target?
If you are deciding whether to participate, first identify which organizers’ goals you support: the Minnesota campaign focused on Target’s DEI pullback; the AFL-CIO resolution called for action on immigration enforcement in Minnesota and the Business for Democracy Pledge. The campaigns’ stated conditions are not interchangeable.
For the AFL-CIO action, the resolution asks members and allies to shop locally for school-related purchases and avoid Target until its stated conditions are met. That is a consumer choice, not a financial rule. If switching stores would strain your budget, compare prices and availability before changing where you shop; the cited resolution does not establish that local alternatives will cost less.

For the broader status question, the latest cited public position from the Minnesota organizers is Armstrong’s August 25, 2026 statement to AP that the boycott was still indefinite. That does not establish that every person who joined the 2025 campaign remains involved, or that all groups share the same demands.
