Tandem: A Couples Finance App for Sharing Some Expenses, Not All Finances

Tandem helps couples coordinate selected bills and goals without combining all their spending. Here’s how its sharing model works and what to verify about price and availability.

Tandem is designed for couples who want to coordinate shared bills and goals without opening a joint bank account or merging all their spending. Its reported setup lets partners link cards, choose which transactions to share, and organize shared costs and savings plans—while retaining control over their separate finances.

What Tandem does for couples

Tandem’s premise is a middle ground between fully separate finances and combining everything in one account. TechCrunch reported that one partner creates an account and invites the other. Each partner can connect credit or debit cards, then choose which transactions the other person can see. The app is intended to make selected spending visible without exposing every purchase.

Co-founder Michelle Winterfield described the idea to TechCrunch as giving couples “the experience of a joint account without actually having to have one.” That is a description of the intended experience, not a claim that Tandem is itself a bank account.

How shared expenses and goals work

Share selected transactions

Partners can link cards and select transactions to share, according to TechCrunch’s January 2024 account of the product. That selective approach may suit couples who want to coordinate household spending while keeping other purchases private. The available sources do not establish the full range of linked financial institutions or how transaction feeds work in every region.

Set aside money for shared bills

TechCrunch reported that couples could direct automated transfers into a shared expense pot for costs such as rent or subscriptions, then settle balances when ready. This is a way to coordinate contributions; it should not be confused with opening a jointly owned bank account. Confirm the current app’s transfer, settlement, and account-linking details before relying on them for recurring bills.

Plan a shared purchase

Tandem’s Goals feature was described as a way for partners to set a shared purchase target and plan monthly contributions. The company’s product page also describes expense splitting, spending tracking, purchase planning, and coordination of daily tasks. Features and availability can change, so check the live app listing and product information for the version available to you.

What the 2024 numbers and price actually mean

In its January 17, 2024 report, TechCrunch said Tandem had more than 25,000 couples using the app and had managed $60 million in expenses. These are figures reported at that time, not verified current totals or independently audited measures. The same report said Tandem raised $3.7 million in a round led by Corazon Capital.

TechCrunch also reported launch-era pricing for Goals of $10 per couple per month with annual billing or $12 per couple per month with monthly billing. Those are historical announced prices, not a statement of today’s rates. The US App Store listing accessed October 8, 2026 displays multiple in-app subscription prices; check the listing for your region for current pricing and billing terms.

Availability and what to verify before signing up

Tandem’s product site describes downloads for iOS and Android. The US App Store listing for Tandem – Living Together identifies Ride in Tandem, Inc. as the developer, lists the product as a finance app for iPhone, and specifies iOS 17 or later. These sources do not establish identical platform availability or pricing in every country. Verify the live listing in your region, and make sure it is the couples finance app rather than another app named Tandem.

  • Check whether the app is available for your phone and country.
  • Review which banks and cards can be connected, and what happens when a feed stops updating.
  • Confirm how shared transfers and balance settlement work before using the app for rent or other essential bills.
  • Review current subscription price, billing frequency, and cancellation terms in the local store listing.

How Tandem compares with other ways to manage money as a couple

Tandem is one option in a broader category, not the only way to coordinate shared money. TechCrunch named Plenty, Honeydue, Zeta, and Ivella as services serving related couples-finance needs. Its 2024 coverage contrasted Tandem’s emphasis on sharing transactions and retaining existing financial products with competitors it said often focus on a shared debit card. That is a dated characterization, not a complete feature audit of those services today.

Tiller takes a different approach: its couples use case centers on collaborative spreadsheets, transaction imports, and customizable sharing for couples who may pool everything or keep some finances separate. A spreadsheet-based workflow can offer more flexibility, but it is a different model from using a dedicated app to coordinate expenses.

What to compare Why it matters
Joint account or card requirement Determine whether the tool works with the accounts you already use or requires a new shared financial product.
Privacy controls Check whether each partner can decide what spending is visible, and whether that control applies transaction by transaction.
Feeds and expense settlement Look for account connections, expense splitting, transfer options, and a clear way to settle balances.
Budgeting and shared goals Compare support for recurring bills, savings targets, and purchase planning—not just transaction visibility.
Platform and cost Confirm compatible devices, local availability, subscription price, and billing terms in current listings.

Choose based on the amount of visibility and automation you both want. If the main need is to divide a few household costs while keeping personal spending separate, prioritize transaction-level privacy and simple settlement. If you want a shared card or a highly customizable record, compare alternatives against those specific needs rather than assuming every couples app works the same way.
