The Coimbatore District Administration says Tamil Nadu’s scheme is intended to honour motherhood, celebrate childbirth, encourage deliveries in government hospitals and strengthen trust in government medical institutions. Its notice states that a one-gram gold ring is provided for every baby born alive in a government hospital or primary health centre from 22 June 2026, 12 noon onward. Indian Express reporting describes the ring as one gram and 22-carat. It says the mother must be a Tamil Nadu resident registered in PICME and have an RCH ID, and that babies born in government health institutions are eligible regardless of sex. The report says no separate application is needed: hospital staff verify delivery records, PICME registration, the RCH ID and residency before handover. When the 22-carat rate rises or falls, the gold component of government procurement can rise or fall as well. The available reporting does not establish the exact rate date used for each purchase, the invoice calculation, or whether a price-lock arrangement applies. It therefore supports the direction of the effect, not a precise calculation of the government’s cost per ring.
That does not change the family’s stated benefit
Reports describe the benefit as a ring provided to eligible families, not a cash amount tied to the day’s gold rate. No reviewed source says families must pay the difference when market prices rise. The evidence supports a distinction between the government’s variable procurement cost and the beneficiary’s stated entitlement; it does not establish every local handover procedure.

What the ₹0.01 tender figure means
DT Next’s procurement report and fact-check coverage say the ₹0.01 figure was a bid for ancillary services and excluded the actual gold price. It is therefore inaccurate to say the government bought a one-gram gold ring, including its gold, for one paisa. Who receives a ring, and when
The official notice sets the qualifying birth threshold at 22 June 2026, 12 noon, for babies born alive in government hospitals and primary health centres. The 28 September 2026 date is the statewide distribution inauguration—not the start date for qualifying births.
