Tala announced a $145 million Series E on October 14, 2021, to move beyond mobile lending toward a broader financial-account experience. The round was led by Upstart, with participation from the Stellar Development Foundation and other new and existing investors. Tala said it planned to use the money to develop borrowing, saving, money management, payments, more tailored credit and crypto offerings; those were announced goals, not confirmation that every service was available in every country.

What Tala announced in the 2021 funding round

Tala’s October 14, 2021 announcement described the financing as a $145 million Series E. Upstart led the round, and the Stellar Development Foundation participated. New investors included Kindred Ventures and J. Safra Group; existing investors named by Tala included IVP, Revolution Growth, Lowercase Capital and PayPal Ventures. Tala also said Upstart co-founder Paul Gu and Stellar Development Foundation CEO and Executive Director Denelle Dixon joined its board. Tala’s announcement

The $145 million refers to the new round, not the company’s lifetime fundraising. Tala said the round brought its total funding to more than $350 million. TechCrunch reported a little over $360 million, and the two published totals are not reconciled in the available accounts. TechCrunch’s October 2021 report

How Tala said it would use the money

The central ambition was to extend Tala’s app-based credit business into a more complete financial account. The company said it would develop ways for customers to borrow, save and manage money, alongside payments and savings features. It also described longer-term credit and products designed around customers’ income cycles, geographic expansion, and crypto development using Stellar. These plans explain the purpose Tala gave for the raise; they should not be read as a 2021 feature list available to all customers.

Founder and CEO Shivani Siroya said the investment would speed the company’s effort to become a “primary financial account” for underbanked customers. In an interview with TechCrunch, she likewise characterized the move as going beyond lending toward a full financial account across Tala’s markets. Those statements set out the company’s strategy, rather than an independent assessment of its impact. Tala’s announcement · TechCrunch interview

What the later milestones show—and what they do not

Tala’s figures and product descriptions have changed since the funding announcement. The milestones below are company-reported and belong to their stated dates; they should not be treated as independently audited totals or as evidence that every feature was offered in every market.

When What Tala reported How to interpret it
October 2021 More than $2.7 billion in credit delivered to more than 6 million customers in Kenya, the Philippines, Mexico and India; more than 12,000 user sign-ups per day. Historical Tala-reported operating figures at the time of the Series E announcement. Source
November 14, 2024 10 million customers across East Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia, and nearly $6 billion in credit disbursed since inception. Tala’s reported milestone as of its 2024 announcement, not a current total. Source
April and October 2024 Tala said it established a $48.5 million loan-channeling partnership with Maya Bank in the Philippines in April and launched its first self-custody crypto wallet in Latin America in October. Company-reported developments; a loan-channeling partnership is not the same as a consumer savings or deposit account. Source
Current company website, accessed October 8, 2026 Tala describes more than $10 billion in credit access delivered and a data engine trained on more than $10 billion in lending-performance data across 15 million customers. What Tala describes as its current offering

Tala’s current website presents the company both as an app-based financial-services provider and as AI-native credit infrastructure. Its consumer-facing descriptions include instant credit lines, transfers between digital wallets, cash-out and a crypto-enabled digital wallet. The site’s market links list Kenya, Mexico, the Philippines, India, Vietnam, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and Central America. These descriptions do not establish that each service is available throughout every listed market, or on the same terms in each one. Tala’s current website

The distinction matters when assessing what the 2021 raise achieved: the funding announcement documented a plan to broaden the customer account, while later company announcements and the current site describe subsequent milestones and products. The site’s scale claims are not a substitute for market-specific eligibility, fees, repayment terms or product disclosures; customers need to check the terms presented in their own app and location.

What the funding story means for customers

The raise signaled an effort to use mobile technology and credit data as a starting point for a broader set of financial services in markets where traditional financial access can be limited. It did not, by itself, guarantee savings access, payments, crypto, or any particular credit product for a given customer. Availability, applicable terms and regulatory conditions depend on the service and country; the company’s announcements do not provide a complete market-by-market schedule.
