Yes—but the date and wording matter. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s largest contract semiconductor manufacturer, briefly crossed a US$1 trillion market capitalization in July 2024 as its U.S.-listed ADRs reached a record US$192.79. The move came during the artificial-intelligence investment surge, when investors raised their expectations for advanced-chip demand.

This was a stock-market valuation milestone, not US$1 trillion in sales, cash, factories, or profit. TSMC’s valuation later moved much higher: its investor-relations data showed approximately NT$65.8 trillion, or US$2.1 trillion, at June 30, 2026.

What happened in July 2024?

TSMC’s American depositary receipts (ADR) rallied to a record US$192.79 in July 2024. Reuters reported that the rise had briefly pushed the company into the group of businesses valued at more than US$1 trillion, amid surging demand expectations for chips used in artificial-intelligence systems.

The careful description is “briefly crossed” or “briefly entered the trillion-dollar club.” Market capitalization changes continuously with the share price, shares outstanding and exchange rates. A headline about a threshold crossing does not establish that TSMC closed every session above US$1 trillion or remained there permanently. Reuters’ July 11 coverage said the record ADR price followed a crossing earlier that week; it did not establish July 11 as the first qualifying session. Reuters coverage of the July 2024 milestone

The event was notable because it made an Asian technology manufacturer one of a relatively small number of companies to reach that valuation level. It also illustrated how strongly financial markets were linking TSMC to the AI build-out.

What does a US$1 trillion market capitalization mean?

Market capitalization = current share price × total shares outstanding. It is the market’s changing estimate of the equity value of a publicly traded company.

For TSMC, the measurement is less straightforward than simply multiplying the ADR quote by a headline share count:

  • Ordinary shares trade in Taiwan in New Taiwan dollars under ticker 2330.
  • ADRs trade in the United States in dollars under ticker TSM and represent underlying Taiwan shares through a conversion ratio.
  • The NT dollar–U.S. dollar exchange rate changes the dollar value of Taiwan-listed equity.
  • Vendors may use different share counts and different intraday or closing times.
  • Taiwan and U.S. markets operate at different hours, so ADR and Taiwan prices can temporarily diverge.

Consequently, a reported figure should identify its date, currency, source and whether it is intraday or a closing value. Market capitalization is not annual revenue, net income, the book value of factories, money in TSMC’s bank accounts, or necessarily the price an acquirer would pay for the whole business. Enterprise value, which also considers debt and cash, is a different measure.

Why did investors bid TSMC higher?

AI accelerator and data-center demand

TSMC manufactures advanced processors and related components for customers including Nvidia and Apple. The AI infrastructure boom increased expectations for high-end logic chips, high-bandwidth computing and advanced packaging. Reuters described AI demand as the central market explanation for the 2024 rally and later reported that AI demand was still driving record results in 2026. Better earnings expectations

Investors expected AI-related orders to offset weakness in portions of the smartphone, PC and other consumer-electronics markets. TSMC’s second-quarter 2024 outlook and results supported the share-price advance. Reuters on TSMC’s 2024 second-quarter performance

Foundry leadership

TSMC is a pure-play semiconductor foundry: customers design chips, and TSMC manufactures them. That model gives the company exposure to several leading designers instead of tying its fortunes to one branded processor line. Its process technology, manufacturing scale and yields are difficult for rivals to reproduce quickly.

Advanced nodes and packaging

Investors also placed a premium on TSMC’s 3-nanometer production and expected 2-nanometer technology, along with expanded advanced-packaging capacity. TSMC’s 2024 annual report describes investment in advanced technology and packaging. TSMC 2024 Annual Report (PDF)

Scarcity and pricing expectations

Leading-edge foundry capacity and advanced packaging were viewed as constrained resources. Analysts and investors interpreted that scarcity as potential support for utilization, pricing and future cash flow. Those are market expectations, not guarantees: capacity additions, customer negotiations and technology transitions can change the outcome.

TSMC’s business results versus its valuation

The financial statements show why a US$1 trillion market capitalization should not be confused with a trillion dollars of business activity. TSMC’s 2024 annual report recorded the following:

Measure 2024 result What it shows
Consolidated revenue Approximately US$90.08 billion Annual sales, not market value
Net income Approximately US$36.52 billion Annual profit attributable to the company
Net income in Taiwan dollars Approximately NT$1,173.27 billion Same profit reported in the company’s reporting currency
Diluted earnings per share NT$45.25 Profit allocated per diluted ordinary share

Later operating data showed the business continuing to grow. TSMC reported June 2026 consolidated revenue of approximately NT$442.68 billion, up 67.9% from June 2025. TSMC June 2026 revenue filing Reuters separately reported second-quarter 2026 revenue up about 36% year over year to a record level. A strong result can still disappoint shareholders if the market had already priced in an even stronger result.

Why TSMC matters beyond its stock price

TSMC’s plants make chips used in smartphones, data centers, AI accelerators, high-performance computers, automobiles and industrial equipment. Nvidia designs its AI processors; TSMC manufactures chips designed by Nvidia and other customers. Keeping that distinction clear is important when assessing who captures value in the supply chain.

Advanced semiconductor production is heavily concentrated in Taiwan, giving both TSMC and Taiwan an outsized role in global technology. Governments in the United States, Japan, Germany and elsewhere have encouraged geographic diversification. New overseas fabs may improve resilience and political access, but they also require substantial capital, local supply chains and specialized labor. They diversify production without eliminating Taiwan-related operational or geopolitical exposure.

Risks behind a trillion-dollar valuation

AI spending and concentration

If data-center and AI infrastructure spending slows, is delayed or produces lower returns, expectations for advanced chips could fall. TSMC serves powerful customers whose product cycles and negotiating leverage can affect orders and pricing.

Semiconductor cycles

AI strength does not remove downturn risk in smartphones, PCs, automobiles, industrial electronics or memory-related markets. Utilization and prices can weaken quickly when inventories build.

Geopolitics and export controls

TSMC remains headquartered and primarily based in Taiwan, exposing it to cross-strait tensions and changing U.S.-China technology restrictions. Overseas capacity can reduce some supply-chain concentration but cannot guarantee continuity in a severe disruption.

Capital spending and execution

Building fabs outside Taiwan can raise costs and create construction, staffing, yield and logistics challenges. A technology roadmap also carries execution risk if a new process or packaging method takes longer or costs more than expected.

Currency and valuation risk

A U.S.-dollar market-cap figure can move because of both TSMC’s Taiwan share price and exchange rates. The share price also reflects discounted expectations about future cash flows. Even excellent earnings can be followed by a decline if they fall short of an already-high valuation.

What happened after the original milestone?

The July 2024 crossing was an early point in a larger revaluation, not a permanent label. TSMC’s investor-relations page listed market capitalization at approximately NT$65.8 trillion (US$2.1 trillion) on June 30, 2026. TSMC market-capitalization data

A July 13, 2026 Reuters report cited approximately US$1.955 trillion. These numbers are not necessarily contradictory: they use different dates, exchange rates, share-price observations and potentially different intraday or closing conventions. Comparisons should always preserve those qualifications.

What the milestone does—and does not—tell an investor

Crossing US$1 trillion demonstrates that investors assigned a very large value to TSMC’s expected future earnings and its manufacturing position in the AI supply chain. It does not, by itself, show that the shares are cheap, that AI spending will continue at the same pace, or that geopolitical and semiconductor-cycle risks have disappeared.

Someone considering exposure should distinguish a concentrated TSMC ADR from a diversified semiconductor fund. A single ADR provides direct company exposure, while funds such as VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH), iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) and SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) spread holdings across foundries, designers, equipment makers and other semiconductor companies. Holdings, concentration, fees, liquidity, tax treatment and availability must be checked on each official product page at the time of purchase.

Brokerages including Fidelity, Charles Schwab and Interactive Brokers differ in access to ADRs, Taiwan-listed shares, foreign exchange, international trading, fees and eligibility. The appropriate choice depends on the investor’s country, account type and tolerance for company-specific, currency and geopolitical risk.
