TAGPod was reported as a bulk-food dispensing system piloted at an Ottawa grocery store in 2022. Its proposed convenience: shoppers could fill their own containers and have the dispenser measure the purchase, avoiding the usual step of weighing an empty container first. Current installation and availability are not confirmed by the sources cited here.
How was TAGPod supposed to work?
In a March 2022 account, Treehugger described a dispenser with an internal scale for each food item. The shopper would use an RFID card to activate the dispenser, place an open container underneath, and hold a button to release product. The shopper could stop when the screen showed the desired quantity or dollar amount. As TAG founder and CEO Jennifer Look-Hong put it, “Press and hold until the screen shows the quantity or dollar amount that the consumer would like.”
After dispensing, the customer would tap the card at a kiosk, which printed a receipt to take to the cashier. The first reported pilot was at Natural Food Pantry in Ottawa. The company’s March 24, 2022 launch announcement described the project as a pilot.
Do you still have to weigh your container?
The workflow described by Treehugger was intended to avoid manually weighing an empty container before filling it. The dispenser’s internal scale measured the product dispensed, and the kiosk produced a receipt. That is the reported design rationale, not proof of a measured time saving or a guarantee that every store using a bulk system will handle container weights this way.

Look-Hong said eliminating the tare step would save time for customers and retailers, who otherwise weigh a container before filling and weigh it again afterward. That is the founder’s stated expectation; the available sources do not report independent tests of checkout time, retailer costs, or customer experience.
Can you bring your own container for bulk food?
TAGPod’s reported flow was built around shoppers filling their own containers. The source does not establish a required brand, material, or size, or list containers tested with the system. Check the retailer’s current bulk-food and container policies before bringing one.

The company also described reusable cartridges for suppliers as part of its intended supply-chain design. The sources do not establish how many cartridges were used, how often they were reused, or how much waste the system avoided.
How is TAGPod different from ordinary bulk bins?
Conventional open-bin setups generally leave shoppers to manage the scoop-and-container process and follow the retailer’s weighing and checkout procedure. TAGPod’s reported model instead used RFID activation, dispensing from a dedicated unit, internal measurement, and a kiosk receipt. A gravity-fed refill display is another distinct format: it holds dispensers for customers to use but is not the same system as TAGPod.

For a retailer comparing options, the practical questions are how product is dispensed and measured, how customers pay, what cleaning and food-hygiene routines are required, which products the equipment accepts, how refills are delivered, how much floor space the setup uses, and how easy the process is for customers. No head-to-head measurements establish that TAGPod or another format is faster, cleaner, or less wasteful.

Current availability is unresolved. The 2022 launch announcement and Treehugger’s report describe a pilot at Natural Food Pantry, followed by plans for further development and outreach to independent grocers and retailers. Those plans do not confirm that expansion happened.

Natural Food Pantry’s current FAQ says bulk foods are not available online and directs customers to its Ottawa stores. Its locations page lists five Ottawa locations. Neither page mentions TAGPod, so these pages do not establish whether it remains installed or whether other retailers can obtain it.
For a separate example of a bulk-food fixture, Luminati lists a gravity-fed refill station stand with removable dispensers for dry foods. It is not TAGPod and is not evidence of compatibility. Retailers should verify current availability, price, shipping area, and suitability with the vendor.
