The offer has meaningful restrictions, and it will not offset T-Mobile’s scheduled October 12, 2026 increase to its monthly Regulatory Programs and Telco Recovery charge. For voice lines, that fee rises by $1 per line per month, on top of plan prices, taxes and other applicable charges.
What T-Mobile’s third-line offer actually gives you
T-Mobile’s current offer is “Get a third line free” on Essentials 2.0 when you activate two new Essentials lines. The advertised plan price is $30 per line per month with AutoPay, plus taxes and fees. The third-line discount comes as monthly bill credits, not as cash back or an upfront price reduction. T-Mobile says credits may take up to two billing cycles to appear. T-Mobile’s offer terms
The offer is limited-time and subject to change. The published terms require a qualifying new account, qualifying credit and an eligible plan at regular rates; eligibility is limited to one account. Because the terms require a new account, an existing customer should not assume they can add a free line on the same basis. Confirm the exact offer and account eligibility with T-Mobile before switching or opening an account.
What can end or limit the credits
- Canceling any voice line or changing plans stops the promotional credits.
- The offer may not combine with other offers, discounts or Price Lock.
- A $35 device connection charge is due at sale.
- Taxes, government-required taxes and fees, and the plan’s additional carrier fees apply.
These terms make “almost no catches” an overly generous description: the offer can be valuable, but only if you qualify and keep the required account and plan conditions.

Essentials trade-offs
The low advertised plan price comes with service limitations. T-Mobile says data may be deprioritized during congestion, with further reduction after 50 GB of monthly use. Video streams in SD, and tethering is limited to 3G speeds. Consider those limits alongside the recurring bill before choosing the plan.
The October 12, 2026 fee increase
T-Mobile’s fee page says its monthly Regulatory Programs and Telco Recovery charge increases on October 12, 2026. The charge is assessed per line, so the impact depends on how many voice or mobile internet lines are on the account. T-Mobile’s fee information

| Line type | Current monthly charge | From October 12, 2026 | Monthly increase per line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voice line | $4.49 ($0.50 Regulatory Programs + $3.99 Telco Recovery) | $5.49 | $1.00 |
| Mobile internet line | $2.10 ($0.12 Regulatory Programs + $1.98 Telco Recovery) | $2.60 | $0.50 |
T-Mobile says these are company-retained charges to recover costs, not government taxes or government-imposed fees. They are separate from government-required taxes and fees, which can vary by location. The promoted Essentials price lists these carrier fees as additional charges. T-Mobile’s fee information
Why the free line does not cancel out the increase
The third-line promotion discounts the plan charge through credits; the fee increase applies separately to each line. A free plan line is therefore not necessarily free of recurring carrier fees or taxes. For a voice line, the scheduled change adds $1 per month to the per-line fee. The offer terms do not say that promotional credits cover or freeze this charge.

To compare the offer with your current service, look at the full recurring bill—not just the advertised $30-per-line plan price. Include all three lines, carrier fees, taxes, any device payments and any discounts or credits that would be lost by changing accounts or plans.
The separate legacy-plan price adjustments
The October 12 fee change is not the same as T-Mobile’s reported migration of some customers from older plans. Ars Technica reported that some legacy-plan migration customers were notified of monthly adjustments of up to $6 per line. COO Jon Freier said, “Nearly half of these customers won’t see their price change at all by the time this migration is complete.” He also said, “For those who do, It’s up to $6 per line.” Those reported adjustments concern affected migration customers; they are not the published October 12 fee schedule. There has also been a reported issue involving existing free-line promotions after migration. Android Authority reported on July 16, 2026 that some customers did not initially see promotional discounts reflected. T-Mobile told the outlet that it had identified technical issues affecting a very small number of customers and that, for some, free-line promotions were delayed in appearing after migration. That report does not establish that all migrated customers lost credits, or that the current new-account offer has the same issue. Android Authority’s report on delayed promotional discounts
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether the offer is worth it
- Verify eligibility first. Ask T-Mobile whether your proposed new account, credit qualification and chosen plan meet the live promotion’s terms.
- Price the full bill. Add recurring carrier fees and location-dependent taxes to the plan price, and account for the October 12 voice-line fee change if your service will be active then.
- Check what you would give up. Changing accounts or plans may affect existing discounts, device credits or plan benefits. Do not assume they will transfer; have T-Mobile confirm the consequences for your account.
- Test the plan against your usage. Decide whether Essentials’ congestion treatment, SD video and 3G-speed tethering fit how you use mobile data and hotspot service.
- Keep the qualifying setup. The published promotion says credits stop if you cancel any voice line or change plans. Read the live terms before making later account changes.
The offer may lower the plan portion of a qualifying new customer’s bill, but the total savings depend on eligibility, taxes and fees, plan fit and how long the account remains within the promotion’s conditions.
